its not just the absorbance. it also has to be very light and soft as the gold is quite thin and rubs off quickly. sure we could probably make something equivalent but not much better. and it would take time and almost certainly be more expensive then bread.
I would challenge any material scientist with an interest in making a bunch of money with developing a superior, more cost effective and better performing process than breadcrumbs 😅
I think they might be able to replace the bread crumbs with something a little more modern
