This is a nice change of pace from some of the horrifying cave diving videos on youtube that I've been watching. This shows how fun and beautiful the sport can be once you have the proper training.
This was published the same year I learned to dive. About a year later I found this video and it ultimately became my inspiration to undertake cave training. Thank you so very much for posting this and sharing your experiences!
Hey Fredrik, One SUPER movie with tons of points on the cave diver training. All you need now is to make a movie about your equipment, what you need to complete the course and how to set it all up for the best dive. Once again - a top movie.
What a beautiful and visually stunning video! Loved the video quality. Also, it shows just how awesome diving in general and cave diving in particular is! I enjoyed it very much, thank you for uploading. I'm sooo looking forward to my upcoming backpacking months in South-East Asia where I will spend my time diving :)
Fredrik, excellent video. I just ran across this and it brought back some forgotten memories of the cave diving training I took in Feb. 1988. I remember that training like this re-defined my entire approach to diving. It is amazing how many new sites have been uncovered and how commercialized the sites have become. I know you were in training during your dive to "Luke's Hope", but I am curious if were you able to visit the "Room of Tears" or the "Crystal Palace" that is a left jump shortly after "Luke's Hope"? FYI, I encountered my first cave divers at the "Carwash" in 1987 and they told me about "The Chamber of the Ancients", I was hooked for the next 10 years.
Thanks, I did get a chance to visit the Room of tears the year after. :D I have been back the following two years. I need to make some more videos. It did take a couple of months to finish this video. And soon I will be ready to make some new ones. I got tons of good material.
Try some normal caving first to get you familiar with the cave environment. In Britain (where cave diving originated) most cave divers are cavers first who take up diving to explore places that can only be reached by diving. This gives a different perspective/mindset to many other countries such as the US where most cave divers are open water divers first, but have little if any experience of caving. Techniques in Britain tend to be a bit different too as our caves often have small, tight passages with very poor visibility, so things like the buddy system are impractical. Side mounted rigs were also first developed in Britain by Mike Boon in the 1960s as open water rigs weren't practical in British caves. Consequently the CDG (Cave Diving Group) techniques are very good for solo diving which is what's required in British caves. Not that the US based cave diving courses such as in this video aren't excellent too, it's just a slightly different outlook. The US courses were developed after numerous fatalities of open water divers having a go at cave diving and not realising how different an environment it is to open water diving. They then looked at the CDG's methods and adapted them to their own needs in Florida's blue holes which tend to have big roomy passages and excellent visibility. And of course improved safety techniques and better equipment continue to be developed all the time. I highly recommend Martyn Farr's excellent book "The Darkness Beckons." which gives a history of cave diving from it's start up to the present day (get the 2017 4th edition which is the most up to date). This film by Sid Perou is based on an early edition of Martyn's book: ruclips.net/channel/UCiYypZaslo-jl9ykq6jt5RQ Martyn also runs cave diving courses: www.farrworld.co.uk/
Thank you for the wonderful movie. It was really informations and awesome to check out the caves. The squeeze was heart thumping. Look forward to seeing more videos...:D. All the best for you cave/diving adventures....:D
Interesting to see the different training environment from when I did mine back in 2000 at Ginnie Springs and area. You did yours with side mount, we did all of ours with doubles. The course was split into Cavern,Cave Intro and Full Cave. RIP. Wes Skiles Nice video, thank you for sharing.
By far the best video on RUclips showing the journey from Cavern through Full Cave. Excellent quality and very educational. I'll be doing my cave training this spring down that way. I'm sure I'll be training in many of the spots you were in.
I just finished sidemount essentials wit Vas Proud in Gozo, awesome experience and certainly not the last course with Vas or Steve. It is still a long way to go before thinking about cave training but it looks like it is definitely worth the effort. Thanks for the video, awesome !
There is only one thing left to be said: WOW!!! o.O Very nice video. As a passionate Cameraman i know how much work is put in cutting this together. Well done. Go on ! :D or as a diver i may say: Good air ;)
This is an awesome video, thank you for helping make it so clear how important training is on cave diving. Absolutely beautiful places, and a great video I even liked the music. I have never cave dived just read a lot about it and how dangerous it can be without people taking the time to get proper training. Thanks again for showing how fun it can be to get that training.
Fredrik Liljeblad Kudos to you then, I find it hard to believe that the first time you enter a cave there is not an element of fear in it. Fear mixed with knowledge is what keeps people alive.
Lovely Team, Lovely Spirit, Lovely Music!!! what can i say more! all the best and keep the good work! hope to dive with you one day! best of luck from Tunisia
See this is why people need this. Cause the first time u lost the line couldn’t see and had an air issue there was instructor and a safer environment. If it had happened for the first time deep in a cave u would probably be dead no chance to practice more
Take some time to find a good instructor, it makes all the difference. And if you notice their training is not up to this level demand money back, and change instructor.
Fredrik Liljeblad Thank you for the advice. As a dry caver and diver, it's something that I've wanted to do for a long time. I have a cavern course in the works for November and working on an Intro class around the first of the year.
Hey nice Video! I've never ever seen a cave-diving video in my intire life. I can only say that your recordings have made my heart beat faster. I'll begin with cave diving license as soon as i got my last tec diving licenses. Please continue to make such great videos because you can lose yourself realy quickly in them and forget about the time by dreaming. A big thanks to you from Germany. In love your Daniel
Yes, as others have said this has to be one of the best "amateur cave diving videos". By amateur I mean the production quality not being National Geographic level.
wow, I just stumbled on this video and I am frankly impressed. This is not only the best cave diving video I have ever seen, it is one of the most beautiful and comprehensive diving videos ever. Congratulations and thank you very much, I have actually watched it twice, I enjoyed too much! You definitely need to do more technical videos like this man
I have to say after just finishing my cavern training, this video was extremely well done and the captions were perfect. I was so excited for you both for completing your course. I felt excited when you both found the line!! I know how stressful that is and how utterly exciting to have found that line. I do have a question for both of the divers, do you have floats on your read dump valve strings? It looks like you both had a float to make it easier to reach, but does that also increase your chance to have that become entangled? Well done! and Thanks Steve for recording so much footage!
Lol, yeah the plastic thing broke, it was the one thing that was similar size and not heavy, works perfectly for me. :) I haven't managed to entangle myself with it (yet) :)
i wish i hadnt this problem with my ears..god i would love to dive -.- thanks so much for sharing this experience :) 10/10 quality stuff here definatly recommended to watch!
Thanks for the quick reply. Just love that area for diving I took my Cave course on the Island of Cozumel but want to do some some serious cave stuff on the mainland. Those guys were really lucky to have you do this video, I know from experience just how much work is involved. Happy and safe diving my friend!
i seriously dont i have always appreciated the open waters, i have never been over confident with mother nature, i have always been truly afraid a bit with open waters, every time i see open waters my palms start to sweat, and even diving its to like being in a small space because it is dark and you are surrounded by water in the pitch dark, so how these dudes go deep diving is beyond me, but i have always truly respected cave and deep water divers and guys who deep dive to fix oil pumps!!!
I was brought here from @MrBallen and this led me to @DiveTalk Great video!!
This is one of the best Cave diving videos on all of YT, thank you so much for sharing
+Freakschwimmer Thank you so much for taking time to write the nice comment. It will encourage me to make more.
Fully agree! The best movie for Friday night!
@@FredrikLiljeblad Håller med, jävligt bra film!

Done 7 cavern dives so far. Some of my best dives, all in Mexico
This video is National Geographic level AMAZING!!! People pay for this quality of footage. God Speed my friend
+Randolph Wall Thanks. :D
Fascinating, challenging adventurous. If only I had the nerve.
Another wonderful video without techno boom boom music and with explanations THANK YOU!!!!

Hi, thanks.. I left that work for Steve.. Check out www.sidemounting.com ;-) I can't compete with his work.
WELL DONE, the video quality and music are absolutely awesome. A joy to watch!
Thanks, editing and selecting music did take a while 😀
This is one of the few videos without HD in the title and yet it's one of the vest videos about cave diving! Thanks for sharing!
One of my favorite cave vids on youtube, really shows what to expect from the training process. Thanks for posting, subscribed!
+Walt P I'm glad you liked it. That was exactly the reason for making the film. I was lucky to get Steve Martin (sidemounting.com) to be the trainer.
Ola, what about the exercices coming back from the cave mask off / lights off ?
That open water area you get out at looks damn incredible also
I just finished an autobiography by Jill Heinerth. It was amazing - I was both terrified and fascinated by this sport.
What a beautiful and visually stunning video! Loved the video quality. Also, it shows just how awesome diving in general and cave diving in particular is! MrBob1551 Thanks, glad you liked it. :D Working on a new out soon.
Fredrik Liljeblad Sweet!
Great video demonstrating the importance of training for such pursuits and, more importantly, if you have the right temperament for such diving.
Really amazing! You’ve inspired me to try out cave diving too
Such an incredible journey to be a certified cave diver! Congratulations! Very well done. And thanks so much for creating the video!!
This is The best training cave dive vídeo that I ever saw. Congratulation for The vídeo and training. You did a really good Job on Booth.
Very inspiring Fredrik. Great edit.
This is awesome and makes me feel like I'm in there, the music is pretty nice too!

Top video. Well done. Good information. Excellent videography. Congratulations from an old Australian Cave Diver. Michael.
Thanks :D
Aching to one day maybe try this myself. On the other hand absolutely terrified by the concept of having no quick way out when in trouble.
