I've owned a TB-303, but didn't have it for long and have long since forgotten how to program it. I now have two TD-3's and this is by far the best visual tutorial I've seen of how to program a TB-303/TD-3 I've seen on RUclips.

The funny thing about the 303 is that the first time you get your hands on it you will absolutely hate programming it.
But once you did it a few times you'll notice it's actually not complicated at all - it kinda makes sense.
You just have to get used to it and seperate the notes and the rythm in your head and it will quickly start to make sense.
It's a pretty easy to use machine which can lead to insanely good results really quick!

It's already been said but I'll say it again, excellent job making this super simple! Whenever I've heard people talk about the "old school" way of creating a pattern, it sounded incredibly painful. This actually seems easier than the TB-03 style even if it issn't. Saving this to my folder of RUclips music production related videos for sure! I appreciate it!

Btw, you can also sync with a drum machine using a 3,5mm jack cable, through the ”sync in” jack (provided, your drum machine has this option for clock-out)
When selecting sync mode, you also need to set the clock rate at the same rate as your drum machine.

thank you for the inciteful and clear tutorial. I had now question which I'm hoping you or somebody reading the comments can. I use a cirklon to sequence a bunch of my hardware gear including the td-3 - I pre make my patterns on the td3 but is there a way I can trigger those patterns (including all its slides/accents and different time signatures) on the td3 from the cirklon. I'm only able to pregame in any riffs on the cirklon direct if it is in Midi mode. it won't play the pre programmed notes I've put in. The original Roland 303 was able to override this and play any patterns made before hand. Providing there were no pattern notes inputted in the cirklon sequencer. I was hoping the same would apply buy having no joy here.. hoping someone can assist..??

    • @303Guy
      @303Guy  Год назад

Based on the information in the provided texts, it is not clear whether the TD-3 can be triggered to play pre-programmed patterns from an external sequencer like the Cirklon. However, it is mentioned in that patterns can be selected and played in order by pressing and holding a PATTERN switch and then pressing another one at the same time. It is also mentioned that tracks can be created by adding together multiple patterns.
There are some parameters midi can change
      Note Off
      Note On
      All Notes Off
      Pitch Bend
      Timing Clock
      Start
      Continue
      Stop
It may be worth exploring the TD-3's MIDI implementation to see if there are any additional features or settings that could allow for triggering pre-programmed patterns from an external sequencer.

Hi Mark, this is terrific. Thanks for the video. Apologies if this is all obvious or irrelevant, but can the length of each note and the spacing between each note be defined? So let's take a 6 note bassline with notes 1 and 4 lasting longer than the others and say a long gap between notes 2 and 3. Is that something the TD-3 can do?

Well it's not completely necessary you can combine multiple functions. I just wanted to break it down for people to easier understand it with overloading them.

Can you change one note in the pattern after you made the pattern? Or do you have to clear it always and start from scratch again?

Thanks for this- you’re clearly au fait with the front panel. What’s your opinion of the sequencer in the Synth Tool app? Easier, or just different? Btw, I’m currently in the ‘not sure I should have gone for this’ stage of td3 ownership as I already have two Craves and they’re just flat out bassier imho, but I’:m sure I’ll find a use for it!

@@maringpdx you can. Any note above the velocity threshold you've defined in the SynthTool will accent. Any note overlapping with the next will slide. They updated the firmware and now it slides properly.

You have that hooked through MIDI straight to your drum machine or do you have a controller? If there is no controller, are you using the MIDI out of TD-3 to MIDI in of the drum machine or is it the other way around?
