    I'm trying to find a straightforward answer and have watched literally hundreds of different YT videos. I am trying to find a recommendation for food for my 8 week old australian shepherd puppy. Please please can you recommend just a couple of specific foods or do a top 10 recommended video or something of that nature?

      Relax! You have lots of options for z as dog that size. I would have no concerns feeding Science Diet Purina ProPlan, Nutro , Iams, Fromm. The real differences in nutrition start when they’re adults. If a puppy food doesn’t seem to agree with them, try another. Doesn’t mean that food was bad but just not for your pup. Stop watching videos of people trying to sell you something! 👍

      @@warrenhorowitz-vp6ul there’s usually very little difference. Large Breed Puppy was researched for years (thanks to Hills and RC) and has a very valid role. Of course the marketing people saw the opportunity of more foods for large breeds. Sure, you can add more energy in a small breed or more glucosamine in a senior but not really very significant. At least I never saw anything substantial

      I have a 10 week old Bull Terrier and the vet recommended large breed puppy food due to the build of the breed despite only growing to around 50 pounds. We tried science diet but she doesn’t like it. I can’t figure out if the larger kibble size is the problem or if it’s the taste. For a breed that doesn’t really fit the definition of large breed, is a large breed puppy food going to make a big difference vs a regular puppy food?

      Yes, in the 80s and 90s RC, Hills and Purina were looking at research or doing their own. I find with most innovations the big three seem to be trying to keep up with each other. I consider that a good thing!

      @@George.J I must admit I had fun calling it the Anal Diet in my clinics but I have seen it work. They actually use chicken feathers! Talk about by products! But that’s the difference between real nutrition science and appealing ingredients. I am not thrilled with the nutrient levels for older dogs but if it’s the only thing that works, what can you do. So the dog reacted to RCs HP Diet but not the Ultamino. Interesting.

    Do you think Purina one small breed adult dog food is a good choice to feed? I’ve heard so many people say it’s a crap food get grain free foods only from side pet shops and only if it’s human grade and I just can’t afford that stuff anymore it gets so expensive. I heard Purina actually does feeding trials so their food is safe and nutritious. Is that true? Is it a good food? I just want what’s best for my pups without breaking my wallet

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  Год назад +2

      People who work in pet food stores are retailers. The glitz and glamour and marketing is a lot more fun and easy to manipulate customers than talking clinical nutrition! It’s just so easy! And many of these folks are very dedicated and sincere but only know what they’re told. Purina is in no way crap and your dog would do fine in it. Grain Free is pure marketing with absolutely no scientific basis. There is some concern with a great issue called cardiomyopathy feeding grain free foods but nothing has been confirmed. But again, to reason to do it! Yes, Hills and Purina do feeding trails and have been formulating diets for decades. If you find your dog not doing well on a food it doesn’t mean that food is crap. Just like us, our systems have unique differences and needs. Good luck!

      Jaime, I would expect very little difference in those three. And like I say in the video, any excesses would not be very harmful for a growing puppy and they are only on the diet for a year or so. If the puppy eats it and is doing well, I’d feel confident with any of those three. Maybe compare price!

      My part time job is Tractor supply. Been there almost 3 years. We have training on feed minimum once a year. Depending on your breed and how much protein and fat is based on how active your dog is. Purina pro plan and science diet is the best in my opinion. Grain free is super expensive but dogs actually need grain for digestion.

    Hi there. I’m still confused about what to look for to know if I’m buying the best food for my dog. You’ve seemed to say to buy the right food for your dog’s life stage and whether or not they are a large or small breed, and you’ve mentioned calories and minerals but what are the correct ranges to look for? What percentage of protein, fat, carbs am I looking for? I can’t seem to find that in your videos but I may have missed it. Do you have a list of dog foods you recommend or have an opinion on the Dog Food Advisor website where foods are rated?

    • @edschulhof6303
      @edschulhof6303 Год назад +1

      AnimalDocRea shows a chart of ranges on all of her dog food reviews. Example for large breed puppy: calcium 0.7 to 1.2%. Phosphorus: 0.6 to 1.1%

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  Год назад +2

      Hey Kelli! Ed beat me to it but Dr Rea dies list the ranges. A few points though. Those ranges are very wide, a bit wide for me but at least they are something to go by. I just got off the phone with Pedigree and Iams for my next video and unfortunately you need to call the companies to get actual numbers. A real pain! And they always want to give you percentages and grams or mg per 100 calories is best when comparing. A quick glance on the bag to see if it is All Life Stages is a quick way to disqualify many foods. It means the nutrients are high enough for puppies so too high for an adult dog. Btw, after puppyhood I find no real nutritional reason for Large Breed Adult or Senior, but companies sell more food having more varieties. My main purpose is to help pet parents realize most of the marketing they look at and the money they spend is. It really accurate to the ingredient panel.

      My opinion on Dog Food Advisor…. Total waste of time. The dentist who started it should have talked with a few board certified nutritionists. Here’s an analogy that kind of works. You look at all the parts of an airplane spread out on the ground in front of you. You pick up a little part. Well, it can’t fly so it shouldn’t be included in the building of this plane. You pick up a big part but again, it can’t fly so you decide it’s useless or at least inferior. Dog Food Advisor looks at individual ingredients and determines individually which ones are winners, which ones are losers, but they have no idea how a real nutritionist will pick and choose ingredients that work together synergistically to produce a diet with optimal nutrients. This is especially important with therapeutic nutrition. The airplane fly’s because all the parts needed are put together by engineers. You could give me all the parts and I couldn’t make a lawn mower. Same way having all the ingredients won’t make a great diet without a nutritionist putting it together! Wow! I should make a short on that! Lol!
