- Clouds of white smoke were seen billowing out from a London bus.
The 407 was stationed near Croydon in the south of the city as onlookers filmed smoke pout out from underneath it.
Fire crews later attended the scene.

Runaway Diesel, basically the engine is running on its own oil being sucked in through the air inlet. Only way to stop it is to starve the engine of air. Emergency stop buttons won't work as they're usually linked to the fuel supply.

Love the girl saying "its a fire" if the bus was made of wood it would be white smoke but don't imagine they are. it would be black if it was on fire.
Google "diesel runaway". Thats what is happening here. Its quite a rare phenomenon but can happen to any diesel vehicle, whether that be a bus, lorry or even a car. Regular servicing and maintenance typically keeps this sort of thing from happening, hence why its rare to see and would probably never happen to your car (where applicable), etc. The only other reason I can imagine this happening is due to an incorrect repair allowing for failure.

Enviro400H buses like this one are diesel-electric hybrids. The diesel engine is the part that has failed here.
@@exrahtml they’re actually diesel-electric. All of London’s buses have recently had stickers applied to them so firefighters can identify what type of bus they’re dealing with in the event of a fire or a breakout.
London has just got its own Pope.😅

Its either been overfilled with engine oil or engine oil has got into the conbustion chamber. ,i.e turbo failure. The engine will soon go bang
What you see here is an engine turbo failure, causing a bad oil leak into the engines air intake system causing it to rev to the max uncontrolled. The engine would eventually blow or seize when it's used up all the oil reserves.

Dunno much but it’s common sense that engines run on fuel, fuel needs spark, spark needs electricity and that bus will have one. They just can’t be bothered or too worried about their own safety and not the others.
I would not be surprised if this was a stunt to get people to accept to the Ulez charge coming in August.

@Retrii and on those e400s they are all electrical cut off buttons/switches so if there was an electrical fault that occurred they won't work

@@bussesandmore1263 there was power as you can see lights flashing at the rear, but a common thing I've come across is wiring to the emergency stop buttons or electrical pulls can have wiring problems, hence why I prefer the older mechanical ones.. as they have caused less problems from my experience

@@grumpyhale821 Thank you. Most buses have fire extinguishers fitted and drivers need to be told what to do it if their bus runs away.

All comments on here are incorrect infact the problem is down to a sticky diff lock switch that is stuck open allowing all the gear oil to flow up the special chamber in the prop shaft , once to the gearbox back pressure will cause a lift in air volume which then in turn covers the mass air flow sensor then but only then does it blow the turbo

They wouldn't bother with a new engine they will just scrap it , its an old ADL Enviro 400, so they are going to have to replace them at some point and get new buses because of ULEZ soon anyway as it wont meet the requirements, the bus is a 2011 plate bus by the looks of it, so that will just get scrapped and replaced with a new electric bus even sooner then the others will.
Old buses are replaced everyday. This will be replaced withe fully electric or hydrogen.

Emergency stop button won't do anything for a diesel runaway. The engine is sucking in its own oil through the air intake. The only way to stop it is starve it of oxygen by blocking off the air intake.

Oh my goodness. Im a busdriver working in west croydon. The 407 driver needed to switch off the engine and call the engineers, if there was a flame to see anywhere in / around the bus than he needed to call the firebrigade

That is not a fire as the incident will be handled more seriously so it is a Diesel runaway on that E400 Abellio bus. The cause is either the engine failed to start or the bus has lost all the petrol.
If it was a runaway it surely would be black smoke from over dieseling or burning oil ? It's more likely a blown head gasket, engine running like a steam cleaner. Had it happen to a car I had, knackered the engine ( well it was a 50's Ford)

News Flash Bus Breaks Down
It's another diesel runaway. Pro tip: find the air inlet and block it. Failing that crimp/clamp the fuel line.
A shot of Co2 is much safer and quicker.
A runway diesel engine is running on oil. Usually through a blown turbo seal or over filled. Crimping the fuel line won't do anything. Only way to attempt to stop it is to stall it. I've had it happen a few times.
Stalling it is an option with a manual....this bus is more than likely an automatic
Need to crimp the exhaust or bung the air inlet, until the engine oil runs out, lots of it in a bus , it will keep going

The quickest and most effective way is to stop runaway is purposely stall the vehicle. Put the vehicle in gear with the handbrake on and release the clutch.

What would that do? We talking about your little car that has spark plugs or a diesel that runs on compression? You would have to block the fuel line or air inlet. You can't just turn it off.

That's a runaway. Quite common with badly maintained diesel engines, there's nothing you can do apart from wait for it to blow up. Even if you removed the ignition coil and glow plugs it will still go, only way to stop a runaway is to starve the engine of air and diesel, anyone fancy going near the engine when it can blow at any second? Nope.
You can either block the air inlet with a jumper or crimp/clamp the fuel line, both will stop the engine.

Buses in this area of London (Croydon and Sutton) are being upgraded to the clean air versions anyway soon so I don't know what your point is really. You can see the new clean buses on routes like the 154, 80 and various others
