  • Hello friends, my name is Christine, and welcome to Frugal Fit Mom! This was the first grocery shopping trip I have done in a month and we were LOW on a lot of things. I am trying my hand at going to the store much less often during this pandemic and shelter in place order in my state. I was able to find everything I needed for my family and even used some local food suppliers for great looking produce. I hope you enjoy our very large grocery shopping haul today!

    To have your asparagus last longer, cut the ends off and stand it up in a cup of water in the fridge. It will last at least a week that way. 😊

    Good Morning Christine! As a nurse that works in a Major ICU in Downtown Sacramento. I am a Southern Girl from a small town North of New Orleans ( Slidell). I am widowed , with no children. But my brother that passed away, his son, daughter in law, and there 3 small children live with me. When I am off from work, I isolate away from the family. I just want to keep them safe. I love watching RUclips and your channel was recommended to me. I am addicted to your channel. Yes , I binge watch . I love seeing a happy marriage, with a beautiful family that you can see the love. Plus you make supper yummy food. I just purchased one of the 8 quart Instapot, that does everything. I found it a wholesale with a little tiny dent for 80 dollars , In pristine condition. So I am thankful for your bean recipe last week! Have an amazing week.

    Grocery store worker here! We recommend that people just do their normal amount of shopping. While we do have most things back in stock again (save for cleaning products and yeast), we won't be able to handle people stock piling again. Not saying you are!
    Just a psa for everyone out there. As long as people shop reasonably, there should be no reason to worry about the grocery stores not having food again!
    Edit: also, check your local distilleries to see if they're making hand sanitizer.

      Fellow grocery store worker here. Yeah people do not realize that most grocery stores are only stocked for a 2-4 day supply. Panic shopping doesn't help anyone.
      After this, as a California resident, I started to think about how stores in hurricane areas handle pre storm shopping.

    • @genxx2724

      @@katasia68 The pandemonium in the stores was nuts. In my opinion, there should have been a hard lock-down, with the National Guard dropping rations outside each home. Nobody allowed outside. Alternately, WWII ration booklets, so only what’s needed for each member of a household could be purchased. Everyone in our government is too young to know about this. I have my grandparents’ ration booklets. The coupon had to be detached in the presence of the clerk, so they could not be sold or traded. The booklets were issued monthly and expired at the end of the month. The cover said, “If you don’t need it, don’t buy it.” Either of these techniques would have eliminated the crowds, emptying of shelves, vulnerable people suffering without, and all the spread of virus in the stores.

    • @katasia68
      @katasia68 3 года назад +1

      @@genxx2724 I feel like after seeing the scenes in China and Italy that's what people were preparing for. I mean America now is a much different America than it was in WWII in terms of personal freedom and the idea of sacrifice for the betterment of the entire country. I do agree we needed a hard lockdown, however I don't think we are going to get one. I think we as a country are just too polarized and into our personal freedoms. We could have been setting the example for what to do, and now we're setting the example for what NOT to do. 😐

    Hi Chris. We often slice up oranges (as rings) and eat them as a salad with olive oil...sometimes we do it with apples as well but the apples get oil vinegar and salt added. We also make salad with slightly blanched broccoli, green beans ,cauliflower and blanched slices of zucchini. I'm an Aussie with an Italian background. You can also add pine nuts or crispy prosciutto to the salads. I often mix my Australian and Italian backgrounds together,

    On the topic of milk I come from a dairy farming family, and one of the factors that makes milk spoil the fastest besides bacteria is light! So if anyone is living in a state where milk is still being limited and you need to get as long as possible out of a jug, not allowing it to sit out even after you get home from the store or letting it sit in a vehicle while you shop at other stores can help extend its shelf life.

      Since people don't like the plant based milk comment, most dairy in America is cow based casein A1 protein - this causes inflammation and grows cancer in the body. If you switched to sheep or goat, that is casein A2 protein which doesn't cause inflammation or grow cancer. Not all dairy is equal.

I just wanted to let you know that the CDC recommends masks and gloves primarily to ensure that we don't spread COVID-19 to others. A low amount of reported cases in your state is more likely to be a result of a lack of testing than a lack of cases at this point. Mask making can be a fun activity with the family while you're in quarantine and it could protect your community when you do need to go out. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy :)

My neighbors (dairy farm) received a letter last week that they will only be paid for 85% of their milk and the price being paid will be almost half of what they need to pay their bills! Thank you so much for supporting them!

    I keep my asparagus in a little bit of water in the door of my fridge and it keeps for two to three weeks. We have a large movie cup and we use it just for asparagus. Just cut a little bit off the end so it soaks up water.Potatoes and onion and apples for that matter are best kept out of the refridge. Potatoes should be kept between 40 and 50 degrees F and most fridges are colder than that.

    I finally scored a 6pk of toilet paper. Never thought that would have made me that excited. And I would kill for bread flour and yeast right now. None in my store, and my stash is getting very low. Area: Tampa Bay.

    • @rhiahlMT
      @rhiahlMT 4 года назад +4

      Buy the big blocks of yeast at Costco if you are a member. I am using yeast from 2012 because I keep it in the freezer. It stays good. When I open the blocks, I put the excess in a jar and put it back in the freezer. Then I keep a jar in my refrigerator. When my little yeast jar in my pantry runs out I fill from the refrigerator. Funny thing about yeast you freeze it, the countdown to when it doesn't work starts AFTER you pull it out. So, when this blows over, buy some and freeze. Also, you can buy gluten. Add that to flour and you've got bread flour. It's sold under vital wheat gluten. Likely out of stock. shop.honeyville.com/shop-by-category/bakery/conditioners-and-additives.html

    I am a Jordan Page fan and she (8 children) budgets $25.00/person/week so $250.00/ month. Your shop at $125.00 for a month was $31.25 / week or $5.21/ person / week - not counting in Walmart haul. Great job ! That is way less than what the average American family spends.
    Even before the pandemic I saw non organic non free range eggs priced at $3.00+ at groceries stores due to a " shortage". Due to your well stocked freezers and pantry you can save $ even during times of high prices - Good job
