Wow. I swear man, I was talking to a buddy about this concept when he introduced me to knapping 15 years ago! The first stuff I knapped was some milk glass from an old counter top. I still have a bunch of it, and it knaps just like obsidian. I figured there had to be some man made stuff out there that knapped more like chert, but everything candidate I've seen never quite satisfied. I always thought "man, it would be great if someone could make stone tiles just a bit more glossy and slick!" Maybe my thoughts went into the ether and made it to the good folks at Hunt Primitive! Lol, fun to consider. Regardless, I'm super stoked for this product! You guys might just revolutionize knapping!
This is... awesome. As a rockhound and occasional knapper for decades, I think this is a great idea and I hope its well recieved and that it's here to stay. We need this. I've been concerned about the loss of irreplaceable ancient knappable rock sources. I see the truckloads of knappable rocks getting turned into debitage and think about how quickly some of my favorite deposits would get emptied out if the wrong person found out about them. One of the things that has always bugged me about wanting to dive in and really improve my skills is the huge amount of rock that a person has to break in order to learn. I hope you can navigate the complexities of bringing a new product to market and succeed. This is a really cool idea, and it looks like you executed it well. As an aside- just so you know, cubic zirconia is not a diamond. Its not chemically a diamond, its not related to diamond. It has a similar refractive index, and its been marketed as a less expensive diamond substitute. but thats where the similarity ends. There are actual, industrially made artificial diamonds that are used for jewelry, and I think you might be confusing cubic zirconia with artificial diamonds. I just wanted to point that out because you used it an example, and if its worth mentioning in your video, its worth knowing the specifics. Thanks, and good luck!
This is simply amazing. I've been fascinated with napping my entire life (38). A few years ago I bought a starter kit, and a bunch of high quality rock. I destroyed it all as expected. And with the price of rock I just had to stop the hobby. I couldn't justify spending a few hundred dollars dollars to make a bunch of powder gravel. Maybe I can finally start my passion again.
I've been fascinated by the stone age since i was a kid, but here in Brazil it is kind of rare to find good knapping stones, at least in my region. I'm looking to buy some online but it's more expensive than i thought lol
I say youre a hero for this. Flint and similar rocks are finite. Theyre important for the environment and we dont need to drain natural resources for whats now a hobby
This is sweet! The color possibilities alone are exciting! I love a matte black/dark black chert and being able to have that on demand is INSANE. I have such high hopes for this and I encourage you to have fun with it! Make some cool stuff! Great video! :D
This is a great idea man made knapping materials are fairly limited for usable materials a lot of the common ones are brittle, porous, or hard to find in the right dimensions without a tile saw this might get me back into trying out flint knapping.
That looks great I could see a scout troop or shop class doing a project with that. Its a point of entry tool. In my state you can only take 25lbs of rock per year and not for commercial sale.
Excellent, well done, just what is needed. Especially in areas that are flint and cheat poor. Overseas delivery will, as always, be expensive, I guess. Cheers
@@kyledexheimer6548 I suspect that it is, indeed, porcelain of some kind, but johnstone doesn't have a slick surface when broken. Perhaps it is also heat treated in the process. Does not matter to me how it is made, just that it works well.
Looks really good and fun to knao. I don't usuallt like buying material but I might get me a piece. When first started i mostly avoided good stone since I was afrraid of wasting it knowing it is limited so learning of synthetic high quality stone is nice. One concern I have is: is it easy to identify the material as synthetic to a new knapper? The thought of people buying colored stuff and reselling it as high quality natural stone came to mind.

Cool stuff! This is a great idea and probably going to get me to give knapping another try. Adjacent question: will this send a spark on a hardened steel striker?
@huntprimitive9918 would this be similar to a fritware? I'm formulating a very knappable ceramic, my starting point is 70% frit 3124, 10% silica, 18% kaolin, 2% bentonite
@@huntprimitive9918 there’s different grades of porcelain super fine grade porcelain like some insulators are very slick like dacite and so texture is variable
#HuntPrimitive I like to shoot blowpipe and when i look you knapping, i see small chips and i though. Can you make small blowdart head from small stone chip?? Or is there something that make it useless?
Are there any dangers of breathing the dust from this material? That should be something to take into consideration to minimize any danger to the knapper. Just something that crossed my mind.
glad to see that. So much good lithic material gets wasted by beginners. There I said it. Most of them want to get right into the good stuff, instead of practicing on glass or porcelain....the earth no longer makes this stuff.
Leave it to science to take us back to the Stone Age. I've been wondering when something like this would be developed. Colored stuff coming out, too. I can see how so many noobs coming into the hobby can be frustrating to the old pros. Kind of like flyfishing, eh? Only so many natural resources.

The first actual innovation in flintknapping since the Clovis
Man I thought of a product like this before, never thought it would become a reality, thank you for creating this
This is such a cool product. Ill put in an order eventually, I haven't been knapping as much
im subbed to you
you'll have to commission bigger pieces to make some solutrean laurel leaf points😂
love your videos man just got into them this month and they made me wanna try out knapping which led me here
Worthy of a conservation award and our business. Looking forward to seeing some of this in person.

I have dreamed of this for years. I often asked myself, "If we can make artificial diamonds, surely we can make artificial chert."
Johnstone. This is the same material toilets are made out of.

Really looking forward to working this material. Ordered!!
Is the material strong enough to be made into a gunflint for flintlock muzzleloaders? The only rock where I live that's knappable is obsidian
I took a curious about this.

Adjacent question: will this send a spark on a hardened steel striker?
I was curious if you were going to make a video for these.
I will be ordering this for sure.
Can the flakes and debris be saved and recycled? Like if we were to send a box of debitage back you you, could you reuse it to make more?
As of right now no, but that thought has definitely crossed my workbench.
Looks like it would be sweet to knapp😎🤙thanks for being such a innovator when it comes to knapping
A product whose time has come for many folks. Hope you sell the world level with this! How is it with ABO tools?
thank you very much. It works really good with abo tools.
Very clever Ryan!
This is a great idea. Is it possible to make it in different colors to emulate chert? For example, grey or tan
Will you ever create large “stone” that we could spall out?
Awesome! Dont have to rui a ton of stone to learn. Like it.
Great video, thanks 👍
Great job 👍
Yup i definitely want some of that for my kids
Great idea! Sadly, knapping prices are getting to the point where synthetic rocks may take over the market in the coming decades.
Looks awesome!!
Super interesting to me!
Can you customize These ? Like an extra big rock or extra hard for more durability or some cool colours ?
The fields above the white cliffs of Dover England have tons of flint
not asking for specific chemistry but it looks like a porcelain is that a fair comparison?
Texture wise, he's said it was similar to dacite, which is smooth and waxy
It's related but has different composition than porcelain. much smoother and waxier than porcelain

Is the base porcelain with a high silica content? Sort of a modified modern Egyptian paste?

for sure, I discuss that in this videos. Always knap outside or in a ventilated area.
Is this Dekton?
interesting, clearly some kind of cast substance, maybe like some kind of siliceous plaster formula.
Very cool!!

Can this be slabbed to knapp into a point?
I'm sure it could be, but we are actually working on point preforms so slabbing wont be necessary....hopefully
