  • This webinar will assess the opportunities and impacts of hydrogen production from coal with CCUS in the energy transition. Developing a hydrogen economy is widely considered to be an important part of the response to climate change. It requires a rapid kick-start of large-scale low-carbon hydrogen production. In 2017, Japan became the first country to adopt a national hydrogen framework when it issued the Basic Hydrogen Strategy. More countries have followed. As a result, several sectors plan to use large amounts of hydrogen as part of their efforts to reach NZE, including power generation, transport and steel production. This information will be brought together to review the expected demand for hydrogen and then to assess how this demand can be met, up to 2050. The environmental impacts of hydrogen production by the different methods will be covered including water consumption and CO2 emissions. Various reports indicate that by combining coal gasification with CCUS, low-carbon hydrogen can be produced from coal at a competitive price. This is important for countries such as China and India that depend heavily on coal.
