Beautiful reaction to John Wayne's final film. The fact that he died of cancer a few years later makes this movie more significant. I highly recommend his 1972 film The Cowboys. It's really good. Thanks again for a great reaction.

@@MovieJoobespecially since he had already survived cancer once before, so he had experienced that. And he was also experiencing the end of the western movie era, and his movie career, just as Books was experiencing the end of the American western era, and his shootist career. The movie was as much a fitting send-off and tribute for the life and career of John Wayne as it was for J.B. Books.

The Duke really went out on top. I think when he ponies up to the bar for his birthday drink, that is actually John Wayne in his full splendor, not JB Books we see. Also, this film is well written, well shot, well edited and well acted by all involved.
It sounds silly of me, but I love how much you liked Lauren Bacall. That woman was a legend, and good to see that she can still make an impression.

My dad died of cancer and as I'm writing this, I'm crying 😢. We were very close me and my dad. 15 years ago and still hurting over it. Died in my arms in hospice. Love ya dad.❤

My mom died after being diagnosed with Lieukemia. 12 years ago. My dad still lives, he turns 91 in January.

I’m so sorry for your loss. And yet at the same time I’m at least slightly jealous. I’ve lived overseas for 21 years now and wasn’t able to get home in time to be with either of my parents when they passed away. But I was lucky enough to be able to talk with my mother on the phone a few hours before, and for that I’m grateful. Now I’m crying too. I hope we both find something to smile over today.😉
Went thru that 47 years ago. Pain dulled with time, but the ache is still there for what I saw him suffer.
Lauren Bacall, whose voice you love, got her first big break in movies costarring with Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944) , another good movie. They ended up getting married. She was considered one of the most beautiful actresses of her time.
When she was younger, her voice alone could give me weak knees.

Such a stacked cast in this. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Lauren Bacall, John Carradine, Hugh O'Brian, Scatman Crothers, Harry Morgan, Richard Boone and on and on. Also, nobody would have guessed watching Gillom Rogers that Ron Howard would go on to direct and produce so many huge films.
This was John Wayne's final film as an actor as he was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1979 at 80.
He was 72 when he died.
John Wayne received his 1st Cancer Diagnosis for Lung Cancer in 1964.

This is so bittersweet. The reunion of Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne , while brief, was great. Lauren Becall married to Humphrey Bogart, who also died of Cancer. ...so many things in this movie was a tribute to the Wayne Western.

I don’t know why, there was something so emotional about that young lady on the trolley so jubilantly saying “Isn’t it a beautiful day today?” and then right before he exits the trolley, Wayne tells her “I hope the right one comes along.” He can totally sense that she is a true sweetheart by her kindness and optimism, and wants the best for her. I also think it was emotional that Wayne’s character was so positive on his last day and perhaps that encouraged others, even though they didn’t know he was dying. Such a profound and beautiful movie.
That young actress (Melody Thomas Scott) later went on to play her most famous role on The Young & The Restless as Nikki Newman.

It was a sad 😭 day when The Duke died. He was a huge part of my life. Ron Howard is the kid in this movie 🎥 . Now he's one of the best directors we have. Apollo 13 and other great movies.

My father was such a John Wayne fan that he named me John Wayne Duval. I in turn became a big, big fan of the duke also. I actually saw this movie with my Dad the weekend it opened and I have loved this movie since. I always felt so bad when I heard he had cancer for real while filming this movie, now at 60 I find out I have stage 4 cancer in the same place as he did, so this movie reaction really hit me this evening. Thank you for showing it the respect it deserves with a perfect reaction.
Dukes last film, have seen this so many times, I can quote every line, great story, great, great film, with a great cast! Thank you for reacting to this one, your awesome! A couple of things that you are likely not aware of. The woman who owns the boarding house is played by Lauren Bacall, the widow of the great actor Humphrey Bogart. Her characters name Bond is in memory of John Wayne’s best friend in life the actor Ward Bond.
I never knew that about Lauren's character's name.
The young blonde girl on the street car is Melody Thomas Scott. She also has a long list of credits. She is currently on the afternoon soap series, The Young and the Restless.
The mortition is John Caradin . Another legendary star .

As I'm sure you've heard by now in the comments, Jade, John Wayne was actually dying of cancer when he made this film, his final movie. I lost my mother and father to cancer so "The shootist" always hits me hard and dredges up deep emotions. I'm so sorry to hear about your maternal grandmother's battle with cancer - God bless her and keep her!

He actually was not dying of cancer during the filming of the movie. He would die of stomach cancer 3 years later.

John Wayne's last theatrical movie release and I was there. I was in my mid-twenties and am now 71. The "Duke" was 71 when he filmed this classic, and it gives one some pause to how much time has passed.
A western set in modern times that I really enjoyed was Hell or High Water. Might be a good change of pace from the classic spaghetti westerns 😊

"Old man" John Wayne movies are among my favorite John Wayne movies, so I recommend "The Cowboys" and "Big Jake." While I'm at it, I'll also recommend "Fort Apache" because it's a "top 10" John Ford favorite of mine even though John Wayne isn't old in that movie and is more a (prominent) member of a great ensemble cast rather than the star per se.
I second that. Especially "Big Jake" as it bring on another showdown between John Wayne and Richard Boone. It also has two offspring of iconic actors playing Wayne's on screen sons: Patrick Wayne (Wayne's real life son) and Christopher Mitchum (the son of Robert Mitchum). Great movie loaded with great Hollywood stars.

That would cause me great annoyance and displeasure." and Richard Boone replies "Mister, that just scares the hell out of me...the thought that you might be annoyed." I'm happy to finally see someone react to one of my favorite John Wayne movies. It hits hard that the movie was a parallel of John's own impending end by cancer. Ron Howard's slow walk down the street at the end always makes me misty.
The Shootist is one of my favorite Westerns. It has so many actors from TV and movies too. Great Pic, Joob!

1976 was a great year for westerns besides The Shootist. We also got The Outlaw Josey Wales, From NoonTill Three and The Return of a Man Called Horse.

I love John Wayne in this movie; especially the part where he sticks his gun in the reporters mouth and tells him Mrs Rogers is gonna be scrubbing his brains off the wallpaper. 😆😆
The actress playing Mrs. Rogers is Lauren Bacall, a legendary Hollywood star.
Ironically, he spent the last twenty years of his life with only one lung. He had one with cancer and had it cut out. He still managed to do some very hard roles with only one lung, including the masterpiece movie, The Green Berets!! Special Forces unit in Vietnam!!
This movie and Pale Rider our two of the best Westerns ever made.
I'm so happy that you're doing "the shootist" movie!!! You're the first person I've seen do this movie. John Wayne was one of my all time favorite actors and one I've looked up to. I was only 11 when he passed away but still remember it. Was so sad. I don't know if you recognize the "boy" in this movie.... it's Ron Howard who was in Andy Griffith and directed many movies over the years. Even his daughter has been in Jurassic World movies....
And she was in Spider-Man 3 as Gwen Stacy!!
The Quiet Man, The Searchers are a few of my favorite Wayne films, this was iconic as his last and one of only 2 movies he died in :/ Thank you @MovieJoob for seeing out the classics and showing them for your younger subs and fans to see the classic iconic films both black and white and color. Jade, That lady that you like a lot is Lauren Bacall. She was huge back in the 1940's and became the wife of Humphrey Bogart. They did several movies together that you might want to check out: Let's see....Dark Passage, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep and Key Largo.

I would also add that the young man playing Gillom did an adequate job. His name is Ron Howard - the go-to child actor in the 60's and 70's who later produced and/or directed a couple of movies that did okay at the box office which you might have heard of. "Apollo 13" was one of them.
Ron Howard started on the sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, Happy Days and one of many movies, American Graffiti.

There are many good trivia bits about The Shootist, well worth looking up. It's a shame it didn't do well in the theaters and the critics, mostly, didn't like it. I always see this movie as a heartfelt Thank You to John Wayne for his lifetime of entertainment. Thank you for spending the time with us and one of our favorite film legends in his last movie.

Excellent reaction, as always!👏 May I offer some suggestions? 1. Since you liked Lauren Bacall so much, take a look at To Have and Have Not, from1944, when she was 30 years younger. She's quite captivating, even sings a song, and the movie is great. 2. Give yourself a treat and watch more of John Wayne's best films, especially those directed by John Ford, such as Stagecoach (1939) or They Were Expendable (1945) or The Searchers (1956). You can't go wrong with any of those!

John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, Harry Morgan as the town marshal, Scatman Crothers as Moses, John Carradine as the undertaker, and Richard Boone as Sweeney, all legends. Wayne, Stewart, and Carradine all appeared in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Wayne and Boone appeared in Big Jake, which also featured Wayne's real life son, Patrick, playing Wayne's character's son. One of Richard Boone's best known roles was the lead character in a TV Western series Have Gun - Will Travel. Ron Howard got his start as a child actor in the sit com The Andy Griffith Show, playing Andy's son, Opie. He was in another big TV sit com Happy Days, playing Ritchie Cunningham. He was also cast in the movie American Graffiti as Steve. Lauren Bacall is as big a legend as Stewart and Wayne, first appearing with Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not. Bacall and Bogart fell in love while making this and later married. This was Bacall's first movie, and would end up making 3 other movies with Bogart, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and Key Largo. Bacall first appeared with Wayne in the movie Blood Alley. John Carradine first appeared with Wayne in Wayne's first starring role in the movie Stagecoach. Carradine is another legend of Hollywood, along with the Carradine family. His son, Robert, also appeared in a movie with Wayne, called The Cowboys. Harry Morgan was a legendary character actor, who was best known for his roles of Detective Bill Gannon in the TV crime drama series Dragnet and as Col. Sherman Potter in the sit com M*A*S*H. He also appeared with Wayne in the Western, How The West Was Won, and with Stewart in Stategic Air Command. Two Western comedies he appeared in were Support Your Local Sherrif and Support your Local Gunfighter. Scatman Crothers was an epic character actor, musician, and voice actor.

This was John Wayne's last movie and one of the first to deal with cancer.
Next, "The Cowboys" 1972.
Both of my parents went at the time of their choosing. Mom was 23 years ago, from ALS, and Dad about 6 years ago, from tongue cancer. They both chose the palliative care route. One thing i liked about this movie was how they incorporated scenes from Wayne's early movies in the telling of his life. Wayne was actually dying from cancer at the time.
A great reaction, MJ. It's very gratifying to find young people who can appreciate movies from way back. After watching John Wayne's last movie, you might want to flip back and watch the first film when The Duke broke through as a major star - STAGECOACH from 1939, directed by the great John Ford. Even after 85 years it's still one of the best westerns/movies ever made IMHO. For a Wayne movie that's a lot of fun try RIO BRAVO from 1959.
"Blood Alley" is a good John Wayne and Lauren Becall film too. Their first movie together I think. That first bad guy Wayne shot was a good actor playing a villain in many John Wayne films and talked about how Wayne called him to be in this film and gave a background about doing this last bad guy role with Wayne. Great reaction!
17:06 - I'm pretty sure that guy played in "Big Jake" with John Wayne.
And I think he was the star of the old western show, "Have Gun, Will Travel". I've been listening to the old radio drama version of that show. Radio dramas are my favorite newish discovery. I watch and listen to a ton of podcasts and streams, but I somehow didn't know about a lot of the great radio dramas that exist.
You're right on all counts. Richard Boone, Paladin in "Have Gun, Will Travel" on TV in the 50s and then notable for many bad guy roles including Big Jake (as you noted), Grimes in the Paul Newman film, "Hombre," and Frank Usher in "The Tall T" a Randolph Scott western. He also played Hec Ramsey on TV in the early 70s.
Greatest swan song for an actor in film history. Lauren Bacall as Mrs. Rogers is so effective I think because she's reliving her own experience watching her husband Humphrey Bogart dying of cancer.
The Man Who Killed Liberty Vance is another excellent John Wayne movie that costars Jimmy Stewart!
Lauren Bacall plays the part of Mrs. Bond Rogers. She was iconic in Hollywood in her own right. Her first role was opposite her future husband Humphrey Bogart in "To Have and Have Not" in 1944.
I think all of Hollywood knew this would be the Dukes last film because most of the supporting cast were Hollywood icons themselves. In fact Gillom Rogers is Ron Howard who was famous as a child on "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960-1968) and is still on the "A" list as one of the best directors in the business.

Gillam gets away with gunning down the bartender with Books gun, because everyone assumes Books shot him as he was dying. there were no witnesses inside. Maybe Doc guesses but stays quiet.
The film has an excellent and famous cast; most of them have had numerous appearances in Westerns. Mrs. Rogers is played by Lauren Bacall, aka Mrs. Humphrey Bogart, and is well-known for her voice.

A great movie and great reaction. John Wayne made some terrific westerns, for sure, as many have mentioned. One of my favorites is The Searchers. Another great western. This sadly was the last movie The Duke made. A true legend. The world was a different place when he died 3 yrs after this movie. His last appearance at the Academy Awards broke my heart, he was a shadow of the big bear of a man he was. There will never be an icon like him again, sadly.
The brown haired shooter guy was also an old western star, last movie I saw him in was Mel Gibson movie, Maverick. He put a bunch of old western stars in it, including his partner from Lethal Weapon!😮😮😮

Harry Morgan was in a lot of famous Westerns too. High Noon, Support You Local Sheriff, Bend of the River w/ Jimmy Stewart, The Far Country w/ Stewart, The Ox-Bow Incident, How the West was Won etc. etc.

A great movie from an actor that lived that life on screen (as shown in the opening). A good example of ‘Today is a good day to die’.
Hugh O’Brian was also the youngest Drill Instructor in the history of the Marine Corps.
John Carradine also has a long list of movies and hid son David Carradine had the tv series Kung Fu.
