I don’t wear all to much workwear, but I will be honest… I think the argument of authenticity is bogus and overplayed out. This goes not only for workwear but also for trends as a whole.
Everyday joes who don’t run and sit around all day wear running shoes, people working 9-5’s going home every night wear mountain recreation clothing, people who aren’t cowboys or coal mine workers wear selvedge denim/ normal denim (which is now a significant piece of pop culture), people who don’t live in arctic conditions wear Canada goose, people who don’t regularly hunt wear Barbour, people who don’t work in kitchens wear Clogs/mules, I could go on forever.
Clothing is and always will be appropriated. They will be used in a way against their inherent function. I don’t view that as a bad thing. Out of this comes experimentation (among many other things) which I view as invaluable in fashion

The workwear thing hits home with me as a lifelong blue collar worker. I’m totally cool with people wearing it casually, BUT it’s kind of stilly to see people wear things like double knees or lineman patches. They make those items way less flexible and comfortable, so why anyone would choose that for the look is beyond me! Still, live and let live.

On the work wear thing, Ive been an electrician for 10 years and it never bothered me that people started wearing Carhartt as a fashion trend. When I'm not at work, I usually wear double front Greasepoint work jeans and boots. To me, it feels authentic. It's like the stuff I wear at work but much higher quality and a vintage feel. I really don't care if this is considered a "dead trend". It just feels right for me.

Killing jorts 1000% ??? That sounds like a fascist fashion police to me. I have lived for many years in Paris where Parisians told me with disgust how bad certains garments do look like. First, I was sold because, hey, if the fashionable Parisians are saying it, it has to be true. Later, I realized that the whole city of Paris looks like a dystopian place where everybody is wearing the same outfit. Boring!
I admit that jorts are a very controversial topic mainly because they can look pretty bad, if worn, and I mean IF worn, by a male person with a wrong body shape. Too short, too tight, over the knee, etc.
However, there is a sweet spot where jorts can look good on a person depending on the jorts itself AND on the person wearing it.

If you’re tall enough and in decent shape you can make boot cuts work. If you’re short you should probably go with something relatively slim in the leg, if you have really muscular thighs, those near skin tight jeans can look good, etc.

What is "cultural appropriation?" Are Japanese jeans cultural appropriation? How about Japanese Whisky and all the other things they adopted from other cultures and either perfectly replicated or in some cases improved? I've never heard anyone complaining about that. Isn't it all just "cultural exchange" and a good thing? Do people born with the accident of certain DNA haplogroups somehow own certain cultural artifacts? How does one determine which artifacts belong to which culture? How far back do we have to go in history to figure it out?

I just wear classic menswear mostly and couldn't care less about trends. Of course I take some inspiration from some current looka by certain people or brands, but I lean towards stuff that I feel I will be comfortable in until the garment is worn out, repaired and worn out again. I am sure some people will find this super lame and the baggy ivy style clothing prevent me from showing off my "guns" or my quads, but tbh I like it that way.
Something I like is, that pants are cut wider now and the skinny trend is over. Because squats made my body so that I cannot wear skinny pants anymore.
My personal trends are current looks by G. Bruce Boyer and Tony Madsen Sylvester or Simon from Permanent Style.

I’m glad you brought up the whole “Stolen Valor” thing. I personally enjoy Selvedge & MUSA leather/canvas clothing, but it’s more from the craftsmanship & quality aspect of it all. I prefer owning “fewer, nicer things.” Function trumps form in my personal opinion. Having said that, I’ll browse places like Instagram and see what essentially looks like “1930s Union-Man Cosplay.” I personally buy & wear one or two pairs of raw selvedge because I know that I will be covered for 3 - 4 years, with lighter fabrics for Summer. When I see individuals taking “fashion” pictures in a new pair of 25-Oz jeans or Redwings or Belts weekly if not daily - that to me defeats the purpose of owning high-quality clothing. Just a personal, snobby, elitist opinion I formulated after seeing the 1000th coffee barista/retail associate/IT Specialist dressed like they’re going to work on a 19th century locomotive or the Empire State Building. Again, just an observation that’s coming from a former late 90s skateboarder who called everyone a “poser” who wore skate brands without skating or used skate companies the teenage-skater “zeitgeist” deemed “lame.” Cheers, all.

First of all, what a dope channel I'm so glad I came across your videos!
Regarding the authenticity discussion, I think the point being made is that, for example, the decision to wear cowboy boots on the subway is purely fashionable and not practical- and in fashion that is sort of the line that separates those that know vs who doesn't. In terms of Gorp- yes, an arc'teryx is an effective garment in cold or wet weather but depending on how it is styled determines the wearers "intention". To embody the Gorp aesthetic or just have a practical jacket for that day's weather is the same dilemma as work wear or even the dilution of the ALD aesthetic we have all seen and appreciated to some extent.

Late comment, but I’ll be honest, it gets to be +40C where I am in the summer and I still generally wear jeans or pants.
However, my going on 15 year rule for shorts has been: if your goal is to not have fabric on your legs, shorts need to be really short and really light weight, and really loose. Think a 6”-8” inseam, light linen, cotton blend, or synthetic.
Ideally some Patagonia Baggies always did the trick, but I guess we can’t GORP now, sooo… back to my Dickies 874s… oh wait, can’t do that either. Guess I’ll be walking round in my briefs for 2024 😅

Is there something going on in mainstream that i missed. People ware levis polos with embroider logo or white t with big printed logo and those sneakers inspired by Italian sneakers but with levis logo. @@CeeAreDee Jorts (cut off) were a trend in the US in the 70's-80's. Hemmed sold as a product Jorts entered the market in the mid to late 1980's and were out of fashion in the US by the early 90's (replaced for the most part by cargo pants at the time). As a product, Jorts still exist but do not have the same ubiquity in terms of adoption. There are other materials that are far more breathable and flexible to wear in the summer than denim, not to mention more flattering cuts.

Funny you should say that few people look good in bootcut jeans. I’m 45, and I used to think the same about slim/skinny jeans around 2002-4, when the whole fad started, around the time of The Strokes and all the rest. Then people got used to the look, and we got 20 years of slim cut pants, with everyone - literally everyone - wearing them, including chubby, short men (and women) that looked terrible in that cut. When and if bootcuts/flares come back, it will feel weird and wrong at first, and then people will get used to it as well. So it goes with fashion.

'strict' blue collar workwear has been pretty played out for a while. cosplay/building site playmobil puts it well. I hadn't heard of Aime Leon Dore, but i'm pleased to say that from initial google image searching it looks pretty similar to how lockdown impacted the way i dressed - looser, more comfortable, and a casually deliberate hotchpotch - seemingly function over form but with an intentional style.
was expecting short inseams to make your list. first saw it on someone wearing selvage and the 'inch above the ankle' was a bit much for heavy denim - but a cropped on the ankle bone length loose linen trouser, lightweight chino or cord? yes i like it. not going to get my denim rehemmed in a hurry (although now i have got use to all-day-everyday pyjamawear the denim is hanging and feeling a bit sad).

Both good choices and if we’re being sensible then 2 pairs of good jeans is more than enough. But this becomes a hobby and a passion and then the sky’s the limit. Although I do consider my collection to be a bit much. And I’ve thinned it down a lot.
