    You can compare the turn-based system to strategy games. You don't win by having the best reflexes and timing, you win by preparing for battle and reading the situation. When you're up against a tough boss, or low on health and looking for the next save point, the battle system proves to be just as thrilling as real time.

    The art book and special box aren't pre-order bonuses. All first edition releases will come with them. However, XSEED has said they are doing a limited print, so if you really want those items, your safest bet would be to pre-order. Also, if you haven't heard yet, the mini-soundtrack will be a pre-order bonus to those who pre-order from Gamestop, EB Games Canada, and Amazon. You should receive all the extras if you pre-order from one of the places mentioned above.

    This is my favorite game now, or it at least qualifies. It didn't focus on this huge adventure that, when you think about it tends to just pad hours played. Instead it focused on the story and developing the characters. One of the best games ever.

  • @OniLink99999
    @OniLink99999 12 лет назад

    @UltimateIllz Keep in mind, that's not 20 hours of 'gameplay' - that's 20 hours of story. There's the meaty online multiplayer, side-quests (about 10 hours worth according to some forum posts I saw when the Japanese version came out)...not to mention some good old fashioned exploration. Still not too lengthy for an RPG, I agree, but it's still longer than most games nowadays and it's not like it costs more because it's a JRPG and so should be longer. I say judge by quality, not quantity =)

    Quick question: Does the length of the game (or the game itself) justify a purchase. I hear it's only 30 hours long. Xenoblade lasted about 100. I don't have an online connection for the Wii either.

    It's 20 hours if you rush through the story without taking the time to explore and do quests. The developer has said that the game will run 30 hours with side quests included(course, the game can run around 40+ hours if you take the time to fully explore, level up weapons, revisit dungeons for items, battle in the arenas, etc., etc.)

  • @DivineAria

    Being a Nintendo IP isn't why XSEED kep the NoE translations/voices. They kept them because XSEED felt it was extremely done well. They could have changed the voices/translations if they wanted to. Xenoblade's sales did not have a direct affect on what XSEED wanted to publish because Xenoblade has nothing to do with XSEED. They said in an interview that TLS fit what they look for when choosing titles to publish and some of the team member who played the game said they loved it.

    Well, If you preorder the game at Gamestop, you get a free soundtrack CD featuring seven memorable tracks from the game. In addition, all first edition copies come in a special box with a 40 page soft cover art book featuring concept art and all that jazz. So if you want both, I suggest preordering the game and buy it at launch.

    Interesting fact about this game. The creator of Final Fantasy originally said that Last Story would be his "Last" game, similar to how he said Final Fantasy would be his "Final" game, but again he retracted his statement but now you know where he got the title idea from.

    It's also waay more combat oriented, like mass effect, so the shorter play time is rather warranted, plus you get a new game+ when you're done (It's even chrono trigger style)

  • @RandomCommenterful
    @RandomCommenterful 12 лет назад

    Maybe sales didn't affect TLS's release directly, but the sales of Xenoblade showed that there is still indeed a market for good JRPG's in North America; more specifically on the Wii. That(probably)encouraged TLS's release.
    Anyways, my point was that Xenoblade and TLS aren't in competition with each other since the release dates are almost two months apart. If they were both released within the same month, then I could have seen the competition. But two months apart? That's a bit of a stretch.

  • @leadality
    @leadality 12 лет назад +1

    I recently bought the game. I'd say I'm around halfway through at this point. Last major game I sat through was Xenoblade.
    I'd highly recommend Last Story as well. Only thing I would change at this point is how easy combat can be at times. Each party member has 5 lives per fight-sequence, including the protagonist you control. This allows for plenty of mistakes in fights.
    I'm hoping for some sort of difficulty increase option once I've beaten the game.
    So tl;dr, they're both amazing games.

  • @mountaindewitt

    @3000whateverman You can't really judge that from a couple of gameplay clips. What makes you think it's boring?

  • @TheWolfbrute
    @TheWolfbrute 11 лет назад

    Sure, you can play the game and beat it in perhaps 10 hours or more, but you will be missing side quests which helps you understand other characters in the game. Plus, the game does give rewards for you exploring places like the city which continually leaves stats upgrades lying around the grounds in certain places. There is no real reason to rush the main story if there are other things to do.

    I agree with your theory makes since to me. But I think it's safe to say Jrpgs don't sell on 360 anywhere not just in Japan they don't sell well in the US either. The western rpgs are the ones that sell on the 360 in the US. PS3 though I have no clue what sells on that.

  • @assentodele
    @assentodele 12 лет назад

    I suppose it depends on what you like. If you're a fan of RPG's (and JRPG's in particular) this game is an absolute no brainer. It suffers from a little bit of linearity but the game gives you the option of re-visiting places and doing sidequests which help break it up. The story isn't really groundbreaking, but the characters are really solid and help completely glaze over any of the plot's shortcomings. The game looks beautiful for a Wii game, too. I'd definitely recommend. :) Hope you enjoy.

    For some reason, I think it would be fun if JRPGs went the massive battles route. By massive battles I mean, 6-10 people involved in the fight, and the battles themselves hard as hell. It would be an action RPG of course. Couldn't imagine turn-based with something like that.

    Yeah, I get it. But "Final Fantasy" was Square Enix's last attempt to make a profitable game. Hironobu Sakaguchi, in interviews, said that "The Last Story" was a very similar situation, which is why it has the title it does. The naming was intentional because he wanted to put as much energy into TLS as possible, like it was actually his last game.

    I didn't say they aren't important, I just said they aren't as important as things like story and game play. Like I know some people who only like judge a game by it's graphics alone, and when I ever ask them "Whats the story" or " How's the game play", and they always say, and I quote, "Who cares, it just needs to look good". I try to tell them that story and game play are more important than graphics, but they never listen.

  • @michaelcarrig

    Such an incredible freakin' game. The 20 hour JRPG should be a new design form. While this game is nowhere near as deep as Lost Odyssey, Xenoblade or Final Fantasy XII; it is extremely streamlined, playable and joyful. It is undoubtedly one of the best battle systems I have played in a while and it takes great features from FFXII, Vagrant Story, Valkyria Chronicles and cover based games.
    If it weren't for the slowdown it would be a 10/10. It is just a bit ahead of its time.

    yes you do it clicks off that it does it but it does not give money nor exp till you go back to the person that gives you the quest. Not one of the quests that I have done gave me the rewards auto only clicked it off my quest lists. Not one auto gave me a thing. And you can look at the missions online and even they tell you where to find your quest giver and when they appear. I got at least ten quests done that ive not gotten the reward for and have a hard time finding the giver.

  • @DivineAria
    @DivineAria 12 лет назад

    The voice actors and combat are all great, IMO. There are so many different elements involved with the battle system that I don't feel it's necessary to need 10 different combat moves for each characters. The game is chaotic and busy enough without all that. I will agree the character models look a bit stiff at times. However, the graphics are nicely polished and, in general, it's one of the best looking wii-games. Only complaints I have is the slow frame rate and the camera being too close.

    I would imagine that the experience would be a bigger driving point for the value of a game, rather then its length. NiGHTS, Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario World, and Resident Evil 1 could all be completed in a matter of a few hours. If its longevity you're looking for, try FPS multiplayer matches and MMOs. However, I wouldn't say only those specific genres deserve a 60 dollar price tag, though.
    With the exception of RPGs, most game are typically short, especially the action adventure titles.

  • @DivineAria

    The slow down is a problem, but like you said its not gamebreaking. The game is stil great on the wii and honestly I feel it wouldn't benefit at all except no FPS problems and slightly clearer visuals. As for the controller style, it's preferenctial. I actualy prefer the nunchuk over classic controller because the game was made for the normal style of control and it just feels much more fluid and natural.

    I'm halfway through my game(chapter 26) and I've put in about 22 hours. By the time I'm done, I'll probably be over 40 hours. Believe me, it is only 20 hours long IF you rush straight through the story and don't do anything else. There are actually many things to do from exploring the city to collecting ink dyes, playing mini games, arenas, optional quests, etc, etc. It's not open-world exploration like Xenoblade(which is actually too big for me) but it's not linear like XIII either.

    The 360 or PS3 could handle some of the game's bigger sequences better. I've noticed some slow down during a chase scene and during some of the bigger battles. It's not terrible or game breaking, but it is there and wouldn't be on the HD systems. Other than that though, I agree it wouldn't make the game much better. It still plays fine on the Wii, people just need to make sure to use the classic controller pro.

    I can say as a long-time RPG fan that this is one of my favorite games ever.
    It proves that even a linear, 20-hour RPG can be powerful and inspiring. The Last Story makes all those 80-hour open-world RPGs seem utterly useless by comparison.

    I don't see how this game could be any better if they put it on either those two consoles aside from graphics.
    Besides, part of the hype for this game is the the fact that it's ON the Wii.

    Esp if your higher lvls in the main game. Dont rush in at the boss you will get yourself killed and make for weak meele attacks. Work together and do your job right either meele or magic and you will get through the tough boss fights better and win important items for your main game.

    I don't think that's the problem. Two genre's are played most in this generation; RPGs and Shooters. Millions of them play RPGs. The problem is that its on the Wii and it released when a lot of people don't care for the Wii anymore. Great game though.

    Also, the problem with the more recent FF games is that they've lost their core engagement. They try to dazzle us with strikingly beautiful cutscenes, however the story is less than stellar, so they don't mean jack. They've forgotten what was originally important-- The story. Not how it was presented. The presentation is just a tool.

    The problem after playing Xenoblade Chronicles is that all JP RPGs will disappoint you :( ....

      ***** actually,I'd advocate playing pandoras tower after xenoblade

    • @markasscop
      @markasscop 7 лет назад +1

      the game's quite different from xenoblade,so comparisions shouldnt be too prevalent
      I dont know,I just feel like pandoras tower is a nice way to end off the rainfall trilogy,and to me at least,its ending(s) lingered in my mind longer than xenoblade's
      plus its cool to look back on pandoras tower being the wii's last great game before it stopped being supported

    Playing Wii games on the Wii U will still make you use the original Wii controls. You can get a classic controller for the for about 20 bucks now and use that instead.

    Let's change the subject then. What would be your rating of The Last Story? Also, give a brief explanation why you would give it that rating...if you don't mind of course.

    Because J-RPGs typically don't sell well on the Xbox 360 in Japan. They probably sell very well in Japan on the PS3, but not so well on the PS3 in NA. So, I imagine the Wii is a happy medium for J-RPG sells worldwide. I could be way off base here, but that's basically my theory.

    @wishingwell24 Final Fantasy was known by its name because it was during a time where Squaresoft (at the time) was pretty much on its last leg. it was the be the final game released by square, but the game became a hit. idk why Sakaguchi named this game the last story, probably because he loved his work on the original final fantasy games. it comes off as being a clone in a sense though, in name and logo styling.

    The GameStop where I live told me that this comes out anywhere from August 15 or 16. I told them that there website says it comes out tomorrow yet they say they were told otherwise. It will come out tomorrow for sure right?

    The controls took a lot of getting used to but this is an extremely likeable game. It's kinda like Valkyria Chronicles and Dynasty Warriors in one package.

    The story was great. I think people really only complained about the new battle system. I loved it though; it was much more interactive than previous ones, since shifting paradigms at the right times was thought provoking.
