The PGA TOUR returns to iconic Riviera Country Club for The Genesis Invitational. Tournament host Tiger Woods will be in attendance but won’t play as he is still recovering from a back procedure last month. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson and defending champion Adam Scott are among the headliners. Notables in the invitation-only field include major champions Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Francesco Molinari, plus world No. 2 Jon Rahm. Two-time FedExCup winner Rory McIlroy looks to finally lift the trophy at Riviera after holding a piece of the lead Sunday a year ago only to fall to T5. In addition to reigning champ Johnson, FedExCup winners in the field include Justin Thomas, Brandt Snedeker, and Jim Furyk.

The club length is possibly to get as far away as possible from the soft ground where the ball plugged. This ruling would be really useful on on soggy courses with bad drainage.

  • @TheBot9th

Fantastic job by the PGA Official, Tom Hearn, to expidite this potentially challenging ruling, explaining the intricacies presented in that this course has a type of grass called Kikuya on everything but their greens. If you look at a cross section of this grass, it almost grows like a tree. There is often a series of “branches” (sort of like stems) between the ground and the top of the grass blades. On the bunker faces, there is sometimes 2-3 inches of these stems before you actually get down to the ground. In these areas, balls can easily appear to be embedded in the ground when they really aren’t. For a player to get free relief for an embedded ball, the ball actually has to break the surface of the ground and not merely break the surface of the top of the grass. We’ve had players have such a bad lie that they have had to take penalty relief for an unplayable lie (not a fun ruling!). Luckily for this guy, the ball was just high enough on the bunker face that the grass was very closely mown and there wasn’t much space between the top of the grass and the actual ground.
AND luckily, the player had one of the best officials on the tour to who understood how this specific type grass can make a call like this as interesting a call as one could have. Great wisdom & discernment, Mr. Hearn.
