A blind lady and her guide dog were regulars at a cafe where I worked. One time they came in, and she stood in the door and asked, "Where am I?" When we told her, she laughed. Said it had been a long day and her dog was tired, so brought her into the cafe so they could have a break!
That's really cool of the dog to bring her into a place that she knows they can both take a break from there hard day

I used to work with a lady and her guide dog. I always knew the dog was working when the harness was on, and when not, she was able to pet if asked.

I have a mobility dog, and my dad gave us the biggest compliment when he said that Kennedy was a totally different dog when I put on his vest ! I owner train and I was so proud! y'all are an amazing team!

It’s so smart that he hugs the buildings, cuz then you don’t have to worry about running into poles and trees and such.
Sure other people have to move and walk around you, but other people can see, so that’s easy for them :)

Something about the fact that a dog can be so smart as to know they are allowed to disobey if it’s for the sake of your safety, makes my heart swell so much I get tears in my eyes! I love dogs so much! Such big hearted and intelligent animals!
It’s called obedient disobedience. The dog isn’t willing to put itself in danger either and the blind person’s other senses aren’t 100% on it. I learned that from Molly Burke

My aunt had a dog that was just a lap dog, not trained for anything special but was such a good boy.
Well he started doing this weird thing where he would smell her armpit and bark at her. So of course we laughed like he’s telling her she smells bad.
Well just by happenstance she had her yearly mammogram a month later, they found a very small lump under that armpit basically in her breast tissue.
She got the lump removed and he smelled there a few more times but then quit doing it and he never barked at her again
He was telling her “mom something is up w you” he was that smart and we were too stupid to understand!
So yeah, dogs are freaking amazing! Rest is pup paradise Opie❤
I presume Mr. Maple is a Golden Retriever. They're exceptionally smart dogs. I kinda was wondering about it after watching, they rank number four in intelligent dog breeds. Mr. Maple knows his job, and does it well. He's such a good boy.

And helpful!! I trained my own service dog, and it took a lot to get him to continue to follow my lead through doors instead of running in, because they've closed on him before and are generally scary! That said, it would be awful to have an accident because of said training and hinges are definitely something I never thought to consider!
I hate being on a bus and the only seats are beside the door. There's a glass plate kn front of those seats but the gap at the side is usually big enough for a tail to just her slip through unintentionally and get trapped in the shutting door 😭😭😭
I work with a guide dog every day, and it’s always amazing to see the change to “work mode” the moment the harness is on. One moment she’s a silly, sweet, fairly typical Golden Retriever, and the next, she’s serious and focused and all about work.

My Dad was totally blind he never had a guide dog. But one time a dog came to our house ,and Dad let us keep him, until owner is found. Anyway the dog ended up being a guide dog , the very first time my dad was going to walk into something the dog jumped in front of him. She was a great dog. She looked just like your dog maple. The dog was only a few months old when it came to us and it had a kitten in its mouth that was about 4weeks old they would do everything together even when he took Dad for a walk.

I was a puppy raiser for a guide dog organization my senior year of high school so I know all about the training and selective disobedience and it's still amazing to me how incredibly intelligent these dogs are.

When Maple stopped before the gravel, it was so subtle that I would've kept my stride as a seeing person even. But you caught onto it mediately. Really interesting! He's a good boi ❤

My service dogs are multi-purpose, but are trained in guidework as part of their tasks because I disassociate and need it. My dogs are taught the route to safe spaces like a coffee shop and a Walgreens, and know how to get there with very little input in cases where I am not *there* to tell them what to do. They know to only cross if other people are crossing the street, and to wait until they see another person crossing.
It's a very important and scary thing to need, but it's probably saved my life. And it's much more work to train than standard guide work. But the base to it is very similar.
My kids and I had the honor of raising a guide dog pup for her first year and we taught her "find a cop" and "find coffee" (as in coffee shop or coffee stand, and we chose that because of the strong scent) - that way if her new person ever got lost, she could find help without them having to wander aimlessly hoping someone would notice.
Maple is absolutely adorable and obviously loves his job very much! ❤
How did the dog know who was a cop?
@@juliusroman8616I would assume they would teach the dog to find someone in uniform. Don't know if they would still be able to find a cop if they went to a place with a different cop/sheriff uniform though.

I think most police uniforms are similar their going to have the gear , belt radio etc so together should help them Differentiate between them @abigailstasiewicz8034
@@juliusroman8616 Animals often use specific combinations of scents to identify things or locations. A dog could come to learn "find a cop" just by the combination of scents that a standard police person would smell of. Gun powder from their weapon, capsaicin of the pepper spray they carry, the rubbery scent of the latex gloves used for searches, plus all the other various gear they carry. Every police officer is a different person with a unique scent, but they all walk around with the same standard set of items that make a unique combination that the dog can learn to recognize. It's not much different from teaching them to find drugs, bombs, allergens, low blood sugar, etc. A specific scent is given a name to identify it to them, and you give them the command to find that.
I’m not sure with whom I’m most impressed! Paul walking confidently, Mr Maple being so cute AND clever or Matthew, apparently filming whilst walking backwards!! 😄 LOVE the shirts in the talking heads section.

Wow, I've always been worried about calling myself blind when I'm legally blind. I joke around a lot with friends when they mention blindness, but I sometimes do that just to remind myself that its not everyones experience to see things like I do. I worry sometimes about going completely blind because I'm only 23 right now and I know my vision will deteriorate as I age, but your sunny disposition makes me feel so much better about it.
Obedient disobedience in guide dogs blows my mind, it is truly astounding. Big respect for the guide dogs and ofcourse their trainers, amazing work!

I really like that you mention that they DO make mistakes. Alot of people expect service dogs (of all kinds) to be perfect and that's not true. Especially for those of us who've had to train them ourselves and end up making mistakes and learning from them.

I’ve grown up with my dad having guide dogs, so it’s not that fascinating to me when I meet someone with a service dog in public. I wasn’t that kid who would run up to someone with a service dog and fan girl all over them, I was the kid who would tell other kids that my dads guide dog is working and not to pet him. I would always get these disgusted looks from the weirdest of children 😂

Some kids genuinely don’t know or understand that.
Education is key because unfortunately there is still a lot of ignorance around blind and visually impaired and the guide dogs and canes ❤
I used to raise guide dog puppies. Seeing what they do when fully trained is interesting. My job was to make them comfortable everywhere. Like I’ve taken my brand new pup on the bus the day after getting them. I would carry the little one , mind you, but they were on the bus from day one. I had to teach them where they were allowed to pee, to pee on concrete if there’s no grass around, basic commands, to walk on grates and many other kinds of surfaces without discomfort. I taught some to find the subway, find my keys. I had to teach them not to chase common small creatures like squirrels, raccoons and cats. Stuff like that.

It was so cool to see Maple correct himself at the crosswalk where he took Paul to the edge. The crosswalk stripes were to your left, so when Maple got into the street, he took himself and Paul over to the stripes. Awesome work, Maple!

A young friend of mine who I know from playing video games told me about you. I have a little bit more vision than you, but am on a wait list for a guide dog. I think this video is really great. I do everything I can to explain things to people so that they understand. I live in France though, and people don't seem to be as understanding when they see someone coming towards them with a white cane.
I must admit, Maple got me hooked on your channel but your personalities keep me coming back!

As a volunteer puppy raiser for a large organization on the east coast, this was a pleasure to watch! We don't always get to follow them/their lives after they've been matched to their handler and graduated, despite caring for them and teaching them their basic commands from between 8 weeks to ~16 months (or so) of age. 🥰 Y'all are obviously lovely people and Maple is in good hands!
I've heard soooo many people say that quide dogs are miserable and don't like what they're doing... not in Maples case. His tail was nonstop wagging. You can tell he really likes his route
These people don't know or understand dogs. You could never force a dog do this level of work non consensually. Dogs that don't consent, have the drive or ability, don't make the cut. Maple is doing this because he's excellent and gets reinforcement for it too.

Also I'm not very well learned on Maple's breed and if there are any common factors in what they enjoy but a lot of dogs have the kind of "work" they like to do literally built into their genetics; sheepdogs are a great example because even when just kept as pets instead of farmdogs they are CONSTANTLY trying to herd people and animals and for the most part they seem to love it! Anyone who disses Paul for having Maple as a guide dog has clearly never had a dog because it's easy to tell when they're happy or miserable; they aren't like cats always trying to hide their pain lol all the dogs I've met are dramatic af, if they don't like something that's going on they will let you know very vocally (I'm sure there are dogs that don't adhere to this; just my own experience)
Most animals are happier if they have jobs. In my house, even the cockatiels had jobs.
I've seen retired working dogs actually get depressed bc they're no longer working. They like having a routine and job!

I feel like living in the city might make it easier to live independently as a blind person. Lots of public transportation and streets to walk. Maple is so great. Super focused on his job while in the busy city. He deserves all his love and treats
It’s so interesting to see how focused Mr Maple is when he has his harness on. As someone who isn’t familiar whatsoever with service dogs, it’s incredible to see how smart they are and how much they can help someone on day to day tasks
You can only imagine the trust that blind people have in their dog to not lead them out into traffic or put their life in danger, the confidence and bravery that it must take to go out on your own as a blind person is just staggering. Seeing the guide dog in action, you can absolutely understand the years and hundreds of hours of training that go into a working dog like that, and why they cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Mr Maple is Paul's first guide dog -- and the answer is "yes!" Depending on your lifestyle, location, etc... guide dogs can get all sorts of specific customization. Although the "basics" are all the same. Great question!

I then saw you posted this video! Perfect timing. It's amazing to watch guide dogs at work. Maple is SO smart and super adorable! He doesn't like other dogs, but how does he react to cats, birds & squirrels? Please do more videos like this. First of all, you both are wonderful together! Maple is so smart and lovely. Learning about how the guide dog guides was fascinating. I have always wondered how the guide dogs do their work. I have to give kudos to the person who trained Maple
in the first place. Their year or so training that beautiful dog and then to give him back to the organization (I live in Canada so I don’t know what the term is in the States) must have been difficult. Because let’s face it, they form a bond and it must be tough to give the dog up. Thank you for sharing this walk with us.

After meeting a blind friend a couple of years ago who prefers to be led by a sighted guide as opposed to using a cane or guide dog, whenever we go out, I think a *lot* more about accessibility + how to describe the terrain we're on in helpful ways. It is astounding to me how talented Maple is at making judgment calls and balancing so many logistical challenges at the same time when he's guiding! Have you all ever made a podcast or video about what it was like for Paul to learn how to work as a part of a guide-dog team? I would be really interested to learn more about what your training was like. Thanks for another great video!

If they aren't removeable, then please know there is so so much that you will still be able to do and enjoy. I've found the transistion the hardest, but 7 years in, its just ordinary life, and I am very happy and able to do so so many things

I am 58 years old. I have, working in the CBD (Perth, Western Australia), many, many times, seen visually impaired people, and those with service dogs, and I've leapt in to "help" them, and been politely refused. That has been because I have never understood the training these dogs and their "hoomans" go through, that they work in such unison that the appropriate response is, perhaps, to say "Hi, my name is Kerri, if you would like assistance, I'm here but otherwise have a super day!" -

I love the way you two talk about Maple and treat him. I've only watched a woman with POTS on youtube who treats her dog like an object she resents having instead of a living being. It's really refreshing to see you be so loving and caring towards Maple and appreciate the job he's doing for you.

We trained for 2 weeks in Oregon and during that time I really learned how to trust him fully! It wasn't easy on Day One -- but by the end of the first week I was "all in" with Mr Maple
When Maple served, he changed to a professional guide dog!

I have a guide dog! We graduated this past July together and I live her with all my heart ❤❤❤ and they are VERY smart. Sometimes too smart lol she tries to figure out ways to get treats from me

Fascinating, lovely partnership. I have wanted to foster a guide dog for training but my family is reluctant to say goodbye but seeing who it benefits is inspiring.
This is so fascinating! I’m a dog owner, so I know dogs are smart (even though mine to stubborn to do commands), but guiding dogs are incredible! I think I never saw one in my whole life (which is say something about my country), but wow the way Maple stops and check Paul every time there is a curb in front!

Our family has raised 5 Guide Dogs for the Blind. I can tell you that if the dogs are not happy in their work, they never graduate and do not go on to become a Guide. These dogs love doing what they do. It was an extremely rewarding time in our life, teaching the puppies all they needed to know before Guide School....manners, basic obedience , relieving on leash and on command, how to behave in a restaurant, grocery store and my daughter took her dog to high school once a week and he laid at her feet during class. Giving up the dogs at about 18 months was heart crushing. We cried for weeks after each one. Great to see this team working so well together!

I love your video. I too have a guide dog named Glenna who is 6yrs and we have been partners for 4. She is an amazing guide dog also and I use all the commands that you do plus a couple more from past sighted years of training obedience. The only difference I never take her lead off when in any type of eating establishment nor do I feed her anything. She knows that if she is good she will get it once we leave and are outside. No matter where we are I can ask Glenna for a ladies room and she will always find one. We also cruise and once she is walked around the ship, she remembers and will take me where ever I ask. She like your Mr. Maple is fantastic and gives us so much freedom (besides the love and companionship)

This video was truly fascinating! I mean, I already had high esteem for dogs, but the subtleties of what guide dogs can do is just amazing.
Matthew is much more relaxed for this video, he isn't so focused on the camera lens and afraid to look at the person he is having a conversation with. Keep it up, Matthew and Paul and Maple.
