When I was twelve I heard some thunder in the distance, so I went outside to bring something in that I left out under a pine tree in the yard. All of a sudden lightning struck the tree just a few feet in front of me, the one I was walking to. There was an extremely loud boom that left my ears ringing. I felt the ground shake violently and it knocked me down. I don't recall seeing any arc or flames. It was more like something exploded in the ground at the base of the tree while bark was ripped off the tree in a spiral pattern from the top down. Wood, bark and dirt rained down on me. The thing I remember most was the heat wave that hit me a few seconds later. The air was really, really hot for a moment. If I had to guess I'd say it was 150 degrees F. A long time ago now a tree near where I lived was hit by a lightning, it was a very old tree and very large. There was also a spiral pattern to the way the bark was knocked of the tree. There was a strip maybe four inches wide that curved down and around the tree and in the very center of that strip was a cut as if someone had dragged a blade down and into the wood. Maybe that was the center of the energy that passed down the tree? I've seen that only once but it sounds like something similar happened to the tree you were near.
