    Thanks for this. It showed me that instead of pulling my hair out try to input the exact arpeggio I have in my head it is more rewarding to just input the notes from the key you are working in and just play with ties, rests and slides until a happy accident happens. And also it shows you can get really nice patterns with just 4 steps.

    • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  3 года назад

    Great work, thanks. (I'm now a subscriber.) But funny thing ... I programmed this sequence into an Aruturia MiniBrute 2S, which has pitch and octaves, ties, rests and even a way to do accents with the filter pressure. But for some reason my sequence isn't sounding right. Could it be the tie on the Minibrute 2s differs from the TD-3 ties? Thanks.

    • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  4 года назад +1

      Before I had a td-3 I tried to use this set of notes to sequence my neutron and it just didn't sound right. Now I know yes the rests and ties are moving notes in an odd way ( In my other advanced td-3 tutorial I go over this but probably difficult to use this information on your 2s). I do have the notes I used in my ( neutron 303 ) tutorial still in the digitakt somewhere but have a migraine today. Let me know if you get stuck though and I will get those notes off the digitakt. Thanks for the sub. Wish I had some minibrute content for you! Looks like a fun synth

    • @ThinkerThunker
      @ThinkerThunker 4 года назад

      @@avrilcadabra Thank you so much for the reply, it helps knowing you've had the same problem. I'm thinking the difference between tb-303s and other sequencers is that the tb-303 has both a "tie" and a "slide." Whereas, the minibrute 2s just has a "tie." So that's surely going to have an effect on the sound. I'll go check out your other tut. And sorry about your migraine. Take care.

    Having never been able to get my hands on the original, i always used emulations. Actually using that messed up sequencer (which in hindsight makes a lot of sense when you think of the technology they had at the time) is interesting! There's a chaotic element to it that's real fun. Even when I try to write something very specific, i still mess something up half the time and it's fun as hell! I guess if it was my only sequencer and it didn't have midi in, I'd be less forgiving, but it's a good change of pace every now and again

    • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  3 года назад +1

      Agreed. It is very difficult to write a complicated intended pattern when ties and rests are added in. Finding an accidental gem in the chaos is far more appealing and I have no doubt how all the famous patterns were made. I am planning to make a video about using it as a standalone sequencer via cv. Midi and usb. Should be intriguing to see if the magic of its sequencer can translate to other instruments

    • @els1f
      @els1f 3 года назад

      @@avrilcadabra absolutely do that! Is the slide transfered to the pitch cv? I haven't tried it yet🤔 There really is something accidentally magic about the 303. • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  3 года назад +1

      Hi Alice, I would use the drum machine as the master, and send clock and transport to the TD-3, if you then have the TD-3 clock source set to MIDI, the td-3 will start when you press play on the drum machine.

    • @TheDjAliceD
      @TheDjAliceD 3 года назад

      @@avrilcadabra thats exactly what i do. the TR8S is my Master via MIDI connected to the TD-3, but when i stop the TD-3 and start it again it is out of sync until i stop the TR8S and restart it. but in your Video it works well, so i dont know where i did the misstake

    • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  3 года назад

      @@TheDjAliceD in this video. I was using the digitakt and I am pretty sure I have send transport disabled here. As I am pressing play on the td-3 and then just pressing play on the digitakt in time with the pattern.
      Depends what you need to do in the song you are making. Having mutes on a mixer would work. Sometimes I have the volume down on the td-3 and fade it in if its sync'd with transport.
      I imagine you could switch to a blank pattern then switch back when you wanted to come back in also if it was transport sync'd. Other wise don't send the transport just clock and just have to hit play on on the td-3 in time. Let me know if this isn't working. I don't have a tr8s so unsure of its midi settings. But maybe this topic is worthy of exploring in a video

      I don't have a 303 but I have read the original Roland manual and it is the same as far as I am concerned. It only get's tricky when you get into the more advanced interaction betweens tie's and rests etc. I have a video on that and that seems to be same as the 303 manual also. I do believe how I have shown it is a lot easier to understand than how Roland does with the original 303 manual though

I also know the p.o have a few modes for syncing in different ways. So as long as the pocket operator is set to the right sync mode that video should explain the rest.

You’ll have to check the guide on the po for which mode it is but one of them sends the audio on I think tip and sync signal on ring. The audio side will go into your mixer and the sync side will go into the td-3. Then the td3 audio out will also go into the mixer.

    Amazing tutorial, followed it and managed to get to the expected results ! Any chance that you would gives some tips about how to pair the td3 with a digitakt? • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  3 года назад

      Thanks that is great. I never really made digitakt tutorial videos as there is so many out there. The td3 does not let you change the midi in channel number with out synth tool.
      Need to set the sync on td3 to midi. Midi cable out of digitakt into td3. On digitakt go to track 9. Set channel to match td3 ( think you have to hold func and press the encoder ) after that its just same as any other digitakt track

      @@avrilcadabra yes I understand 😊 thanks for the setting details, I will apply them right away 👍 I have a side question regarding your setup here, do you use a DAW or do you do everything on the digitakt? • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  3 года назад +1

      I sequenced everything for a year with the digitakt. I will make my next video about digitakt and td3 midi. I recently got an akai force and have everything working via usb instead of midi cables. So will have to revert it back a bit to make video. I have done a video few months back about how the digitakt controls everything in the tiny studio. For audio go into a mixer and record the audio from that. Or a zoom h6 can do 6 channels. Or you could use overbridge into a daw

    • @avrilcadabra

      I don't think I would recommend it for anyone, it is good for making authentic sounding 303 patches, and you can definitely sequence other gear with it, but it has limited range and starts to get complicated with how the rests and ties interact with the sequence. If you already have one though sure make some sequences it , worse that can happen is you make a weird pattern and I am pretty sure that is how most famous pattern were made on it.

      Depends on budget. I think the sonicware XFM thats coming out soon will be very good value. 4 x 128 step tracks. 6 polyphony per step ( I'll have to test that) you could sequence 4 synths with or itself. As well it being a quite powerful synth for 199 usd + shipping.

      I used to sequence hardware with daws 20 years ago but that was via audio interface and midi din cables. What I use now is pure hardware setup, I do throw the outputted finished stereo tracks in ableton lately to master them with ozone plugins. But only time I have connected my setup to ableton was using the digitakt overbridge which let me integrate a single plugin into the hardware setup.
      So sadly not experienced at all with USB hybrid setups

    • @avrilcadabra
      @avrilcadabra  4 года назад

      its confusing for sure, the buttons have multiple names and I've seen people call them a lot of things I think on that site says off and rest. . I would say (ON, NOTE, STEP) all mean the note will play ( Tie, Held ) means extend the note to take up the space of 2 notes. (OFF, REST) means no sound. In that spot. then UP an Down refer the the octave.
      I Made a more recent video explaining exactly how these functions interact and what they are actually doing. For example a Rest inserts a space between the notes, it does not turn a note OFF
