  • There was a varmint making a barking noise from 2am-4am. That cost me some sleep. I ended up sleeping until 7am!
Going up over Castle Pass wasn't any problem. The Peter Grubb hut was super cool. I was able to go inside in 2017.
There were some long water carries. It is hot. I didn't do bad miles, but not quite 20.

If you were doing the CDT or the Arizona Trail those scuzzy ponds would look absolutely inviting compared to sharing a tank with cattle or filtering water out of a road puddle. 😉 - The "moss" is Wolf lichen that is a bright chartreuse color. You will see a lot of it from now on. Native peoples used it to dye material used for their basket making. I've heard two hypotheses on the ring growth, which doesn't happen everywhere. One is that the lichen are following the pattern of earlier rings of branches, and the other is that they grow in the sap holes of sapsuckers such as the Red-breasted sapsucker. Sapsuckers often make their holes in rows up trees. They and other birds then feed off the sap. Sapsuckers often introduce fungal spores in their drill holes, so it's possible they may even be introducing the algae and fungal spores as they drill. - The white flowers are Mariposa Lilies, in this case Calochortus leichtlinii.

Total guess, but maybe the rings of moss correlate to snow melt. 🍻

Flower looks like a Sego Lilly. It has a bulb like tulips. Thank you for showing the flowers.

It's a different species of Mariposa Lily. Sego lilies (Calochortus nuttallii) don't grow in California.
