For anybody who's curious that first audio clip at 3:27 is from the 1966 film "The Battle of Algiers". He's speaking the Algerian dialect of Arabic and saying "this one doesn't win, this one doesn't win, this one doesn't win, this one wins, ok, this one doesn't win, this one doesn't win". It's from a scene in the opening where a guy is running a game of cards on the street then gets put away by the cops. Then, the kid says "men have two faces. One is smiling, one is crying." The man responds "they sent you?" "Yes, they sent me. Here, take this".
this song is the definition of rap and beatmaking itself. no one tops MadLib for his beats, no one tops Mos Def and Slick Rick for their writing and rapping.

One of the most recognizable and at the same time most hard slapping rap beats I have ever come across. The bass coming in at the beginning is just an excellent addition to the beat, let alone whatever comes after it.
I don’t know how I have missed this gorgeous as artpiece, the way they just flow with so much ease and relaxed, it doesn’t even matter what they are rapping about but it still sounds so gooood with their wordplay. Wow
Every single day since I discovered this song, I’ve been coming here to listen and admire this hip hop masterpiece. dayum what a song. Mos def Absolut rap masterclass and slick Rick genius storyteller. This shit right here is what gets me going everyday
This song, this album, resonates even more in the present time with everything going on in the Middle East with Israel and Palestine. That's why Mos's music is timeless
This is a top 50 collaboration in rap history, if not higher. Two of the greatest emcees of all time both drop S-tier verses and Madlib went smooth, refined ape shit on that beat. If I had a hard drive with every rap song ever recorded but just one blank CD to try to make someone fall in love with Hip Hop, this song undoubtedly makes the cut.
Man this track takes me way back to the good old days when artist created timeless beats & poetry whispered into their ears by the almighty. This is rap. When people ask you what’s rap you play this track.
It's simply rap, and it's MOS DEF, I love the addition of ALI LA POINTE's voice, from the Algerian film *la batille d' Alger, it's a cult scene where he plays Bonneteau in the market 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
Bruh me too!!! I just happened to find it looking for Common and Pete Rock's "Auditorium Volume 1" and this popped up right before it....I got so excited!!!!!!!!!!
My love for this tune brought me to the cinematic anti-colonialist masterpiece The Battle of Algiers (1966), where the dialogue samples in here are lifted from. Thanks for the movie rec Yasiin ❤
« Mos Def Auditorium feat slick slick » … BUT, use the supposed « Episode » one, as in, surely registered as « podcats ». I swear its there. Enjoy, and yes, you re welcome 🫡😮
This song brings back so many memories. High school days, in my 2002 525i with a Swisher and a gram rolling up in “the view” of my city with my homies while it was raining outside. Driving around with the last of the blunt. Going to Mcds to grub before going home… fckn miss those days no stress
Reflecting on “Mos Def - Auditorium (featuring Slick Rick)” and the Resonance of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Ah, the timeless rhythm of Mos Def’s “Auditorium” reverberates through my memories, transporting me back to that April day, one year ago. As I listen, I find myself immersed in a blend of nostalgia and admiration, much like the way I feel when reflecting on the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. 1. The Melodic Flow: The opening notes of “Auditorium” cascade like a gentle stream, weaving intricate patterns of sound. Slick Rick’s lyrical prowess dances atop the beat, creating a vivid auditory tapestry. It’s a symphony of words, much like Kareem’s elegant movements on the basketball court-a fluidity that defied his towering stature. 2. The Skyhook: A Sublime Artistry: As the song unfolds, I’m reminded of Kareem’s signature move-the Skyhook. A shot so graceful, it transcended mere basketball mechanics. When he raised that long arm, the ball seemed to kiss the heavens before descending inexorably into the net. It wasn’t a thunderous dunk or a flashy crossover; it was quiet, precise, and devastatingly effective-much like the understated brilliance of “Auditorium.” 3. Dominance Beyond Decibels: Kareem’s Skyhook wasn’t about showmanship; it was about mastery. Just as the beat in “Auditorium” doesn’t scream for attention, Kareem’s dominance didn’t rely on noise. He didn’t need to shatter backboards or posterize opponents. His legacy was etched in the subtle swish of the net, the quiet inevitability of points accumulating. Like the song, he didn’t demand applause; he earned respect. 4. The Unstoppable Force: How do you defend against a Skyhook? You don’t. It’s an unsolvable equation-an elegant geometry that left defenders grasping at air. Kareem’s 7’2" frame became an immovable fortress, and that shot was his impenetrable gate. Just as the beat in “Auditorium” loops seamlessly, Kareem’s consistency looped through seasons, championships, and records. 5. Defensive Symphony: But greatness isn’t one-sided. Kareem wasn’t just an offensive maestro; he orchestrated defensive symphonies too. His shot-blocking prowess-like the unexpected twists in the song-disrupted opponents’ plans. Eleven All-Defensive teams bear witness to his commitment to both ends of the court. He wasn’t content with half-measures; he played the entire symphony. 6. The GOAT Debate: And so, as I listen to “Auditorium,” I ponder the GOAT debate. Kareem’s name surfaces, not in the thunderous roars of Shaq or the flashy crossovers of others, but in the quiet reverence of those who truly understand the game. Six championships, two Finals MVPs, and two scoring titles-yes, those are the accolades. But it’s the Skyhook, the unwavering consistency, and the complete package that elevate him. Conclusion: In the echoes of “Auditorium,” I find Kareem’s legacy-a blend of artistry, dominance, and humility. He didn’t need to shout; his game spoke volumes. And just as the beat lingers, so does his impact on basketball history. So, here’s to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-the GOAT whose Skyhook remains etched in our collective memory, much like the haunting melody of “Auditorium.” 🏀🎶🌟
It makes me feel so good whenever I listen to it, and even if I listen to it until the morning, I never get bored. It's such a beautiful song. I feel sorry for the generation that doesn't know it.
anyone wondering, the bit at the end is from the movie "battle of Algiers" an Italian film made right after the Algerian revolution. The first voice is Ali le Puente, a hustler turned revolutionary who was murdered in his house (bombing) by French occupiers. His home in La Kasbah of Algiers is a monument to him to this day.
If you love this song, check out the original 1975 Bollywood song from where this sick beat is sampled. It’s called “Do jhoot jiye ek sach ke liye” by the Legendary Lata Mangeshkar. It’s actually surprising since Bollywood is the one generally copying songs, for once it’s the other way round 😅
Google bollywood samples in hip hop. There's absolutely tons. There's also a big difference between sampling and copying. Although there is something to be said about paying homage to the originals, whether indian or not.

[Slick Rick:]
Sit and come relax, riddle of the mack
It's the patch, I'm a soldier in the middle of Iraq
Well, say, about noon-ish, comin' out the whip
And lookin at me curious, a young Iraqi kid
Carryin' laundry, "What's wrong, G? Hungry?"
"No, gimme my oil or get fuck out my country"
And in Arabian barkin' other stuff ("Jihad!")
'Til his moms come grab him and they walk off in a rush
Distrust, feelin' like I've pissed upon wound
I'm like, "Surely hope that we can fix our differences soon!" (Bye!)
Buyin' apples, I'm breakin' on, "You take everythin'
Why not just take the damn food, black bastard?"
I don't understand it, on another planet?
15-months of this stuff, how I'm gonna manage?
And increasin' the sentiment
Gentlemen gettin' down on their Middle Eastern instruments
Realized trapped in this crap
Walk over, kicked one of my fabulous raps ("La-Di-Da-Di")
Arab jaw drop, they well wish, they glad rap
Now the kid considered like an Elvis of Baghdad

One of the most recognizable and at the same time most hard slapping rap beats I have ever come across.
The bass coming in at the beginning is just an excellent addition to the beat, let alone whatever comes after it.
I don’t know how I have missed this gorgeous as artpiece, the way they just flow with so much ease and relaxed, it doesn’t even matter what they are rapping about but it still sounds so gooood with their wordplay. Wow
Same thought i had when i first heard it two pioneers

When u know the history behind this song, makes you appreciate who write this. The guy is genius and an avid humanitarian(avid is an understatement)
Fun fact -the tune which is used is from indian song - Do jhoot jiye ek sach k liye.(1975)
Every single day since I discovered this song, I’ve been coming here to listen and admire this hip hop masterpiece. dayum what a song. Mos def Absolut rap masterclass and slick Rick genius storyteller. This shit right here is what gets me going everyday
Glad this son got some more spotlight, remember finding it about 6 year ago straight banger
Yeah seem like reels and TikToks brought it back
This song, this album, resonates even more in the present time with everything going on in the Middle East with Israel and Palestine. That's why Mos's music is timeless

The instrumental is from India.
One of the best rap instrumentals i've ever listened in my life

Because the instrumental is taken from an old Bollywood song. 50 years old song.

Reflecting on “Mos Def - Auditorium (featuring Slick Rick)” and the Resonance of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Ah, the timeless rhythm of Mos Def’s “Auditorium” reverberates through my memories, transporting me back to that April day, one year ago.
It wasn’t a thunderous dunk or a flashy crossover; it was quiet, precise, and devastatingly effective-much like the understated brilliance of “Auditorium.”
Hakeem is the GOAT

anyone wondering, the bit at the end is from the movie "battle of Algiers" an Italian film made right after the Algerian revolution. The first voice is Ali le Puente, a hustler turned revolutionary who was murdered in his house (bombing) by French occupiers. His home in La Kasbah of Algiers is a monument to him to this day.

THIS IS STREET CLASSIC.
@@tanishpradhan This beat specifically was made by Madlib and he has a whole instrumental album of Bollywood influenced beats called "Beat Konducta In India".
