    I just started experimenting with using my Tamron Macro Lens with a Tamron 2X Teleconverter, and so far have been getting some very impressive results. What's nice about using a Macro Lens with a 2X teleconverter is you get increased magnification WITHOUT having to get closer to a subject. I'm going to try and use that combo photographing insects one of these days, and will keep you folks posted.
    I see that as potentially a great way to photograph insects because if you can photograph insects WITHOUT having to get ultra close to them, you have a better chance of getting your photograph, because if you can keep a good distance away from the insect you have less of a risk of scaring the creature off.

    Extension tubes are available with the electrical connections through to the lense are available for not to much money and the ones I have work well. Saves risking screwing up the body and lense.

    Well I never!! I use this very technique in my macro photography. I'm unsure about about the magnification ratio, but with just the adaptors (no extension tubes) my 28-80mm lens is extended by approximately 1 cm, and gives me 1:1 magnification.
    Using two set of tubes is completely mad! I've not managed to capture an insect yet, but using a tabletop studio, I acheived some very impressive results! I also use a reverse mount ring and a macro diopter, which screws to the front of the lens.
    I've done the 'tissue' shot, and I can see every single fibre! I have a virtual microscope! I can't wait for set #3 to arrive! Jeeezzz!!

    with the kit lens 18-55mm and a reversing ring you can get around 5:1 at 18mm. using a ultra wide lense like 10 or 11mm you will get around 7-8:1. you can go even further with using ultra wide lense + reversing ring + extension tubes. 10:1 should be no problem. maybe you can give it a try and make a video.

    Reversing the lens would do too (even better in some aspects if you ask me). Kenko's tubes do have contacts. I don't use ET much right now since i got the Vello Macrofier. With ETs, sometimes getting things in focus is pretty hard (and theoretically, the focusing point is sometimes behind the lens' front).

    Magnification is the ratio of focal distances therefore if you use a shorter focal length lens you will get more magnification out of the extension. That macro lens looks like a 100mm but if you put a standard or wide angle on it the magnification will be more.

    When I use extension tube, I would also attach a reverse wide angle lens for up to 5:1 to 9:1 magnification. Lens with focal length longer than 80mm might not be suitable for adding extension tube due to difficult in hand held shooting.

  • @mikedunn3226
    @mikedunn3226 7 лет назад

    Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm new to the photography game but as far as I'm aware extension tubes don't give you any X magnification, only draw the lens away from the camera to allow you to shorten the minimum focusing distance although it gives a similar effect.

    @damianhayes6754 7 лет назад

    The Canon MP-E 65mm goes up to 5x on a full frame body. Can be used with a 2x teleconverter to make it a 10x. Then if you use the lens and teleconverter on a cropped sensor body it has a magnification of 16x. Very dark viewfinder and almost no depth of field even stopped right down. Canon refer to the lens as a micro lens as opposed to a macro lens.

    Have you tried to use a laser pointer lense infront of a mobile camera?
    The magnification is way more than you have now, it's simple and cheap but sure not the same quality.
    I shot the laser wire thread while it's led was working like 20%
    The photo was incredibly astonishing.
    The focusing is way easier as your lens will be like a point, you won't need flash light. Only directed led points on your subject like 1 CM ONLY.

    another grate video i do love extention tubes i like the canon tubes because of the closing down issue makes it so hard to focus in the dark i dontknow how he manages to get anything in focus he is good but to get the best results when taking macro photos i try to keep my camera body level and strait pointing at the bank note to get max depth of field he should have lowered his tripod so that the lens was not pointing down and capturing the bank note at an angle.

    Is the 22.5 denominator always used to determine the amount of magnification? I had a customer asking me what the magnification was and I couldn't give an accurate response. Great trick getting the aperture to stay put, this is one benefit of using a manual lens for macro photography that most don't consider. thanks great video!

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng  9 лет назад +3

      Bob Jimenez The magnification is calculated using the ratio of the size of the actual item to the sizer of the image formed on the sensor. In this case, I shot a ruler and observed the length of the ruler needed to completely fill the frame, then calculated the ratio of that to the actual sensor length.

    • @bobjimenez4464
      @bobjimenez4464 9 лет назад

      ***** I tried taking a shot of a ruler with a Nikon D7000 and a 60mm 1:1 macro lens at close focus but not exactly the closest focus possible. The length of ruler in the picture was the published width of the camera sensor

    For anyone watching in 2020:
    The Laowa 25mm f/2.8 ultra macro lens can go up to 5X magnification on its own and is also considerably more wieldy than using extension tubes, bellows or lenses.
    When it comes to magnification you tend to see a point of diminishing returns (2X compared to 1X makes much more sense compared to 4X vs 2X), and thus the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2:1 lens is a good all-round lens for macro.

    this was super cool, I was wondering if stacking several tubes would work and RUclips read my thoughts and recommend this a few hours later!

    Will a 2x magnifying glass in front of the camera lens will produce the similar result?

    At 2:49 you say "I will lose autofocus..." Actually, that does not matter.
    When doing macro photography, move the whole camera or subject in order to focus.

      It's only when you are using extreme magnification macro lens
      And worse, since the EF lens aperture control is electronic, you can't adjust the aperture on camera when that extension ring is attached (there's a macro extension ring with a electronic contact, however...)

    Is there a point where adding extension tubes would create distortion making your image unviewable? In other words is there a threshold limit to how many extension tubes you could add?
