That smoke detector, I would slap some blue tape on it, takes 2 secs and it fully complies to 514.1.2, deneturalising the black is sensible but not a regulatory requirement.
@6:30 I'd have to disagree John on a C3 for using the black core as Neutral. It's definitely a C3 for no blue sleeving but you can use whichever core you like if it's identified properly (514). Nothing in BS7671 about 'deneutralising the black'. The contractor who wired that place needs to step away from electrics
C3 for the smoke?? You can use any core to wire smokes as long as it is sleeved. You dont sleeve the interlink core. You have a ionisation detector, should be optical.
Looks like this one was built over a couple of months of Friday afternoons or whenever they were low on stock 😬

16:18 John standing in front of that kitchen sink, I know the NHBC state 300mm from the sink for the socket outlet but it always looks too close. Lots of shoddy workmanship in that house, the AC missing covers which looks to compromise fire integrity of the building, poor connections, 230v wires left out in the bathroom. There are now so many ways we can avoid all these issues but sadly so many companies are either in a rush or don't employ people that take pride in their work.
Hopefully the client can use this video and the report as evidence to claim against the builder.
Such attention to detail, and following through tidying up as you go - nice job.

The downlight with the broken CPC wire, to me it looks like the cable strain relief clamp was biting down on the basic insulation. 13:31
Props for sticking with that job & not just walking away from it.
9 MCBs on the top bank RCD and 11 on the bottom bank is a ridiculous amount considering the combined PE leakage across all those circuits and the potential for nuisance tripping. Daft thing is take the cost of Duplex Dual RCD con unit and 20 MCBs and for £50/60 more the customer could have had a Wylex single bank, 19 way unit full of RCBO’s. Expensive property, pretty sure the owner would of been happy to pay the extra.
How do people get away with doing electrics like that! Justice needs serving

Very Cautious indeed, guess I should be getting a risk assessment done when I’m going to stand on a flat roof, usually if they look old & generally in poor condition, I wouldn’t risk walking on them, otherwise I have often risked it ! Very thorough John.

At 4mins in - that is a lovely bank of isolators, but none are labelled? Oh my days.
The IC on those EI146 detectors absolutely should be sleeved brown. They only have a capacitive dropper power supply so technically non isolated from the live and can potentially be live. Because it can be intermittently live, treat it like a switched live.
Wouldn't it be good if the cable companies made a three core for domestic use with Brown, Blue, Grey as core colours :-)
You can get ambiguous Zs on sockets which vary greatly when the socket has been in use over time due to the inner pins being moved out of line. This is due to the human act of never putting a plug 'straight' in and at slight angles. Also dust build up!!
@8:25 the AC unit will be in the ceiling with the vent, but will be getting its power from the outdoor unit. There should be access for it, but loads of builders box them in fully…

That was extremely thorough, the no earth on the lights were pretty bad, chomping away at the joist / batton ...... ive done it on the odd occasion where the customer insisted the lights have to be straight, but obviously you have to assess the beam etc.
In 3 core applications i always use grey for a neutral WITH blue sleeving, and black as either a switched live ( brown sleeving) or on swa the black as an earth WITH grn & yellow sleeving, i quite often see the grey used as an earth 😣
No sleeving required for the smoke alarm, black core is just a signal wire and carries no voltage
You sure no brands of smoke alarm use 230v on the interlink? Either way, I'd argue it comes under control circuitry so it can use any non-earth/non-neutral colour even if it is >50v

@@Webbster77 Aico started it as a 0 volt link and most other brands have followed suit. Never sleeve it brown but will use Red Triple cable to identify it so people are aware in future.
I've always taken it as the calculated Zs would be an absolute maximum (thus if that's within spec for the breaker etc you're fine), whereas a measured may give you a 'better' reading, but that might be down to eg a parallel earth path from say a water pipe, that in future might be removed and thus the value increase and get closer to the Ze + R1+R2 value
I'll always do a live Zs on sockets and at the board, but use the calculation method for anything else that would involve me faffing around sticking multiple probes into live parts. What kind of spark thought 2 RCDs covering 20 circuits was a good idea?
the interconnecting cable on the smoke alarms doesnt need brown sleeving, i believe its only 12v and has to be an "identifiable colour" so can be left black

I find that all the time that the Zs is lower than the R1+R2. My hypothesis is that the higher voltage breaks down oxidation... As the resistance on a megger mft is usually only 200mA

That looks like a nightmare of a property for doing an EICR, this is why I have an excessive circuit clause in my EICR's when I provide a price based on number of bedrooms, would love to compare your very decent EICR against an £80 EICR, maybe you should do that, find a property, do an EICR and rectify any and all faults, then add in a load of faults and find the cheapest company to do an EICR and see if they actually find anything...

Looking at the earths behind that fasts fix box shoddy why can’t the electrician install a deeper fasta fix box then they can bring all the cables into the box and terminate them in to wago connectors.
Great work John, that electrical installation is a mess for a expensive new build property.

I believe the IC on the aico fire alarms are 9v as they need to b3 able to send this signal when running on battery so no need to sleeve the cable for IC, I use to sleeve it but have stopped doing so now.
Forgive me for nit-picking, you mention you'd code using a black-sleeved-blue neutral as a C3, but AFAIK there's nothing in the regs saying this isn't allowed...
Completely agree it's a best practice, and some governing bodies recommend to sleeve up specific cores, but the only mention in the regs I know of is Amendment 2 saying you shouldn't sleeve up a green+yellow and use it as a live:
_514.4.2 “Single-core cables and conductors in multicore cables identified by green-and-yellow throughout their length shall only be used as a protective conductor and shall not be overmarked at their terminations, except as permitted by Regulation 514.4.3 (PEN conductor)”_
Don't take this as me criticising the video, John's knowledge or skill. All are excellent. I just wanted to discuss the specific point above as it peaked my interest
It wasn't sleeved so that probably does justify a C3, but just using the black as neutral doesn't IMO
The interlink terminal is only 9v dc and doesn’t require brown sleeving

Looks a bit of a nightmare that one and good call about not venturing out on to that roof... like the electrics in that one, what looks fine on the surface can hide a whole host of nasties under the surface. 👍

Don’t understand how he can’t trust the integrity of the flat roof ?! There’s going to have been building control involved when it was built, and also someone would have had to access it to install the AC so it’s clearly going to be fine
Yeah it looks pretty safe I would of gone up there but as he's employed through Artisan he was correct to get permission.
Its a shame building control didnt oversee the electrics too.
Extremely thorough!! Showing how it should be done given the time.. not that time should be a factor.. I think as you get older and more experienced you appreciate how dangerous a bad electrical install can be. Being a new build these days doesn’t mean it’s safe. I mainly work to new builds but I actually care about doing a good job and testing it properly. If I leave a plot after testing I like to be able to sleep at night
I still lightly twist all my earths together on a lighting circuit , I don’t care if some Herbert from the NICEIC frowns on it , I know it’s going to be a solid connection and one of the earths isn’t going to ping out !!!
I don't disagree with you but really if I ever have more than about 4 or 5 cpcs I will use a second and maybe even sometimes a third block and link them out, overcrowded terminals are never good for getting a sound connection, though a twist does help ;)

Post 2018 ANYONE that installed a Dual RCD rig has mugged their client, utter junk, no excuses, perhaps the IEE should move from Old Testament to New Testament
If you have any kind off 3 disconnect old world crapper installed post 2010, you can probably claim not fit for purpose due to insufficient discrimination and get all your install cost back
The above video shows a setup that whilst compliant ( I would argue not due to poor design and high probability of nuisance tripping) but in that grade of deployment it is RCBO or RCBO...
We have attended a large number of "new" installation (often with Viable EICs ) that have required a full rip out of the consumer unit (The unit install just requires new busbars and RCBOs to pull it up top "real" 2022 spec....

Ring circuits are so much more trouble than they're worth especially for fault finding. A break in the ring under load could easily melt the remaining leg never mind having a nightmarish number of unrelated loads sharing a breaker. Such an overly complicated way of doing things without any clear advantages.
EICR’s aren’t worth the arsehole paper they’re written on these days
I’m still working as a domestic electrician but am close to leaving the industry. As things get more complicated people are becoming less competent

Great video, looks like an amazing house but that switch wow how many cables I am not a perfect electrician by any means but I look at some of the work that people do even people I work with and it is shocking, and all that money spent would you not fit an rcbo board? Take some pride in your work and do a good job instead of how fast can we do it, a lot of the work in new builds is shocking because of the speed that people are expected to work at, they are building some new houses near me and the speed they are going up at is ridiculous bet its a wire one house a day job lol. Great work as always, shame we all don't get the time to do our jobs properly.

That's why when I rewire a property, I do radials for each room separately and the lights too ( RCBO's throughout ).
Only "ring" I do is kitchen and appliances, excluding fridge.
May need a bigger board and cost a bit more, but fault finding and testing so much easier I find.

For a new build I just can believe how bad the installation was and adjustments to it were terrible. It’s a difficult one to get it all right.

You Aren't Allowed to Sleeve the Old Colours to the New Colours,, you have to replace or inform the client that 'if it's a new build' to Contact the Building Company that Built it

Some even do a drive by one, that's why they get the job, cheaper, a lot cheaper for a cert than the guys that do a thorough job & therefore charges / bills accordingly,

I would be interested in the cost for John to do an EICR ( let’s say the average 2-4 bed you get £ £274-350 max from most estate agents John must be £700 plus but either way that job was SHOCKING in so many ways.

@@Matt-td9wx correct we do not its a visual inspection by government inspector or agent depending on the local laws. Some states are stricter some ara like if the work is small or not enough monetary value work doesn't even need to be checked. Most of our testing just includes a continuity test at most. Why we have wiring systems over 100 yes old still in service with a lot of electrical fires from modern appliances lol if you have the time watch some vids on USA or Canada wiring
@@wizard3z868 I always found it strange when I worked in Texas and Cali that there was no Self Certification and paperwork with test results supplied by the electrical contractors at the end of a home build/refurb. Only a site walk during first fix and second fix stages by the local government inspector.
When I enquired as to why it was so different it basically boiled down to circuit design, radials not ring final circuits and lower amp limits than the UK.
@@effervescence5664 well I find it refreshing that you have 1st hand experience with north American wiring and I tend to do things more on the professional side of things like going above code requirements when practicle. But wld love to be able to do some of the testing you do for eicr but I don't think that equipment exists over here lol.
Using higher gauge wire for welders instead of say 2mill I'll use like 3 mill but use a 16amp breaker. (I may be wrong I'm not sure the Amp sizes to mill wire guage I just see a lot of 2 mill 16 Amp radials with 32 amps for 2 mill rings.) Some of us yanks can lrn too lol
Or I'll using bushings on condiut fittings that are not required I mean like $.50 isn't going to break me if it keeps the wire from chaffing or a short. But many a professional say thts a waste of time and money.
I'm no professional kind of a long story as to why but at best I'd say I'm a handyman with to much real world experience lol

Why is it not OK to use the black as line and grey as natural?
The regs changed and state neutral should now be blue, its 514.4.1 of BS7671 it did however use to be black for neutral it changed a while back now.

Split load boards… No place for them. There has clearly been a lot of money spent on this property, albeit shocking workmanship. Loosing power to 10 circuits here is not acceptable… the difference in cost between split load and RCBO’s is very little nowadays.
This is what you want to see when you get someone who is getting done EICR. Instead, you get your £150 EICR which is not worth a penny! With tons of limitations that are not limitations "I couldn't be bothered to move the microwave to access that socet behind" Nice work AE

Very true - but all we can do is our best professional job and let the client decide what action to take once they have accurate information about the condition of the installation

With the 3 core at the smoke, our company switched from using the grey as the neutral and now use the black. I believe they did it because they were to sensitive or something along those lines and were getting loads of call outs for smokes going off.

Also.... C3 for using black as neutral? Nothing on the regs to forbid it.
The regs say neutral identified by colour shall be blue 514.4.1 in other words you can't use a black now.
