And I have a callous on the top joint of my right middle finger because of how I knit.
3000 labelled hands would be an interesting dataset to train a neural network on. Would it be capable of classifying the instrument (or the instrument group) correctly?
Yesss, someone in the team please do it. Judging from this video, if they are representable to the 3000, consider similarity to across some instruments... perhaps 20% accuracy is good enough?

I wonder if you guys would be able to guess my hands. I'm a flute player, but I don't have very long or elegant fingers like I imagine other flute players having. xD I guess my perception of the ideal flute hands also comes from my perception of the ideal piano hands-- my childhood friend Michael, who has the most beautiful, long fingers!! Guys, let's make it clear once and for all. Lung size or lung capacity doesn't matter in wind instruments! It's the controll and efficiency of the player that matter, as well as teaching your brain that you're not going to die from not taking a new breath after blowing for 10-15 seconds.
Except flute. The instrument doesn't give any pushback on a flute so if you want to make some of those long phrases you have to have decent lung capacity.
I'm a not particularly tall flutist (1.60m), and this rule applies to flute as well. Yes, it does help to some extent to have bigger lungs but still, you can play long phrases without huge lungs.
As a clarinetist, lung capacity matters. But lung capacity is more about training than it is a physical characteristic - most people who don’t have a physical disability can build up enough capacity. And you can still play well even if you can’t, but it will definitely be harder - especially for instruments like bass clarinet that just take a lot of air.

I play the clarinet, piano, ukulele, and alto saxophone, and it can be painful to hold up the whole saxophone with your thumb because of how straight/bent back it has to be to play properly, but I haven't gotten any calluses or blisters from it yet. 😅
As a horn player, I would say that it depends on how you place your fingers on the keys. If you mainly use the top of your fingers to press the keys, like I do, longer nails on the left hand are really annoying. I always cut mine very short. Many people play with the pad of the fingers though, and in that case it doesn't really matter. The right hand doesn't matter either way.
one thing i love about the recorder is that they come in so many different sizes. some are better for small hands and some are better for big hands, but most can be played by most people.
@@morusalba6405 Yes!! I do have a quite uneven fingers and thus for some of my fingers the bigger recorders are better and for some the smaller. Recorder is just vertisile.
You guys have no idea how much you helped me lately, it has been a bad and stressful month the whole last January and having so many old videos of yours to watch and so many new ones gave me a lot of material to get distracted. I even used some videos that I knew by heart as a background to fall asleep (only to suddenly remember that their volume was often NOT suitable to sleep at all!). Thank you!
I like this episode a lot because I personally enjoy observing others’ hands, especially athletes and instrument performers. You can really tell their hard work just by looking at their hands.
For the harp one I literally jokingly, randomly out of the blue said harp. Literally just guessing because I saw the callouses on both hands. and when I tell you I screamed when I got it right 😂😂
I wanted to submit my hands, but the courier wouldn't accept dismembered body parts. Said something about company policy, so I dont know how the rest of you did it. Kudos tho!
3:30 I instantly knew guitar, because that's how my finger nails look as well for guitar. Short on the hand for the fret board to actually play, but long nails on the other hand for strumming the strings. It's for fingerstyle, commonly used for classical guitar, because the nails give a brighter tone than fingers do. So it's like having a pick on the end of each finger. So not a trick, you just thought to hard about it
Playing guitar and violin is a bit awkward at times. I cut my nails normally for my left hand, but I need long nails on my right for my acoustic guitar (I prefer classical with short nails, but it's impractical for the steel strings of the acoustic). I compromised, with my thumb and pinky being cut normally, so I can hold the bow correctly, and all the rest are long
Same! 😂 But I play double bass and classical guitar, and I have only 3 fingers with semi-long nails. Long nails on right hand is actually hindering for playing pizz on bass so I have to find the right length that can compromise for playing both 🤯
lmao same here! like half of my right thumbnail is filed off and my pinky is short but then the rest are long and my left hand is just short. my roommate (who’s got a whole nail business) has a heart attack every time she sees them but oh well 😭
As a classical guitarist I knew immediatly that number 4 is also a classical guitarist. My mother always complains how weird it looks that one hand has long nails and the other hand short one :'D
Now that could be embarrassing. I've been learning violin for 4 months and at a stage that some would reach in a fortnight... but hey, it's not a competition and I'm looking to the next 15 years before I'm half decent!
I will never get over the fact of how happy they look at the very beginning of this episode and this happy "hello everyone!!" from brett skskksk i seriously thrive on their happiness
0:11 you can't believe people submitted their hands? Well, you should realize that when you ask, no matter how ridiculous, your fans will support you 🥰🥰🥰
I was surprised that Brett actually remembered bassoon existed and even guessed it once lol. It would so awesome to see twoset do an episode about learning bassoon.
LMAO as a flautist, I was checking my hands throughout the video and as soon as the flautist came up I did a comparison and went "yup, definitely flute!"
I contemplated whether to submit, but I'm a bit unsecure about my playing (which sucks), and also, my right hand thumb's nail recently broke (which should be a dead giveaway). BTW, was surprised by William having a long nail on a pinky, and also having a reasonably short nail on the thumb - most classical guitarists grow themselves a monster there.
My thumb nail had also recently broke! 🤣🤷♂️ though I’ve never been one for the ‘monstrous’ long thumb myself. I clip my pinky short every once and a while, when I remember to! 😅
I have to give props to Vince for that amazing rendition of God Save the King. That piece is technically difficult for pretty much every instrument, even my instruments (euphonium and tuba)
Loveliness! 🙌🏼 Beautiful everything, when "CAFE" came on, thought of an incredibly beautiful photograph of Miles Davis' hands in the playing position by Irving Penn. Saw it in an exhibition, frozen in a huge frame, memorable. Lots of emotion in simple human hands, or delicious pawsies, with a lifetime/a lifetime of music behind them.
As a flute player here is how you can identify one (especially a young one) When their hands are resting, their right pinkie finger is stretched out because you can’t reach the dam key 😭
The moment I saw the harp one, I didn't even notice the fact that the pinkies didn't have calluses. I just saw the bigger callus on the left middle finger and I immediately knew
Seems like they don't have any friends who play guitar and recorder (not in the orchestra), otherwise they would know: - How a guitarist's hands look like (most obvious hands ever) - Recorder players are like percussionists, they play the whole range of their instrument. And trust me, long fingers are hella useful to play a bass recorder, even the tenor.
6:19 I immediately recognized the harpist's calluses! *Harp gang uniiite* It's so painful when after a while whithout playing they are gone, and you must to start again with tons of string tension😭
... I gotta say, as an illustrator, I really appreciate all these hand photo references.

@@SusanCallHutchison Except you don't have your hand curled up in a fist in your bell. It's open. :)
@@lottawiklund8606 Ah. Thanks!
Allow me to feel attacked: there are much bigger recorders than the sopranino, so big hands really are welcome :)
Exactly!!!
one thing i love about the recorder is that they come in so many different sizes.
some are better for small hands and some are better for big hands, but most can be played by most people.
@@morusalba6405 very true.
@@morusalba6405 Yes!! I do have a quite uneven fingers and thus for some of my fingers the bigger recorders are better and for some the smaller. Recorder is just vertisile.
Yeah, exactly. I specifically uploaded a sopranino recorder vid to mess with them :D I actually mostly play the alto which is bigger
I love how Brett just took his bow out of nowhere, like, prepared for everything. 😂
I remember the piece that french horn player was playing.
Its bring back my memory of my solos song.
6:37 a harpist players calluses look more like blisters. It’s occasionally white blisters.
Thank you!
hope you’re doing better now mate
I love getting to hear other subscribers play their instruments! What a talented crew!
I’ve been waiting for this!
Same,and didn't have my hands
I always have very long nails but I play piano, ukelele, and guitar so that would have been quite confusing.
I play cello and my calluses are barely noticeable, but they are definitely there if you felt them
I like this episode a lot because I personally enjoy observing others’ hands, especially athletes and instrument performers. You can really tell their hard work just by looking at their hands.
brett has so much energy this video i actually love it! i'm glad they both seem in high spirits!!
He's done a few intros recently I notice too...
@@wakingtheworld same :D i hope it means good things for the both of them!
as a person who likes looking at hands (no, not in a kinky way), i like this also bc it gives me reference for drawing :]
I play three instruments, I wonder wich one they’d guess if they saw my hands
For the harp one I literally jokingly, randomly out of the blue said harp. Literally just guessing because I saw the callouses on both hands.
and when I tell you I screamed when I got it right 😂😂
PLEASE DO A PART TWO!!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Yes !!!
Normal people: i cut my nails because i dont want them long
Musicians: i cut my nails because i have to sing
I wanted to submit my hands, but the courier wouldn't accept dismembered body parts.
Said something about company policy, so I dont know how the rest of you did it. Kudos tho!
3:30 I instantly knew guitar, because that's how my finger nails look as well for guitar. Short on the hand for the fret board to actually play, but long nails on the other hand for strumming the strings. It's for fingerstyle, commonly used for classical guitar, because the nails give a brighter tone than fingers do. So it's like having a pick on the end of each finger. So not a trick, you just thought to hard about it
yes you have to trust your instincts more, brett
The moment she started playing the cello I got goosebumps. Just enjoyed it.
The dog was the best of them all, not gonna lie. These type of videos are so fun.
Playing guitar and violin is a bit awkward at times. I cut my nails normally for my left hand, but I need long nails on my right for my acoustic guitar (I prefer classical with short nails, but it's impractical for the steel strings of the acoustic). I compromised, with my thumb and pinky being cut normally, so I can hold the bow correctly, and all the rest are long
Same! 😂
But I play double bass and classical guitar, and I have only 3 fingers with semi-long nails. Long nails on right hand is actually hindering for playing pizz on bass so I have to find the right length that can compromise for playing both 🤯
same bro! i play violin and guitar, my right hand is a confused nail mess
lmao same here! like half of my right thumbnail is filed off and my pinky is short but then the rest are long and my left hand is just short. my roommate (who’s got a whole nail business) has a heart attack every time she sees them but oh well 😭
Use finger picks. It will solve your problems
@@RodrigoSilva-cy4no Finger picks can never match the sound of natural nails, at least not the ones i've tried.
As a classical guitarist I knew immediatly that number 4 is also a classical guitarist. My mother always complains how weird it looks that one hand has long nails and the other hand short one :'D
Watching this makes me realize how soothing classic guitar is. The sound is like an oasis in the desert.
fun video idea: people send audio recordings of their playing and brett and eddy guess how long they've been playing
Now that could be embarrassing. I've been learning violin for 4 months and at a stage that some would reach in a fortnight... but hey, it's not a competition and I'm looking to the next 15 years before I'm half decent!
THEY ACTUALLY DID IT I SAW THEIR INSTA STORY
@@thecatsays4666 IKR I WAS REWATCHING THIS VIDEO AND I SAW THE COMMENT LIKE OMG 😮
"Lot of them were rickrolls, thank you very much for them"
This is why I love these guys ❤
I will never get over the fact of how happy they look at the very beginning of this episode and this happy "hello everyone!!" from brett skskksk i seriously thrive on their happiness
At 9:06, "Mason" is only showing their left hand because they only have one hand.
Vince played the violin beautifully! Wow
Incredible!
Love to Vince 🎻
0:11 you can't believe people submitted their hands? Well, you should realize that when you ask, no matter how ridiculous, your fans will support you 🥰🥰🥰
Next: guessing hands by looking at instruments
I was surprised that Brett actually remembered bassoon existed and even guessed it once lol. It would so awesome to see twoset do an episode about learning bassoon.
BROOOO IN THE MASON ONE WHEN THEY POINTED OUT THE FINGER I SAID "this smells like a saxo" AND I HAD NO IDEA I WAS RIGHT
10:58 is when gojo remembered mahoraga exists
LMAO as a flautist, I was checking my hands throughout the video and as soon as the flautist came up I did a comparison and went "yup, definitely flute!"
Do you by any chance know the peace Natasha played?? I would really like to listen to more of it
@@gabrielaalves7265 @Esra Uzuner found it, it's The Snowstorm II.Waltz from Sviridov
*Me regretting not sending photos of my hands because I'm a pianist but also have small hands*
I am so impressed by the diversity of the submissions/fans
Ive been playing cello for 5 years I absolutely love it
Tiger mum always comes out "so stupid" wahahaha Eddyyyy
I contemplated whether to submit, but I'm a bit unsecure about my playing (which sucks), and also, my right hand thumb's nail recently broke (which should be a dead giveaway). BTW, was surprised by William having a long nail on a pinky, and also having a reasonably short nail on the thumb - most classical guitarists grow themselves a monster there.
My thumb nail had also recently broke! 🤣🤷♂️ though I’ve never been one for the ‘monstrous’ long thumb myself. I clip my pinky short every once and a while, when I remember to! 😅
Love when we get to see the TwoSet community! Such a talented bunch!!!
You guys are so down to earth and humble. Always such a treat to watch your videos.
the ad for this video was for a bank- worth it for the video tho
No but as a classical guitar player, those are some of the prettiest guitar nails I’ve seen, like I’m actually jealous
8:14 "violinists calluses don't go that deep" erm brett have you seen hilary's photo of her hands?
was posted after this video was made
I have to give props to Vince for that amazing rendition of God Save the King. That piece is technically difficult for pretty much every instrument, even my instruments (euphonium and tuba)
Im also a tuba :)
As a flute player here is how you can identify one (especially a young one)
When their hands are resting, their right pinkie finger is stretched out because you can’t reach the dam key 😭
The moment I saw the harp one, I didn't even notice the fact that the pinkies didn't have calluses. I just saw the bigger callus on the left middle finger and I immediately knew
I enjoy knowing the fact that some of the submissions were rickrolls, i was waiting for this video!
Roger this roger that really went for a photoshoot
Seems like they don't have any friends who play guitar and recorder (not in the orchestra), otherwise they would know:
- How a guitarist's hands look like (most obvious hands ever)
- Recorder players are like percussionists, they play the whole range of their instrument. And trust me, long fingers are hella useful to play a bass recorder, even the tenor.
Definitely needing more guitarist friends in their life! 😅
I NEED THAT PRACTICE SHIRT NOW
6:19 I immediately recognized the harpist's calluses! *Harp gang uniiite* It's so painful when after a while whithout playing they are gone, and you must to start again with tons of string tension😭
