  • Hi guys, just a quick video discussing when to change a UV bulb and a demonstration of exactly how to do it correctly. I use an Evolution Aqua Evo55 UV clarifier for the demonstration but the method is the same for most UV clarifiers.

    When changing a UV bulb I have always worked on the principle never to touch the glass of the bulb with your fingers/hands (bare skin) as the natural oils in your skin can have an impact on the bulb. I always take steps to prevent skin to glass contact so have never had an issue therefore can't say for sure if it does make a difference but why take a chance of damaging the bulb or potentially shortening its life. Comments on this are welcome.

      Hi mate, its only halogen bulbs that you should avoid touching with bare hands. Halogen bulbs are made of a quartz type glass because they reach very very high temperatures during operation. There is a very slight risk that a fingerprint on a halogen bulb can cause the glass to heat up unevenly which will lead to different rates of expansion and cause cracking of the glass.
      There is no risk of this with a UV clarifier bulb.

      Touching these kinds of LAMP/LUMINAIRE makes no difference... Only halogen & metal halide your not supposed to touch with bear hands... I know this as I'm an electrician...

    Little surprised you didn't take the opportunity to clean the quartz tube at the same time?
    Otherwise, a useful and helpful video👍

    Hi Daz
    Yeah be extra careful with the Quartz Sleeve I learned the hard way and put a crack in mine when changing the UV bulb didn’t know until my unit stopped working I got a replacement sleeve but still didn’t work I then replaced the plugs because of water damage but still not working so I ended up having to get a new complete unit.
    But lucky it was still under warranty and the Aquatic Center I got it from replaced it.

      Ouch !! Turned out ok in the end though. I've managed to take a little chip out of one in the past but it wasn't enough to cause a problem. Its very easily done though

      Hi Terence, I'll be honest I have never heard that before. Osram are a good brand and I've used them a lot with good results but I don't believe they can outlast other brands and certainly not by twice as long.

      Sorry mate, I'm well behind with comments at the moment. Just catching up at last. I know you already know now but I add one litre of 3% HP to 1000 gallons for weed control in case anyone else was waiting for the reply 👍👍

    Hi
    I was just wondering (I know it's nothing to do with uv bulbs)if you could do a video on carp pox, I have just found it on one of my koi and I would like to learn more about it as I'm sure many others would, also do you know if it's contagious to the other koi in my pond? Any advice will be greatly appreciated
    Kind regards Ian

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 года назад

      Hi Ian, yes mate, I've added that to the list. Its not contagious , no. Your other Koi wont catch it directly and its really just a cosmetic issue . I'll definitely do that video though 👍👍

    Hi I would just like to ask, before you replace the new tube in clarifier should you remove the quartz sleeve and clean it ?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  2 года назад +1

      Hi David, I would try to have a look and see if it needs cleaning. Most times they don't get dirty so I wouldn't clean it unless you have to as I've seen so many get broken when you take them out and particularly when you try to put them back in.

    Good evening here from SA. I need some advise please. My new pond is done and running a week now. 2 returns from the 1 pump. Both returns go through is own 15W inline uv light and venturi into the pond total 30W. Question. Is there any need to run a uv light in the evenings? My pump startup in the evenings and stop in the morning. Was wondering if i rather let the air pump run and switch the uv off in the evenings to save on the life span on the lamps

    • @wernerventer4520
      @wernerventer4520 3 года назад +1

      The water pump run 24/7 its only the air pump i switch on in the evenings with a timer

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 года назад

      Hi Werner, I wouldn't recommend turning anything off at all if I'm honest. You really need everything running 24/7 365 days a year. Everything in an artificial eco system like the one we are trying to create relies on consistency. Your koi and bacteria in your filters require oxygen all round the clock at the same level. Air pumps are about more than just oxygen to, they create flow and water movement which moves waste to your pump/drain and stops stagnation. They also disrupt the water surface so predators can't see your koi and encourage activity in your fish.
      UV's also work continuously. They clear green water by forcing single cells to continuously clump together until they are big enough for your mechanical filter to take them out. If you stop this process overnight you will just reduce the efficiency of the units. If you don't need both UV's running to keep your pond clear I would suggest turning one off and keeping one going constantly instead of turning them on and off as you shorten the life of a UV bulb each time you switch it on.

      @@DazzleKoi That make all sense. I will do exacly that. Thanks for the info. I want to use a ring or something like that to keep the food in one place. Its all getting pushed down to the skimmer. I was also using more sinking food regular but would like the fish the learn to eat from my hand.They are Still abit afraid to come. But i found that when things in the pond change, like the a pump that stop and start they be come cautious

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 года назад +1

      Yes they will definitely become more comfortable with you when everything remains constant. Keep the water perfect and they will be so hungry that they over ride their inbuilt fear of humans. You cant domesticate them or tame them, only give them conditions so perfect that their appetite is big enough to throw caution to the wind and come to you for food.
      You can make a feeding ring using 4 elbows and 4 x 2 ft lengths of pipe. Floating food is definitely better as it means you can check them over and also see if one or more are off their food 👍👍👍

    My koi dealer told me Osram bulbs would last 2 seasons ! Is he telling me porky pies?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 года назад +1

      Hi Terence, Osram are a good brand and I've used them a lot with good results but I've never seen any evidence to suggest they last longer than other makes. I think that may be a bit of sales patter but I'd love to be proved wrong.
