    My mare retained her placenta with her last foal. She foaled at 11pm and still had after birth hanging that morning at 5. We took her to the vet and they flushed her and put her on an antibiotic. She was just fine in a few days.

    Having been a midwife for HUNDREDS of mares of all breeds, the fact she hasn’t expelled her afterbirth isn’t an issue until the 12 hour mark. Oftentimes the foal nursing releases oxytocin that helps the uterus contract and expels the afterbirth.

      Yes I agree! My only experience is being an avid follower of Friesian Horses channel, but I have seen dozens of foals born there, and this is completely normal.

      Retained placenta is a huge problem in draft mares and can absolutely be life-threatening and should not be minimized. I lost a draft mare as the result of a retained placenta and raised an orphan foal so I feel qualified to comment on this issue. I am looking forward to subsequent video updates and hope that both mare and foal are doing well. Jim is justifiably concerned.

      @MizMissiB Месяц назад +25

      @@pchaynes retained placentas happen in all breeds. It can be life threatening if not dealt with correctly. However, that being said, most Vets will tell you to give it 12 hours before you get seriously concerned. At the 12 hour mark, you should have a vet on the way. Whenever I suspected a retained placenta was a strong possibility, I would notify the vet and give them a heads up. Oftentimes they will swing by while they’re on their rounds unless they hear from you that the situation has resolved itself. No need to panic right away. The placenta hanging like that also allows gravity to help the process

    Congratulations on your new foal! Thank you for your videos. My 99 year old father, Ralph, watches frequently and loves the way you work your horses. He thinks a good name for your filly is Maude. We have a picture of my father and his younger brother sitting on one of their work horses named Maude around 1936. She was a Percheron. Her workmate was named Bonnie. He grew up farming with horses and tells the story of taking four horses out to the field to plow as a 9 year old. Your videos bring back great memories for him and us.

    From my experience... A retained placenta is one that is not expelled within 3 hours of the birth. I gather the hanging placenta into a plastic bag and tie it to her tail so that it is not damaged too much and can be examined later. At 2-3 hours I administer oxytocin, followed by antibiotics and later a lavage with sterile saline. No sedation required. I place the mare and foal in a clean dry stall and observe carefully for temperature. Be sure to use iodine on the umbilical of the foal. I just read that it is common with draft horses and I always plan to take care for all births from this mare in the future. Likely to happen again. Usually no harm done and all is well in a few days. All my best!

    Wow!! She just HAD it!! 🥳🥰🥰 I was doing some reading and found it can stay attached 1-3 hrs after. W Bree it was roughly 3 hrs AFTER she was born and the placenta had detached. So this little one was born within 15 minutes when y’all saw it.😮😮
    I watch Friesian Herd on YT. She has said within 15 min need to be up standing, 1 hr nursing and having first poo.
    Totally makes sense w
    Lady. Give her some time, it’ll come off. She is VERY protective of baby. Owner or not she says “stay away. She’s mine”! 😊😊

    • @thirzapeevey2395
      @thirzapeevey2395 Месяц назад

      Vets are not magicians. They can't just snap their fingers and make everything okay. They can also introduce things. They aren't working in a sterile OR, they are working in a barn or pasture. They put on a clean OB glove, but their coveralls have been on them all day, and they just came from another farm and another problem. Sometimes it is best to wait a little while and see if time will take care of things. Same with keeping them in a corral near the barn. Have you seen the level of manure in the barn lot? Better that she foal in a clean place and bring her in if you need to later. I had a mare that did this once. Her foal was very strong and active, and was up before she was. All day long, every time she laid down to clean, the foal would wander off and she would jump up to follow. She did eventually clean, but it just took time.

    Twins is quite uncommon in horses ….retained placenta can be a sign the mare had a difficult birth…hopefully once the foal nurses the mare will release oxytocin and the afterbirth will fully release. I am so thankful when our cows get up after calving and I get the calf to latch on. I hate the thought of a prolapsed uterus…sometimes those cows just won’t stop pushing…getting them to stand and nurse is what works for us. I hope that mare is good and just Mother Nature taking her time on this one….since he seemed extra cooking time. We always say it took longer on them because the white was still being painted on the fancy colored up ones.

    Lady will be fine. I just have to believe that in my heart she is gonna be fine. I know so little about horses BUT it just looked to me that Lady was no bigger this pregnancy than with Bree so I’m leaning toward no second colt. Wishful thinking, maybe but that’s what I am going to be praying for. Maybe a freak thing with the afterbirth but I am going to pray for Lady to be just fine in the end and that colt to be healthy as well. Awaiting further updates but no news can be good news. Jim and Brenda…I’m not sure Bill or I will handle anything being wrong with Lady all too well! I think at times like this I might just be a bit too invested in the Gordon Farm!!!:):):)
