  • Google Earth Flyover showing the route of the 56-mile bike course of the 2017 Ironman 70.3 triathlon at Santa Cruz, California. Course consists of an out-and-back over a 28-mile route.
    The course was plotted in Google Earth and then the tour played back at a flyover speed of 200 mph and altitude of 120 ft.
    This video isn't meant to simulate the bike ride, but merely to provide an aerial view to familiarize the viewer with the terrain, roadways and turns of the course.
    Location of mile markers and turnaround point are approximations.

      No, it's not live, it's all done with Google Earth.
      Trace the path in Google Earth, following the turn-by-turn specs on the triathlon's website.
      Then adjust the Tour playback settings -- for this Bike video I used:
      Path altitude = 30m, relative to ground
      camera tilt angle = 75 degrees
      camera range = 10
      speed = 200
      3D Buildings = ON
      Play the Tour in Google Earth and use a screen capture program to capture the video, then edit in a video editing program to add title and comments.
      For Run videos I'll set a lower altitude and slower speed, but the procedure is otherwise similar.
