  • Surgery day has finally arrived for conjoined twins Abigail and Micaela's separation. More than 30 team members crowd the operating room for the marathon procedure to separate the girls, who are attached at the head. The twins’ shared anatomy complicates the anesthesia. Surgeons make a surprise discovery and must make a tough call. The twins’ mother is joined by a supportive crowd as she waits outside the hospital, praying for good news.

I remember seeing on instagram their aunt posting about them being born as conjoined twins. Seeing their mom talk about the upcoming surgery made me worried and I wished the surgery was successful. I remember over 2 years back learning that the surgery would be very difficult and take 24 hours. But then I saw that they were successfully separated. Whenever their aunt or mom posted them, years later, I’m still in awe of these miracle girls. Although I personally don’t know them, I am very happy the God blessed them and the hands of all the doctors who performed the surgery. Thank you to each and every one of the medical staff in that surgery room! Glory be to Jesus Christ!

Seperation surgeries like these are probably one of the most complex and difficult surgeries out there, especially cranial separation. When I was in high school one of my teachers actually heard back from these famously separated twins who were separated at the side, now adults. The one who wrote back is now less than 5 feet tall as an adult and has to use a catheter, along with other medical problems but she still became a successful pharmacist. The other twin we didn't hear back from but she was the smaller one out of them, and I'm going to assume she has even more health issues than her sister. Sadly, I think there's always going to some kind of repricussion with seperation surgery, even with how far we've come in the medical world. Thats how difficult this kind of stuff is. I hope for the best with these little girls.
