  • The Real Gene Krupa Floor Tom Tom Rhythms in Sing, Sing, Sing by Kevin Dorn is a wonderful lesson on Gene Krupa's rhythms, beats, sticking, accents, double notes, ghost notes, rim shots and stick shots. He studied Gene's drumming techniques since High School and at first thought the floor tom tom sticking was single beats (no). In these lessons he explains and demonstrates the what, when and how to play them. Also he talks about how Gene over his career did play new and older rhythms. There really isn't just one set of beats he played to Sing, Sing, Sing. In this video Gene plays on the floor tom tom. In other recordings he also plays the other tom tom too. To think Carnegie Hall Jan. 16, 1938 is still this important in jazz and drumming. Kevin Dorn is a Jazz Drummer, Music Historian and willing to share his knowledge on RUclips. He has followed the greats in drumming and can name probably over 30 to 40 drummers from the 1920's to the 1950's. All of them made drumming great. If you watch this video and practice the floor tom tom beats you will become a better drummer and learn about adding or subtracting accent beats and ghost beats for a slightly different sound.
Thank you Kevin Dorn for sharing and demonstrating some of the harder drumming techniques from the "ACE" Drummer Mr. Gene Krupa.
Michael Hoffman Edited, Produced and Writer of the above. I cut and pasted many segments to repeat the lessons over and over and over. I added the on screen text of the sticking sequences. At the end of the video i added the complete Sing, Sing, Sing song so you can play to it. Enjoy. Michael Hoffman.
