Oh! You got to the Career Guidance! 🙄 A personal gripe. Schools gear career guidance at steering kids towards colleges and universities that create nice stats for incoming parents, rather than considering the actual student and the success of their future careers and work life. Good on you for making the point! 👏👏
I love this video for a whole load of reasons. Most of all, I love that great people don't necessarily need to confirm to great systems to get fantastic results. Systems are brilliant but often leave little or no scope for creativity. 10 out of 10.
This Filipina-American Zazzle Creator here who restarted the venture after 12 years wants to give you a bouquet for an outstanding talk! I was so fortunate to have held down a job as prep cook at a fast casual restaurant for nearly 6.5 years (lost it due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020). It was about 40% masking and 60% enjoyment (was fortunate to have taken culinary operations classes in HS).
(Continued) Ever heard of ABAWD? It means able-bodied adults without disabilities. The huge irony is that because we NDs 18-59 have one of the highest unemployment/underemployment rates, most of us who are underemployed/unemployed run the risk of losing temporarily (or till we run the process of reapplying for) food stamps, Medicaid, etc. And finding employment, let alone holding to such that would fulfill that 20-plus-hour workweek, is a heavy, heavy cross each one of most of us NDs bear. (Take this from this said Filipina-American Catholic.)
(Continued) The USDA says, “Participation in SNAP E&T (employment and training) which is a type of work program, is one way a person can meet the 80 hour per month ABAWD work requirement, but participating in qualifying activities in other work programs is acceptable as well.” In other words, if we NDs can’t find work that has us hold down jobs that have 20-plus-hour workweeks, then we had to train AND retrain ourselves to fit in the boxes the speaker mentioned and to spend hours finding the aforementioned jobs that have 20-plus-hour workweeks.
With me about to spend 2-3 years traveling around the USA and the world and relocating to the Philippines afterwards, me being subjected to the ABAWD cross I have to carry as an ND would be improbable. (And there aren’t much in the way of JOBs - and yes, I acronymized it, me calling them “journeys of brokeness” - for NDs in the Philippines, and the traditions and culture do little to help anyway.) And that FAR BEYOND INSPIRING vid is EXACTLY why I decided to do business with Zazzle and open myself up to new ways to be entrepreneurial in the coming years.
