@@insert_username_here I agree. Except that scene in Black Mesa when the voice changes... why? Why does it glitch like that while they are giving an important announcement? Why does the voice fully change?!
@@help4343 A women's voice sounds a lot more calmer and to be honest more like a suggestion, while the military's one sounds like command and threat, which to be fair it is, also i imagine there is a pitch button in the control room and 2 soldiers thought it sound badass lol
Something I've noticed is that some lines got cut from Black Mesa, but Black Mesa also includes a few lines that are cut from the original game. Black Mesa includes lines meant for the track control segment (just before on a rail), but while those lines are coded in OG Half-Life, they never made it into the actual game. Meanwhile, OG Half-Life contains lines in the Lambda Core, almost as it's gone back to automated error reporting. But those didn't make it in Black Mesa. Just an odd quirk I noticed between games.
The original VOX was good, but I really like the Black Mesa one as well actually. I'd argue it feels colder than the one in the original Half Life just because it sounds so much more human yet still has no emotion to it. The original one just feels like text to speech, which I get is the point. Both are good in their own rights, dunno why people hate the new one so much especially since there's patches to replace it with the original VOX.
The old voice was completely detached from humanity. It added to the feeling that some dark stuff may dwell deep in the facility. It felt, of earth, but alien at the same time. Added to the mystery and wonder of the atmosphere, and perhaps the danger. The moment when the original computer voice takes the time to inform the facility that it's been taken over by military command is just one more detail that seems to add stress to the situation. The new voice sounds like a hospital page. A well done hospital page, but in my small opinion, not as emotionally memorable as the original.
Both of them work for me. Although the original is better for modding/porting. If you know what to do and how to apply it, you can reverse-engineer the HL VOX and make it function in Doom.
Wished they didn't mess with the VOX in black mesa. The wierd ambience of an uncaring, automated voice with no verbal inflections, was a constant reminder of your de-humanization as a survivor of catastrophe.
It's a recreation/remake, not a HD port. Everything other than the original layout and story is completely new, hell, even the levels are different sometimes. And I think the new VOX is pretty cool, and it's not like you can't change it back with an addon.
Both of these are interesting in how they work. The original has that almost artificially-sounding deep voice, with all the words that comprise the game's sentences broken up into each word, so some of them kind of randomly have a different tone and it doesn't sound as cohesive. The new one sounds more like a real person, and some of the commonly used phrases comprising several words at a time are used instead of always building with one word at a time. In the original HL they may have kind of had to do it that way because of data constraints, and it's also kind of how they made computer sounding voices before so it's sort of retro-futuristic. But they also had over 50% of unused sentence lines, so maybe they could have recorded them all. But I guess then we might not ever have known those existed in the text file.
Why do people hate the new VOX so much? I believe its the better one because it has a natural tone to it, it sounds human, but its just slow, cold and monotone, which just adds to the intimidation factor of the new VOX. Its similar to the Overwatch voice from HL2, it sounds human, but its just too cold and monotone. The old VOX is just kinda, odd sounding, it feels like the military is text to speech, which I guess is the point, but because of that it loses any intimidation. I just cant take the old VOX seriously.
I believe it's because of the nostalgia...(?) Well, I'm not too sure... But to be honest, I like the original version more. For me it sounds more menacing. The voice feels kinda unnatural, deep, etc. I feel like it's intended to feel unnatural. Like some sort of a bot or something... Yes, it's true that the Black Mesa one sounds more natural and possibly realistic. Note: This is just my opinion. People had their own opinions on things and it's understandable.
