The lower level in the shot was most likely painted onto a pane of glass that the camera then filmed through to give the illusion it was a genuine part of the scenery.

Yeah Paulette had a very unique look, Thirties hairstyles are, of course, dated today but Paulette looks very, very modern-a bit of a sixties/seventies onwards natural look actually.
