MANNN. I was just looking into books and such to get my small tire game on point with this new race car im building. Literally every question I have you end up doing a video on lol. Good stuff!
Great video John. I'm building a car with a stock 4.8, 93 octane, NON intercooled and Meth injection. Totally different than what you discuss in this video but it's always good knowledge to have. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Thanks John just got a fresh solid roller 406 for the 64 Nova not this Saturday because of my wedding but the next I am trying to get a pass in I tried to run methanal just didn't work out for me verses race gas but I do love the pump you have 👍 Thanks for the video best of luck .
YESSSS, Johnny Boy!!!!! Another *A+* Banger Video! Everytime I am watching your vids and the wife starts to tall shit or whatever, I ALWAYS say "baby, shhhhhh, I am at school right now" You ARE the *BEST* J.Phillips!!!!!!!
Good video John. I run methanol on my combination. It has a very tolerable resistance to detonation as well. I don't know what your egts are but most people say they don't go above 1200 degrees.
Had funny car shut down at Pomona winter nationals years ago.. went running up to car with shorts on,with fuel line wrench. Lost all my leg hair. Long trailer trip loosened AN fittings. Methanol fire only has faint blue flickers in low light. I ran thru burning methanol in full sun, never even saw it till my legs caught fire
Another great video I like it when I learn new things I never thought about it being possible to have a fuel pump to big because the regulator can t return it quick enough.
I’ve never saw a precision injector break. I have personally had two billet atoms fail and one right back after I got it. My buddy had one break. I’d take the precision’s. They don’t look cool but they work well. So do Holley.
Those are the best injectors hands down at least precision injectors ain’t hanging open like a atomizer or others I’ve seen I’ve had mine for 3 years now and no problems and yes I run methanol.
I remember an Indy race I was at years ago a car caught fire and all you could see was the heat waves coming off it, my wife asked why they spraying that car down it did not wreck, just caught fire after coming out of the pits.
just curious john what engine you run ? you run a big block chevy or small block ? also what engine managment system you run looking at setting a a complete new system right now i am on a big block ford but. parts are hard to find and cannot find blocks. so i am stuck at 1000hp and want to move up into the turbo realm . what size of a turbo you run? thanks
What was your problems with running a blow through carb setup? Was it due to the power level? Reason I ask is a friend of mine has slowly been gathering up parts to put a turbo on his 69 camaro and he has a blow through carb and plans on using that. His motor right now is 383 with 630hp N/A at the crank so realistically it will be about 900hp with the turbo. And hear her honest opinion what do you think of using a blow through at this power level? What are some of the troubles you encountered? Thanks again for a great videos I really enjoyed them.
I went 4.90’s at 3000lbs with the carb, but I had to supplement fuel through a spray bar. But I did have a home built carb, so brpv’s were not in mine. I found a guy that wanted out of fuel injection, do I traded him all my msd power grid stuff. The thing that really pushed me to do fuel injection, was the inability to read a/f ratio. The only independent wideband i could find to read methanol was 700 bucks! I was pulling all the plugs every pass got tune up changes, it was tough! love fuel injection now! I had the red aeromotive belt drive pump, overdriven it will pump about 6-7gpm. For blow thru methanol, You for sure need dual needles and seat bowls with .150 needle and seats. But gong the methanol wideband May still be an issue. When you price out everything, Holley hp with ntk sensor is not much more! IMO
Do you pickle the motor after race day in any way to protect parts from the methanol? Blow it out? Run gas through it? Know blown alcohol guys that will spray wd40 through the lines and blower and blow it out...
We run top lube in the fuel, but most of the time that’s it. I do cap the vent on the fuel tank to try and keep moisture and air out. Don’t usually have any issues, bit I think it depends on the components. Most recommend to get the fuel out and run gas. I feel that most corrosion comes after the methanol is removed and air/moisture contacts that area. Cylinder walls definitely show evidence of slight rust after a while. I did create a new tune for gas to flush system if car is gonna sit for weeks, but have not come up with an easy way to get all the gas out the fuel system when going back to alcohol after it sits. So I have not done it yet.
A good source for methanol parts is Good Vibes Racing over on the west coast. Great tech advice and they do good work, too. As for the fires, be extra careful: I popped my burst plate on launch and it took out one of my lines, causing a fire. A track guy (yeah, he was new) got right up on my hood to spray through the hole around the blower and singed his eyebrows off because he didn't notice the clear flames. Be safe! Oh, and the downsides I don't like with methanol: all the darned oil changes, having to clean the fuel system on a fairly regular basis (it's humid here in the mid-Atlantic), and how much raw fuel volume you go through.
Not to sound like a no it all or anything like that. You should really run your -10 feed to a Y duel -8 and feed both rails Come out the other side of the rails and run 2 -8’s to both sides of the regulator and a -8 out the bottom. At the power level your at it definitely makes a difference from cylinder to cylinder consistency. We tested on the dyno with EGT’s in every primary and seen a dramatic difference with cars making over 1000hp. Under that it wasn’t a real need to. But with the higher HP numbers it made each cylinder have more consistent temps across the board. Just a suggestion from one racer to the next. Don’t wanna sound like a douch or anything. Lol. Just my findings over the years testing on the dyno
On cars 1200hp and up we noticed a 15-25hp gain and really even egt’s Compared to running it in a loop. We started doing all our turbo cars like that after our testing.
Thanks for the info, always nice to get real world info! I’ll redo it at some point for sure! But I really need to turn it down to about 800hp so my pocket survives, lol
Hey John, i have a small block nitrous build and was wondering whats the purpose/ whats a good way to hook up the steam ports, i notices yours are hooked up
I do not run water in the block, the head gaskets are solid. I only run water through the heads. The two steam ports are where the water comes into the back of the motor, and then it comes out the front thermostat housing.
John. I’m switching to methanol. Do you have any experience with the magnafuel pro outlaw 1000? Trying to find someone that makes mounting bracket for ls
Only thing I can find as a flow number was “UP TO 150psi 10.5gph @ 4000rpm 10an”. I’m pretty sure it will be more than enough for what I’m doing. I’m on a budget like everyone and for $580 seems like a no brainer. I was going to try the Enderly pump. Price was a little steep but a lot cheaper than a mini Bertha from waterman.
@@steveni00318 Keep your eyes open, people sell used Enderle pumps all the time. Back in the day, I picked up an 80A-1 and sent it off for service and the guy gave me credit towards a 110 he had sitting on the shelf. You might be able to swing something similar.
A lot, but it depends on power. Most people size the pumps and injectors got a BSFC of 1.8-2.0. From what I can tell from hp calculators, my bsfc is about 1.6-1.7ish!
We got down to 5.10’s -5.20’s in non intercooled e85 trim. Then started having headgasket/piston issues. If you intercool it it can make more power. It just gets to a point non intercooled, where no matter the a/f or timing it hurts parts. I have heard of people going faster than we did, but there was something special in the motor combination that made it live! Methanol is the superior fuel!
Can the enderle 110 be used inna methonal blow thru carb. C&s dual needle seat carb. If so what regulator i run a aeromotive 13201 boost reference now with a1000 pump
As long as the regulator can keep up with the flow at idle and part throttle. Most of the fuel will need to be going back to the tank. Call alky digger and ask. I had the red aeromotive on mine with carb, but it was only 7gpm at WOT
Thanks man! That was awesome. Budget methanol setup. Who knew? I've got a question for you. If I run a 351w production block, what years are the best? Are the later roller blocks any good? I'm looking at a factory block for a couple of reasons. First so I can run production block, and second because it's a grand or so cheaper. I've seen stock 351w blocks run over 1100hp on the dyno but nothing long term. Figuring 9/16 oversize main studs with 4 bolt splayed billet caps, 30% block fill, 408 stroker with forged crank to keep worries of cap walk down. I'm sure it will break eventually, gonna run the boost up on meth.

That was super helpful do you use a primer pump, do you run water in the block?
I do not run s primer pump, if it’s cold I’ll spray brake clean in the vacuum port to help it crank. But when it’s warm, it fires right up most times.

Yeah I’d run precision’s over a atomizer twice on Sunday and I know people that has had nothing but problems out of atomizers hanging open.
Those are the best injectors hands down at least precision injectors ain’t hanging open like a atomizer or others I’ve seen I’ve had mine for 3 years now and no problems and yes I run methanol.

Yes, that is the scary thing about methanol. The flame is hard to see.

good info im on e85 with 160 now and wanting to go 2 sets of bosh 210 on meth thanks for the info
Why do you run so much base pressure? I'd worry about oring failure on the injectors. Good information that you're giving out on this channel!
That is what the injectors are rated at for that flow. Over 325’s in atomizers are at 85 or 90psi.
Thanks for the info. This helps a bunch.
Best RUclips channel ever

Very good tips
Not sure if you have did a video on this but could you do one on turbo pipe sizing
Hey John, what wideband sensor/controller do you use for methanol?
Holley efi, uses an NTK sensor

Hahah. For real Have a good weekend.
I know this is an old video but if the pump volume or pressure is too high you can always run a pump Loop

Just to clarify, you run 550lb/hr injectors? What’s your duty cycle with the m1 fuel?
John. I’m switching to methanol. Do you have any experience with the magnafuel pro outlaw 1000? Trying to find someone that makes mounting bracket for ls
I don’t have any experience with the magna fuel stuff, I tried finding flow charts but that info is not out there that I could find.

10.5gpm is a lot, you can over drive it a little if you don’t spin the engine to 8000.

Insidetopalcohol.com is a good site got used parts also.
Subbed. I bought a used aeromotive mechanical pump. Hopefully my injectors are ok with methanol.
Thanks
Thanks for the vid..how many more gallons does it take compared to normal gas..looking to run in a strip street car

Could you run e85 on a setup similar to yours without intercooler ? or would there any benefit to running e85 other than a smaller fuel system
We got down to 5.10’s -5.20’s in non intercooled e85 trim. Then started having headgasket/piston issues. If you intercool it it can make more power. john where you finding methanol for 3$/gal cheapest i can find is 12$/gal
Can you show us your cooling system, are you just running water threw the heads only?!
yes, solid head gasket with water going into back of intake and then out thermostat housing back to pump and small transmission cooler.
Thanks for the video
What’s the way you set your base pressure and is that what you insert into the Holley for fuel pressure?
I want this motor in my ecoboost mustang lol
I went pretty fast with 2 blue pumps a carb and 2 stacked plates on c 16
Does Enderle still make pumps?
Can the enderle 110 be used inna methonal blow thru carb. C&s dual needle seat carb. If so what regulator i run a aeromotive 13201 boost reference now with a1000 pump
As long as the regulator can keep up with the flow at idle and part throttle. Most of the fuel will need to be going back to the tank. Call alky digger and ask. I had the red aeromotive on mine with carb, but it was only 7gpm at WOT
Where do you find Methanol for $3?
If you buy it in bulk, 55 gallon drums. We get ours from Fayetteville, Bobby Taylor Oil Company.
👍👍
What about E85

Where do u buy methanol?
We get ours from Bobby Taylor oil company in Fayettevillle, NC. VP M1 is what we run.
Very very thin budget. Lol. There’s a reason my truck is named DirtCheap.
Can I have yo exact engine combo
SBC, 3.34 stroke crank, 6.200 rod, flat tops, Profiler 23deg heads
✝️🇺🇸👍
