Age 70, revisiting a number of Baby Boomer shows on "oldies" channels, "Have Gun..." stands out. Different, intelligent issues and scripts, some by Gene Roddenberry. But Boone is fascinating: truly ugly, yet able to project ladies-man, gravitas, but humor too.
The Richard Boone Show was excellent. Each week a different story was presented with actors in the ensemble playing different characters. Some of the actors who rotated throughout the series were; Robert Blake, Ed Asner, Guy Stockwell, Bethel Leslie, Jeanette Nolan, Lloyd Buchner, Harry Morgan, and of course, Richard Boone among many others. As a kid, I enjoyed the show and was disappointed it was cancelled.
Richard Boone was one of a very few men that were instrument in my upbringing. Having met him as a young lad, he gave me such incredible advice on how I should deal with life. I am now in my 70s, and I am eternity grateful for his strength and his guidance. I miss him to this day.
I saw Big Jake in the theater as a kid, always will remember his performances. He's excellent in Paladin, don't why he would carry a grudge for years when he did the respected Hec Ramsey TV show in the early '70s, plus a fine voice-over in The Hobbit. The dinosaur movie in the late '70s wasn't bad for the period.
I loved Have Gun, Will Travel and I admired Richard Boone for his super great acting. I couldn't take my eyes off him. His eyes were mesmerizing. He could make you feel like you were in the Old West! I don't blame him for being angry; may God bless you, Mr Boone.

Of all the Classic cowboy characters, Richard Boone as Paladin was my favorite by far. Classically educated, highly intelligent, moral, military graduate, and defender of the weak. A heroic character in every way. An alpha male.
My father was a Richard Boone fan, having watched him in many westerns and Have Gun Will Travel series. I recently watched the 1970 movie The Kremlin Letter where he played a blonde haired, rather brutish CIA agent during the Cold War, he was really good in that. Oh, and the 1953 film Vicki, where he plays a detective, with a good twist at the end. Both movies on here for free, btw 🙂
I think the point is that he was angry, and rightfullly so, that no one at the network had the courtesy to personally inform him of his shows cancellation. That was half of his beef with them right there. I agree with him. God rest his soul.

I really enjoyed The Richard Boone Show. (I was just a kid at the time, of course). He (or the producers, perhaps) had gathered a group of really excellent actors who appeared in a different drama each week. It was like a repertory company on TV. No ongoing stories or characters. I guess the general audience preferred seeing actors in the same characters every week. It was a great show!

For the times Have Gun Will Travel was just too good, brilliantly acted & produced Richard Boone was Palladin. So sorry about the bitterness, it tends to tear one apart. I have watched so many reruns after watching as a teenager in the the 50's.
Of course, Richard Boone was treated poorly and disrespected. I wish he would have channeled his anger into his work and directed and acted more because 'Have Gun, Will Travel' is one of my favorites of all time. I still watch him daily. His Shakespearean touch in the show was what I loved and the humor on some episodes was the best. I miss seeing him in all the great westerns he was in and wish he would have found happiness. Thank you, Richard, for getting me hooked on Westerns, you were one of the best.

Much truth in your presentation. I knew him, he and Lee Marvin were friends. Lee owned the Blue Hawaii fishing boat on the big island. Both. Both, of them were rebels and highly intelligent. Good men in fact. They partied hard, played hard, lived life to its fullest. My father rented that boat. I had the luxury of meeting some high rollers. Just human, men, with great spirits. I miss them. I miss them ALL. The Duke loved on Balboa island. Nice place. I still think that hot tempered Latino beautiful woman drove him nuts😃 Buddy Epson, lived Balboa, I swam on his doc and used his shower, very nice man. Oh yes, I remember the Richard Boone show and I liked it; I liked a lot. Many of the shows that NBC ran canceled them because, somebody higher up didn't like the show. With me it got to be the adage; the better the show the quicker the cancellation.
I’m sure he wasn’t pleased by the gutless way they handled canceling the series, but he’d been in the business long enough, to probably not be overly surprised, and I doubt very much that he carried an emotionally crippling resentment over it to the end. But everyone has weak links, and can be prone to suffer from any number of addictions. But it seems to me, that there were plenty of things that could have been said about him, to honor his memory, rather than try to tarnish it, and drag the memory of a man through the mud, who can no longer defend himself. And he did an excellent job, with his acting talents, of portraying an honorable man, of bravery and virtues; And i’d venture to say that he probably influenced an unknown number of young people, of the value of living a life, in knowing the difference between good & evil, and defending people who can’t defend themselves.
In summary: Richard Allen Boone died in the year 1981 at age 63. Given the fact that Richard Boone had some criticisms of the occupational hazards which around 99% of us human beings experience for around 47 years or so I doubt that he is feeling angry about his show getting cancelled now nor do I believe that he died with a lot of hate in his heart. Unless of course that none of us have heard about anywhere so far that he in some nursing home before his death was often in the habit of trying to beat up nurses who were only trying to help care for him or whatever. Before the day he died like many other people did back then and now too he said that, "Most television was a waste of time". In addition like around 99% of people back then and today too he was prone to be complaining about existing occupational hazards only the elite have to work around. Now long after his death some people are tarnishing his reputaion in this world only because he was a public figure whose voice got more attention than those elitist people had back then and because his persona continues to get more than some elitist people today too. Is that only because they see themselves as being robot like in comparison while projecting about who Richard Boone was based on all of his past doings instead or what?
He died at home in st augustine florida With his wife Claire and a nurse in attendance..he was cared for ..and in a lot of pain..he had throat cancer..and pneumonia. 1981..at age 63. He was in a very weakened physical state. His son Peter mentions this in a bio about him. He was indeed a great talent..he gave so much..and leaves behind a lot of wonderful work on film and TV. As for tv..have gun will will travel is his masterpiece
Boone is well known among those around in his prime! He was great in big Jake and in Hombre with Paul Newman. However, fame is fleeting... the public will always remember John Wayne, Elvis etc however, The kids have already forgotten Bobby Darrin and Sandra Dee... there are tons of great talents but by the time their grandchildren are grown they’re usually mostly forgotten
In the end it's always the bottom line with the networks. It's not too often that a network will try to stick it out with a series if it doesn't quickly becomes a big ratings producer. But even when Richard Boone did small roles he was always good like in the movie The Big Sleep with Robert Mitchum as the star. He had a short series on the NBC Sunday Night Mysterys that featured Columbo, Macmillan And Wife, Banacek, McCloud and then his series Hec Ramsey where Boone played a late 1800s lawman who ended up solving mysterys in his part of the old West.
The network used him and did not care either way about the quality of the show or man. NBC should have been professional about and told him but did not. Richard Boone cared about the artist and people.
Boone had the same likeliness as many men who at the starting Gate have little trouble with managing a troupe which always seems amassed around him Yes after win after win in either business or sport after the first loss He finds himself paralyzed in Fear usually once you again find balance in fluid motion it disappears

To me, Richard Boone was a bit bored during his last year on "Have Gun, Will Travel", and looked like he wanted to be in Movies, which did not pan out for him. I suppose when he saw the skyrocketing career of Steve McQueen who went from TV to Movie Fame, I could see why. Definitely, Boone was a better Actor, but McQueen skyrocketed. James Garner called McQueen "A Poseur and not an Actor", which you could not accuse Boone of. In the end, Boone appeared very tired and run down while playing against John Wayne in those Cowboy Movies at the end of both of their Careers. Wayne appeared more Fit, even though he really wasn't, but Boone was down a lot more.
Did they give him a raw deal? Not really, his show was making money and as far as NOT being told, well, that seems to be standard operating procedure in Hollywood, so he shouldn't have taken it personally, although most would.
The character Paladin and Richard's portrayl of him is unlike any other from that era of TV westerns. Palidin had a great combination of intelligence, wisdom, humor, sophistication and toughness.
I'm not exactly partial to westerns but Have Gun Will Travel was a cut above the run of the mill western. Each episode invited you to look below the surface to find the hidden meaning. Mr. Boone took these principles and applied them to The Richard Boone Show. He approached television as a fine art rather than a mere device for selling products and controversial issues. I wish The Richard Boone Show was available on DVD. I'd love to have a copy of it for my collection. They don't make TV shows like this anymore.

When writer Leonard Freeman was looking for a lead actor to star in his new series Hawaii Five-O, he turned to his good friend Richard Boone to play the part of McGarrett. Having already done a series for CBS (Kona Coast) Boone decided to turn it down.
A hell of a nice man. I met him on one of his promo tours while Have Gun Will Travel was still on TV. He actually stopped to be courteous to a small fan of his in the crowd (namely me).
I find it very interesting that he felt so angry with NBC and still went back to work for them in the 70's in the brief turn of the century series HEC RAMSEY. Wonder what the full story is there?

Man if he was highly critical of television programming way back then, it isn't hard to guess what he would say about it now. It's a hell of a lot worse than it used to be.
Richard was a special character but unfortunately type cast able actor. Networks & Studios have little room for heart on their accounting ledgers. Goodwill is nonexistent for individuals like Richard. I still love him because he was loved by my Grandfather until his death in 1971.
The Richard Boone Show was poorly scheduled by NBC. It aired on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern Time against a more popular CBS sitcom, Petticoat Junction. It also had a built-in disadvantage in that it was an anthology show with no central character and an unevenness in the programming. As an anthology show it lacked a central theme unlike the successful Twilight Zone or the earlier Suspense. Unfortunately the cancellation of the Show by NBC was a turning point in Mr. Boone's personal life and ambitions as a actor.
It's no mistake why every kid in America back then wanted to be a cowboy. Westerns are classic gems. I'm 61 and watch nothing but Classic tv movies and series.
For TV western heroes, I rate Richard Boone #1 (Have Gun Will Travel), followed by James Arness (Gunsmoke) and Chuck Conners (Rifleman). For Western movie heroes, I rate (of course) Clint Eastwood #1, followed by Charles Bronson and Yul Brynner.
RB was a great actor, and great guy. He said it best about the Hollywood crew, 'they were cynical, and couldn't care less'. Brilliant call. Hence, I don't own a TV, or go to the movies to watch the detritus they now produce.

It was part of NBC’s mystery anthology “wheel” and it was a cool show that combined gun slingers with CSI….
THE LAST DINOSAUR is actually pretty good, due largely in part to Richard Boone's excellent perfirmance.

He, and some other Actors of his time were a big part of my childhood, my Dad and I watched Have Gun every episode we could, I really liked this principled Man!

No, no he didn't die with astrong hate! He despised the unjust, cowardly no tallent's unjust / unfair treatments. The yellow cowards were and still are fullfilled with revenge, hate, an mony hunger / greed oh and monipulative feelings agains others. That, tha, that's what he hated. Richard loved life, gave his tallent, according to those days. What did them critiques give to the public = - 0 + Z E R O + VIOLANCE. OH AND THEY WERE WASHING ALWAYS THEIR HANDS. = Tha's what Richard hated / dissapproved of, yes, and the TVwill be the past's he was / is right.
I remeber him most from Have Gun Will Travel, Hombre and the Shootist. A fine actor!

I really enjoyed The Richard Boone Show. (I was just a kid at the time, of course). He (or the producers, perhaps) had gathered a group of really excellent actors who appeared in a different drama each week. It was like a repertory company on TV. No ongoing stories or characters. I guess the general audience preferred seeing actors in the same characters every week. It was a great show!

For the times Have Gun Will Travel was just too good, brilliantly acted & produced Richard Boone was Palladin. So sorry about the bitterness, it tends to tear one apart. I have watched so many reruns after watching as a teenager in the the 50's.
Of course, Richard Boone was treated poorly and disrespected. I wish he would have channeled his anger into his work and directed and acted more because 'Have Gun, Will Travel' is one of my favorites of all time. I still watch him daily. His Shakespearean touch in the show was what I loved and the humor on some episodes was the best. I miss seeing him in all the great westerns he was in and wish he would have found happiness. Thank you, Richard, for getting me hooked on Westerns, you were one of the best.

Oh yes, I remember the Richard Boone show and I liked it; I liked a lot. Many of the shows that NBC ran canceled them because, somebody higher up didn't like the show. With me it got to be the adage; the better the show the quicker the cancellation.

I’m sure he wasn’t pleased by the gutless way they handled canceling the series, but he’d been in the business long enough, to probably not be overly surprised, and I doubt very much that he carried an emotionally crippling resentment over it to the end. But everyone has weak links, and can be prone to suffer from any number of addictions. But it seems to me, that there were plenty of things that could have been said about him, to honor his memory, rather than try to tarnish it, and drag the memory of a man through the mud, who can no longer defend himself.
And he did an excellent job, with his acting talents, of portraying an honorable man, of bravery and virtues; And i’d venture to say that he probably influenced an unknown number of young people, of the value of living a life, in knowing the difference between good & evil, and defending people who can’t defend themselves.

Yes they did, Boone was a great actor especially as a tough guy! NBC should have shown him only the best their biggest stars received.
In summary: Richard Allen Boone died in the year 1981 at age 63. Given the fact that Richard Boone had some criticisms of the occupational hazards which around 99% of us human beings experience for around 47 years or so I doubt that he is feeling angry about his show getting cancelled now nor do I believe that he died with a lot of hate in his heart. Unless of course that none of us have heard about anywhere so far that he in some nursing home before his death was often in the habit of trying to beat up nurses who were only trying to help care for him or whatever. Before the day he died like many other people did back then and now too he said that, "Most television was a waste of time". In addition like around 99% of people back then and today too he was prone to be complaining about existing occupational hazards only the elite have to work around. Now long after his death some people are tarnishing his reputaion in this world only because he was a public figure whose voice got more attention than those elitist people had back then and because his persona continues to get more than some elitist people today too. Is that only because they see themselves as being robot like in comparison while projecting about who Richard Boone was based on all of his past doings instead or what?

With his wife Claire and a nurse in attendance..he was cared for ..and in a lot of pain..he had throat cancer..and pneumonia. 1981..at age 63. He was in a very weakened physical state. His son Peter mentions this in a bio about him. He was indeed a great talent..he gave so much..and leaves behind a lot of wonderful work on film and TV. As for tv..have gun will will travel is his masterpiece
Boone is well known among those around in his prime! He was great in big Jake and in Hombre with Paul Newman. However, fame is fleeting... the public will always remember John Wayne, Elvis etc however, The kids have already forgotten Bobby Darrin and Sandra Dee... there are tons of great talents but by the time their grandchildren are grown they’re usually mostly forgotten

In the end it's always the bottom line with the networks. It's not too often that a network will try to stick it out with a series if it doesn't quickly becomes a big ratings producer. But even when Richard Boone did small roles he was always good like in the movie The Big Sleep with Robert Mitchum as the star. He had a short series on the NBC Sunday Night Mysterys that featured Columbo, Macmillan And Wife, Banacek, McCloud and then his series Hec Ramsey where Boone played a late 1800s lawman who ended up solving mysterys in his part of the old West.
Gratuitous to mention marital problem... Alcohol and others painfully obvious...but his faithful wife could do without this being dredged up...
The network used him and did not care either way about the quality of the show or man. NBC should have been professional about and told him but did not. Richard Boone cared about the artist and people.

To me, Richard Boone was a bit bored during his last year on "Have Gun, Will Travel", and looked like he wanted to be in Movies, which did not pan out for him. I suppose when he saw the skyrocketing career of Steve McQueen who went from TV to Movie Fame, I could see why. Definitely, Boone was a better Actor, but McQueen skyrocketed.
James Garner called McQueen "A Poseur and not an Actor", which you could not accuse Boone of.
In the end, Boone appeared very tired and run down while playing against John Wayne in those Cowboy Movies at the end of both of their Careers. Wayne appeared more Fit, even though he really wasn't, but Boone was down a lot more.
When I was a kid I thought his name was Wire Palladin when I read his business card LOL
Did they give him a raw deal? Not really, his show was making money and as far as NOT being told, well, that seems to be standard operating procedure in Hollywood, so he shouldn't have taken it personally, although most would.

The character Paladin and Richard's portrayl of him is unlike any other from that era of TV westerns. Palidin had a great combination of intelligence, wisdom, humor, sophistication and toughness.
I'm not exactly partial to westerns but Have Gun Will Travel was a cut above the run of the mill western. Each episode invited you to look below the surface to find the hidden meaning. Mr. Boone took these principles and applied them to The Richard Boone Show. He approached television as a fine art rather than a mere device for selling products and controversial issues. I wish The Richard Boone Show was available on DVD. I'd love to have a copy of it for my collection. They don't make TV shows like this anymore.

A hell of a nice man. I met him on one of his promo tours while Have Gun Will Travel was still on TV. He actually stopped to be courteous to a small fan of his in the crowd (namely me).
From what I've read over the years, the vast majority of actors learned their show had been canceled from the trade papers.
I find it very interesting that he felt so angry with NBC and still went back to work for them in the 70's in the brief turn of the century series HEC RAMSEY. Wonder what the full story is there?

Man if he was highly critical of television programming way back then, it isn't hard to guess what he would say about it now. It's a hell of a lot worse than it used to be.
Richard was a special character but unfortunately type cast able actor. Networks & Studios have little room for heart on their accounting ledgers. Goodwill is nonexistent for individuals like Richard. I still love him because he was loved by my Grandfather until his death in 1971.

Richard got a bum deal
The Richard Boone Show was poorly scheduled by NBC. It aired on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern Time against a more popular CBS sitcom, Petticoat Junction. It also had a built-in disadvantage in that it was an anthology show with no central character and an unevenness in the programming. As an anthology show it lacked a central theme unlike the successful Twilight Zone or the earlier Suspense. Unfortunately the cancellation of the Show by NBC was a turning point in Mr. Boone's personal life and ambitions as a actor.

For TV western heroes, I rate Richard Boone #1 (Have Gun Will Travel), followed by James Arness (Gunsmoke) and Chuck Conners (Rifleman). For Western movie heroes, I rate (of course) Clint Eastwood #1, followed by Charles Bronson and Yul Brynner.
