Which Pokémon Region has the Best Early Game Makeup?

  • Each Pokémon region has its own unique attributes, but I think can all agree if they don't grab you in the early game it'll hard to enjoy anything past that, especially if there are almost no Pokémon to use. So let's rank all the early routes on how well they handle their composition of Pokémon; and there might be more then you think!

I particularly appreciate when early routes have a really unique rare spawn, like the Riolu in BW2 or Bagon in SM. Something to reward players dedicated enough to find them and change up the usual party members. In Sinnoh, it’s usually some combination of Starter, Starly, Shinx, Machop, and Budew

I really love how the Alola games have grass in some of the cities because it’s the closest we’ve had to Pokémon truly being everywhere like the anime. And logically, feral Pokémon would be in the cities and parks so it makes sense. Alola was the best region for early route Pokémon in my opinion. You can literally get Pikachu, Bagon, Zorua, Munchlax, Smoochum, and the Kanto and Johto starters before you even start the first trial. Most of these Pokémon are usually found/gifted in the mid to late game or even post game in other titles.

Actually maybe the wild area should be excluded too. in paldea’s case, you can choose the first gym you take on and its so open ended where you can go so that’s just unfair for the other regions, yeah everything before you can access before entering mesagoza excluding glitches.

I think the way you discussed the redundancy in the beginning of gen 6 is off the mark. (But I like the video!)
I think the reason there are so many of the same kinds of Pokemon is intentional. They are suggesting in a way, for you to catch a Bug and a Normal type to fill out your team early, however they are giving you a choice of several of that type, all of whom have different evolutionary paths and final design styles. Although Vivillon/Butterfree are pretty much identical, you might say its a choice for older players to be able to not use the regional bug, or you could say it's a chance for new players to see an old regional bug. Either way I actually think redundancy in an early route leads to better design than an abundance of types. It gives more control over the players experience at each milestone/roadblock which can lead to great things.

I will say this in defense of Unova's horrid early game options: it's intentional. See, the early route spawns are built around the player having an equal amount of challenge at the Striaton gym. None of the Pokemon you gain access to before the first gym have an advantage against any of the triplet Gym Leaders, meaning you'll learn about type matchups one way or another. Plus, of we got those usual early game bugs or birds, then Cilan's Pansage would never stand a chance and the whole purpose of the Striaton gym would go up in smoke. Gen V's design seemed to be built around making the gyms more challenging, for the most part, and building each area around the gym that they preface. Sure it doesn't give with the rest of the franchise, but it's unique and I appreciate it.

Not a very fair list. Your decision on where to draw the line between "major" and "minor" city is too arbitrary, and you regularly change what you consider "major" to bias for your favorites. If Oldale isn't a major city, then there's no way Cherrygrove is. So you're casting a wide net for Hoenn and shunting Johto. Stop the Johto hate, already.
Your range should have been "all routes or areas directly between the starter town and first gym and routes directly connected to them which are accessible before beating the first gym" and your criteria should have been variety of Pokemon (weighted for useful/powerful Pokemon) and how well those options prepare you for the upcoming gym (weighted for how many additional gyms it prepares you for). In this way, you have an area that the typical player will typically travel with the expectation they'll do some but not extensive exploration before challenging the first gym, and criteria that represent how well the options for Pokemon the typical player encounters sets them up for success across the game.

I had a cool thought for a video that's right up your alley. Top 10 Pokemon that should be in every region. And the 10 that should not (discluding legendary, regional forms, and mythical and convergent pokemon)

@@emperorcubone cool, I always liked gen 5 doing the reset in the first games. And honestly I'm surprised that with Kalos, galar and paldea being right next to one another, theoretically, that their national Dex's weren't similar. And unova and Alola should be almost completely independent as well....

Like I said it's to the first major town. What you consider "major" might not be the same as me, but a Route 1 list would be boring, and if it was to the first gym Galar would blow them all out of the water with the Wild Area...

GEN MF 4. SHINX AND STARLY FIRST 2 ROUTES THEN YOU GET BUIZEL AT THE WINDWORKS. W. bw2 is also very good if you count the ranch and especially the 2nd gym city with magnemite and stuff

In SV, can't you also get Diglett and Houndour, or do we bot have balls at that time?
You also forgot to mention the Bagon in USUM, but seeing as you mentioned it's SoS partner, I'll give it a pass.

Black and White 1 earlygame is even worse than you made it look here, all the grass in the Dreamyard is behind a cut tree, so you can't even get Munna until after the first gym

Don’t dog on Azuril. If you get huge power and evole it into maril you will curb stomp Cheren and will have a pretty solid water type Azumaril shortly after which will at least carry you through the early game

I think this is a different and opposite flaw to having too few/weak Pokemon in the early game. Giving out a Huge Power Pokemon that especially in Gen 6 onwards also has one of the best typings in the series before the first gym is just silly and makes it not really worth ever considering the tradeoff of taking a different party member without EV investment later on.
