I once went to a wedding where one of the guest’s was blind and had a guide dog. Dog acted EXACTLY like Mr. Maple in and out of the harness. In the harness, 100% business (although I noticed him side eyeing the steak the waiters brought out), and made himself discreet by hiding under the table while his handler ate. There was a big open field at the country club where the reception was with a seating area outdoors. She (the handler) went outside with the rest of us, sat in a chair with a glass of wine, and released him from the harness. And he immediately ran towards the kids playing tag, wanting to meet everyone, play with them, just be absolutely adorable. When it was time to go, she called his name, he spent maybe 10 seconds letting himself get pet goodbye, then walked back and got back in his harness and was back to work.
Back when I was in college, I knew a girl who was totally blind, and had a guide dog. I was genuinely curious about whether or not the dog, a very adorable golden retriever, knew the difference between working or not, so she demonstrated, and that cute little golden boi immediately laid on the floor and asked for a belly rub. Of course I obliged. I got to pet him for around two minutes, then it was back to work, and the change from not working, to working, was instant. Golden retrievers are such great dogs.
When my daughter was young, we were walking through a mall with my aunt. My daughter excitedly says "oh look! A dog! " It was a service dog, and I doubted my aunt knew not pet it, so I said to my daughter "see the harness? He's working, so we won't disturb him". My kid is like "I know" and my aunt is like "wow, I didn't know that". The lady heard and came over, and explained that the dog is off duty when it's harness is off, and took it off so we all got to pet the dog. It was a great learning opportunity. It was so sweet of the lady to do that. Obviously, I would never expect that, and would never ask to pet a service dog. Not everyone wants to talk to a child or anyone for that matter, and I'm sure this lady didn't have time to do that every time someone saw the dog.
Just wanted to say, I'm autistic and I have a special love of dogs - thank you so much for doing these videos about Mr. Maple, they bring me SUCH JOY! He's the best boy. Big love from the UK! x
I'm not certain how the ADA compatible association works in the UK, but in the US, it is possible for folks with autism to get a dog as a support animal. Maybe you can look into that! Dogs are great for helping people fell more calm, diminish anxiety, and much, much more.
@@amyralls6218To be allowed the access of a guide dog/service animal the dog has to fulfill a specific function for the handler that the handler cannot do for themselves. There are legally-protected psychiatric service animals but they are not emotional support animals, which do not have legal protections in the US. PSAs can recognize and alert the handler to early escalation of emotions before undesired behaviors occur for example. If the autism is accompanied by emotional dysregulation, a seizure disorder, or certain cardiac issues, the person might benefit from a service animal. Certain diabetic people also might benefit from a hypoglycemia alert dog. But we don’t need more ESAs making life difficult for people with functional limitations who require a service dog. Imagine literally relying on your animal to save your life but instead having an untrained dog distract and threaten your “life-line”.
same here, im autistic and aim actually on a waiting list to get a assistant dog for myself. It was highly recomended for me when those i know saw how much better i was around dogs.
Mr. Maple has the most wonderful life. He gets to work and feel purposeful. He is cared for so meticulously. He gets to have fun and be a doggo. He lives in a beautiful safe apartment. But, best of all he has Paul and Matthew. I loved EVERYTHING about this video. Thank you so much for sharing it. 😊❤
Mr. Maple = on duty Maple = off duty Normally when Maple is off duty, he always looks so energetic and joyful. However, when he's being groomed by Paul, he's so calm and patient. Great boy!!!! ❤❤❤
As a previous vet tech your grooming bin gave me so much joy 🥰 I love that you treat Mr Maple with love and respect and show him the care that he shows you, caring for his physical, emotional and psychological needs ❤️ i wish all dog owners were as attentive as you
Hi. We were lucky enough to acquire a retired guide dog. He took early retirement at age six. He was the best dog, friend and companion we have ever had. A very interesting and rewarding time with that boy.
I love seeing this. My parents and I helped train and socialise guide dog puppies (their first year is socialising and basic training from volunteers that have the pups for about a year, then they go into kennels for more in depth training with guide dogs). Only one of our 6 failed, as she had multiple ear infections during her training. She went through everything but had to be pulled out because of that and having skin irritation flare ups. We kept that one, but it’s lovely to see the other side when they are with their blind owners. It was so hard to give the puppies back but seeing this makes the heartache worthwhile. two others went to be brood bitches, and the other 3 girls passed with flying colours.
As an occupational therapist, I've been fascinated by how Mr. Maple always seems to have something in his mouth. Some of my sensory kiddos do the same thing to help calm themselves.
I think it has to do with the breed aswell; retrievers are known to carry things around in their mouth when they're happy. My golden would do the same thing 🐶
@@MatthewandPaulOfficial You're _all_ stars of your channel and it's wonderful how healthy your family dynamics are, with no one needing to grab all attention. Love you all! ❤️
Thanks guys! This is such a wonderful and informative little video of some of Mr Maple’s home life and care. 👏 Those close-ups of his adorable boopable nose are the cutest too! 🥰 Love how your home is always so full of love and fun and kibble! ❤️ 🦮
Currently im a volunteer for a foundation for guide dogs and assistance for kids with ASD. And I can confirm that they know when they’re working or not, they are a whole different dogs with their “Uniform”. Of course there are some things that they can’t do but just as Paul say they are just like another puppy. And I’m pretty sure that one of the reasons and its a really important thing is that we as volunteers we treat them in a kinda different way when they are working or not, and the world around does to. I mean that they know that with them uniform other people cannot touch or distract them but when he is not working, this can be done. (For those who might not know, the first year it called Socialize, and its period of time of 12/15 months when the dogs go everywhere to get use to and once they go to their future user can be comfortable with the environment that is surrounds them.) Sometimes we have dogs exchanges so they can adapt to new routines. For example im a med student and I go to the gym but I don’t work, in the next exchange it’s probable that “my dog” goes to a volunteer that has an office job.l
I’ve always said if we could speak dog, we’d better to each other. It doesn’t take long to understand what they want, feel, happy or sad. Love you guys. But Mr. Maple is the star of the show (today).
I really like the way you read Maples energy before the ear clean and how you took time to calm him down first and didn't rush right in just to get it done. You are awesome, and I love they way you two are partners and take care of each other. I also love your relationship with Matthew, what a beautiful family. Makes my heart sing to watch you. You don't need to see to feel the love between all three of you.
Mr Maple you're such a smart boy! My Golden service dog always had to grab something as well but he always added an excited grumble, does Maple do that ever? Love your videos, can't wait for the next one! ❤😊🐶

I'm a new subscriber, I really love the positivity Paul gives and still share the emotions when he is having a difficult day. I have RP as well, I'm 36 but mine is very slow progression, I'm about 50% far into it, goes to show that for every RP person, the progression of the deterioration varies person to person. I'm also deaf from birth, so it is very scary to think about the future when my eyes worsen I won't have any hearing to help me get around but seeing Paul this positive and smiley, gives me hope. I'm loving this channel, thank you Matthew, Paul and Mr Maple for your contents to bring joy to us all, as well as raising awareness of RP, I feel like it is very under-awared around the world, so what you are doing is very important too. I hope yall stay authentic, humble, and loveble. I hope and pray nothing but the best for yall! Thanks for sharing a piece of your lives with us! Nothing but positive vibes! You’re such a wonderful loving companion for your pup ❤ I have to do the nail clipping ( not a working pup) because he’s a Pyrenees and not many vets understand they have different claws and the clipper is stainless steel along with a drummer. They’re like bear claws. lol. But he was a high risk very sick rescue, it took me the first year of patience and slow going to be able to do his nails and learn how to. Some days it was only one claw and tons of treats.
One thing I don't understand, since I had Labradors for 20 years: How on earth is your house so immaculate!! You always walking around barefoot and rugs and couch.... all so clean 🤷♀
This is such an encouraging and uplifting video. Whenever I see working dogs, they usually appear to be depressed as if they never go off duty. I am hope more dogs are 'allowed' ie encouraged to have some playful fun as your gorgeous dog does.
LOVE seeing your longer form vids about life as someone with accessibility needs. I'm not disabled, but I like to learn about the different tools that are out there because I never know when I'll need to know it. Plus, I love seeing other people in the LGBT community just living their lives.
Thanks for sharing these details with us! You might think that it is “normal” but I find it fascinating and I love learning more about your ordinary life! Support from Sweden 🇸🇪
Thank you for this video, Matthew and Paul. Paul is anazing and Mr. Maple is amazing. .aple is a blessing. I don't know what you will do without Maple. Many blessings to you guys.
When my service dog is off duty, he goes into security mode. He is not trained as a guard dog only as a good boy & service dog. He's also very goofy & judgemental. I absolutely love you two! Y'all make me smile & laugh every time I watch a video even if I've watched it before!
I love watching your videos, there very informative to a sighted person. I have a dog too, a Spanish bread called a podenco and she is my life. I would do anything for her. Keep posting videos of your fantastic mr maple and keep pranking Paul!!!! Lol😊
No, you guys are so kind to respect and treat Maple better than a family member, it just warms my heart. I live in NYC and often see a working dog with his owner take him to work early and back on the subway around 5:30. The dog just looks so exhausted and I always hope he's given some happiness like what I just witnessed on your video. Thank you so much for the experience. Out of curiosity, does anyone from the dog associations for the blind ever do a wellness check on the dogs?
I love your content and I love both of your energy! I first saw you on Instagram, then I started watching your RUclips videos and now I'm binging your His & His podcast. I lived in Washington for 23 years before moving to South Dakota in 2020. I also have a female mini Australian shepherd named Maple. I would love to hear Matthew's thoughts about Jill Duggar's book about her experience with IBLP teachings.
I’m a new subscriber, you’re such a cute couple. I have a question. Does Paul prefer for people to see his disability when you’re out, so that people can be more accommodating, or does he like to blend in and go incognito?
Paul here to answer this one! I prefer that people can see it. I will sometimes use my white cane for something very simple like walking from my chair at Starbucks to the counter with the napkins which might be just 2 feet away.... in those cases I don't actually NEED the cane for that distance, but I use it as a signal to others that I am visually impaired. That way, if I get to the counter and can't find the napkins RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME (which is often the case), someone is more likely to help me. So that's one example of how using a white cane is helpful in unexpected ways!
I have a male Tonkinese cat who suffers from conjunctivitis because he had cat flu as a kitten and has to regularly have ointment put in his eyes or gunk wiped off his face and I wish he was as good as Maple, no matter how sneaky I am at getting the ointment and hiding it in my hand or pocket, he somehow knows and runs, or when he sees me get a piece of paper towel to wipe his face, he runs! It's always obvious that he feels better after a clean up or having the ointment clear his eyes, but the little Bugger doesn't like to admit it! He's 14 years old now, you'd think he'd be used to it!? P.S. I love you guys, keep the videos coming! All the best from Australia!
I just realized, thanks to getting rewards for doing their job and that job taking them outside the house and into the regular day, working dogs get more treats than normal dogs do, it’s so funny. I probably shouldn’t be watching this while I eat and dogsit since you say the word “treat” so often, my aunt’s dog can hear you and she wants her treat lol.
No entanglement is ever wanted, but if a puppy does get entangled, let it be something bright and colorful so that the team can easily spot it. (Anyone know if fur seals are colorblind?) Well done Hawain and Antoine for always looking out for your puppies! 🦭🌊💙
You guys are just too adorable...oh, yeah, and Maple, too!! I love the ball puzzle toy you have for Maple! I have a toy poodle that has serious separation anxiety. I'm home the majority of the time, but when I do need to leave her home alone, I put treats in toys and leave them around the house for her. Some puzzle toys she just doesn't really like. Right now, all the toys I use are Hide-a-treat style toys. They are soft toys that have parts that she can remove in order to get the treats. Several of the toys, she likes to roll around to get the treats out, so I'm thinking she may enjoy a toy like the one you gave Maple during this video! I would love to know where you found that ball! It may be a bit too big for my 9 pound dog, but a smaller size could be perfect for her!!
My service dog is the opposite. Shes on duty inside the home, never fully relaxed, As soon as shes off lead outside shes off, on happy time off break mode. Hearing dogs need to have 1 hour minimum of off-lead play a day.
Thank you for showing you brushing your dog's teeth! I didn't realize how important that was til I took my cat to the vet and they found some bad cavities 😢
I love that Mr Maple regulates his emotions better than most human adults do lol
FOR REAL
Absolutely.
And many humans have the arrogance to believe that we're superior to other animals. 🙃
Maple has been trained to behave well.
Most humans have not.
@@bcaye that is very true, my statement still stands
That's bc he has been trained by humans that can control their own emotions

Ik yall read/see/hear this all the time but I absolutely love yall. Yall really make me smile. I just now caught myself and had been smiling since the beginning of the video.
I hope yall stay authentic, humble, and loveble. I hope and pray nothing but the best for yall! Thanks for sharing a piece of your lives with us! Nothing but positive vibes! You guys are truly awesome! Mr maple included 😊😊😊
This was the best to watch. 😅 I miss my labs and Mr. Maple is such a cutie. I love the tails wags and lickies while you brushed his fur ❤
You’re such a wonderful loving companion for your pup ❤
I have to do the nail clipping ( not a working pup) because he’s a Pyrenees and not many vets understand they have different claws and the clipper is stainless steel along with a drummer. They’re like bear claws. lol. But he was a high risk very sick rescue, it took me the first year of patience and slow going to be able to do his nails and learn how to. Some days it was only one claw and tons of treats.
Mr. Maple is such a wonderful poopers!! With wonderful daddies!
One thing I don't understand, since I had Labradors for 20 years: How on earth is your house so immaculate!! You always walking around barefoot and rugs and couch.... all so clean 🤷♀
Your content is such a rain of sunshine in my life, thank you for sharing those small moments of joy
❤we love you guys and Mr. Maple so so much. Thank you for such heart warming, funny videos
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@MatthewandPaulOfficial ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Mr Maple is such a sweetheart ❤
I love that after his work harness comes off, you reward his work and give him that energy outlet with that playtime!
He is f'ing adorable. Can you take him to a pet store and let him pick out a toy...he was so good for you in the video.
Good Boi! I’m so glad you mentioned heart worm prevention and ear cleaning! Good Boys!
Mr. Maple is so cute and so patient!
Excellent information Paul and Matthew. Even though my dog is just a pet, some of it helped me understand some things that he did. Thanks a lot!!!❤
Thank you for this video, Matthew and Paul. Paul is anazing and Mr. Maple is amazing. .aple is a blessing. I don't know what you will do without Maple. Many blessings to you guys.
Our pleasure!
Maple reminds me of my friend’s service dog! Labs are so smart and patient!
i just saw one of your reels and from then on you THREE got me..watching from dubai..
Lol😊
Mr Mapple is such a good floofer ❤❤❤❤
Very nice,i really liked this video Mr. Maple is one super awesome ❤dog😊😊😊
Thank you for educating me on how these guide dogs also have fun, it made me very happy. I always felt so sorry for working dogs.
You are so kind
No, you guys are so kind to respect and treat Maple better than a family member, it just warms my heart. I live in NYC and often see a working dog with his owner take him to work early and back on the subway around 5:30. The dog just looks so exhausted and I always hope he's given some happiness like what I just witnessed on your video. Thank you so much for the experience. Out of curiosity, does anyone from the dog associations for the blind ever do a wellness check on the dogs?
Great video lads. Loved it thank you for sharing your routine with Mr Maple with us xx
What happens is Matthew tries to prank Mr Maple instead 😂 and plays with him which is the cutest
This video was actually kinda helpful. My dogs teeth need to be brushed, but I wasn't sure how to do it. So, thank you for demonstrating it!
Dogs love playing " Tug of War ..
Its funny to see how powerful dogs are !
He’s such a smart cutie pie❤
We use that exact toothpaste for our cat! We swapped out the brush for one of those finger ones. But he LOVES that toothpaste so much.
You both always have perfect hair. Love y’all
Mr maple is such a sweet boy 😊
Me encantan sus videos. Además de mostrar la vida diaria, nos enseñan como reconocer patrones y como cuidar de su perro guia.
Muchas gracias.
😂😂😂 both my daughter and me hate socks and don’t really like shoes either so it’s sandals or “barefoot” shoes
Mr maple is so adorable
Barefoot shoes rule!! Everyone should be wearing them, regular shoes are like foot binding torture
Just found your videos and i love them and funny a well..🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤
Welcome!!
🦭🌊💙
Wonderful video loved every second of this 👏❤️🙏
You guys are just too adorable...oh, yeah, and Maple, too!!
I love this. Everytime I watch one of your videos I play with my dog with more dedication
Maple is such a happy boy! Glad he gets to be like all other dogs! Just wondering is he ever mischievous?
2:03 I disagree. Let those feet out!
Would love to see Mr Maple Zoomies❤
My service dog is the opposite.
Shes on duty inside the home, never fully relaxed, As soon as shes off lead outside shes off, on happy time off break mode. Hearing dogs need to have 1 hour minimum of off-lead play a day.
Thank you for showing you brushing your dog's teeth! I didn't realize how important that was til I took my cat to the vet and they found some bad cavities 😢
Your latest vlog was soooo heartwarming and cute with Mr Maple he is such a gorges dog 🐶
Beautiful pup🎉
