Yes I think they have good intentions but some of their answers showed that although they’re “leftists” they’re clearly not informed on or don’t acknowledge the whole other reality experienced by people (their own fans) in countries outside of Canada and the US... This is not to shit on them, I like them and enjoy their content a lot, and they’re clearly miles ahead from other youtubers of course, but I guess some answers just really rubbed me the wrong way : (
@@ami5marion agree 100%! most people in north america and europe are just misinformed (or not informed at all) about the global south in general and it's not always their individual fault, as we know Ben and Cristine are highly educated and still have this gap. I love their content too and they're a breath of fresh air, intelligence and maturity on mainstream youtube, but no one is perfect. and I'm sure they'd be open to learn about this, which matters more than knowing everything!
Living in the US, when I hear the term "Savages" vs "Civilized" it's hard to detach that from colonization. I agree with what you're saying Ben - there should be a baseline of human rights standards regardless of culture. But because of the specificity of those terms, my reading of that question is quite different!
@That One but here’s the thing. There are child marriages in parts of America. They have the death penalty some could see that as savage I think too often civilised is related to western civilisation but it’s wrong to believe that they simply do not happen or are not legal in western civilisation
I feel like the question lost all credibility at the word 'savages'. You can be strongly against certain practices or customs without calling the entire culture 'savages'. Basically don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Just work to educate (or even legislate) against the specific practices.
For the statement "It's natural for children to keep some secrets from their parents." My parents have looked through my phone and come in my room without knocking and I have just become better at hiding things from them and I don't feel like I can talk to them without getting a lecture. It feels like my parents don't really know me. Strict parents makes sneaky kids.
I was the same way when I was a child! I am not a parent but do think it’s important to make sure the punishment fits the crime. I think most people will come to terms with a punishment if it seems fair or fitting.
I'm sorry about that. My parents always used to tell me "It's okay to keep secrets but if a secret is hurtful or makes you feel bad or scared it's better to tell it to us so we might be able to help". I always thought that was a good approach. It helped me a lot when I was younger and was bullied at school. Cause I felt like I didn't have to keep that a secret from my parents.
As someone from a northern European country, I was so suprised how many of these questions are based on things that are non issues here and don’t show up on our political compasses. Just stuff I don’t think about. Very fascinating and made the slightly left leaning person here strongly leftist on this compass 😅
Mmmh the test is more of a global compass. A countries political spectrum is usually not as broad as this test thats why you are a centrist more easy if you don't have any strong opinions. On the test I am far left and libertarian, while on the Austrian spectrum I am far more in the middle, especially economic- wise.
Yes, I'm from Germany and that's why I don't understand how Americans view Bernie sanders as extremely leftist when parts of his ideas are standard in germany
G. I mean given how outspoken and true to herself Cristine is in her videos and they’ve alluded to in previous podcasts I don’t think there’s anything absolutely mind blowing being revealed here. But given how volatile the political sphere has become lately I see where you’re coming from in this being a controversial topic.
I think many of Canada's more right leaning politicians are still left of American right wing politicians. But we are not a two party system we have 4-5 national parties. I think people are also often more fluid in their political leanings in Canada, not many people I know are "life long" supporters of a party. But I live in BC in the lower Mainland which is basically the California (politically and in kale consumption and veganism) of Canada, so perhaps I shouldn't speak for all Canadians.
I really respect them but I think it’s also down to how confident they are that they are ‘moral’ (with all that subjectivity) people and don’t have any oppressive or hate filled opinions that they are trying to mask for the sake of saving face with this demographic. Like you can tell when someone is trying really really hard to dance around what they actually think and you can see here with cris and ben that their only concern is portraying their thoughts cleanly and correctly. They’re honestly blessings to RUclips (not that we should massively idealise people only showing you what they want you to see).
As an American I 100% crave conversations like this. I'm so bottled up because I know people here can't be civil. Not because I'm generalizating but because I've seen it. People say "we can be civil" and not 5 minutes later are screaming insults. I really want this type of dialog where one can even bring up tougher points like Ben does. Like "yes overall but in a case like XYZ no because thats not good"
@@sierralizotte3084 I know what you mean. I personally like to hear other people's opinions on different topics than say my opinion on it without bashing the other people's opinions. Some Americans need to grow up
I don’t know about anybody else but I’ve been enjoying this podcast even more than the regular channel which is saying A LOT cause I love simplynailogical
Same, I love nailogical content but ben and cristine getting to chat like adults about super interesting topics turned out to be everything I didn’t know I wanted/needed.
I don’t know if I enjoy it more than main channel, they’re kind of in separate groupings for me. But I really really enjoy getting to hear them just talk and discuss things openly
He doesn't say how people should vote, he says how he feels about people voting for Trump. Telling hot to vote is "You should/should not vote this way". When people talk about their feelings, they talk about their feelings, they don't ask other to do their bidding. Well, unless those others had, say, childhood family where there was a lot of indirect requests and emotional manipulation
@@nathanliteroy9835 some people now think that an expression of opinion = an instruction on other people's action. Eg they think my saying 'i like the colour red' means 'i think everyone should prefer red and other colours stink' ... Sigh
For the question about plants in developing countries. Some companies go around looking for small farming communities in developing countries with crops that are resistant to certain insects or diseases. The company genetically sequences the DNA to identify the genes that create the resistance. Then they patent those genes and turn around and sue the communities that are growing crops with their patented DNA to take a portion of their profits.
Mining companies also come to mind, I have family near a few Canadian-owned mines in small Mexican towns, and there have been some absolutely horrible disasters caused by the greed of the companies, because the people and the town is just an afterthought, and they only care about the getting the product out, and workers and their families are expendable.
I would like to see a segue-off where they compete to see who can slip in segues fro sponsors the best/sneakiest. (If Jenna comes back, I would also like her and Cristine to get together to watch hair braiding tutorials and practice on themselves or each other)
The question about corporations exploiting the genetic resources of cultures refers to companies like Monsanto going into places like a rural village in Mexico and patenting the maize they have spent centuries selectively farming in that region and then the company buys the rights, takes the profits from the small village, and then sells the seeds back to the people to even be able to legally grow the crop. I learned about this in a college class last year and its really interesting and upsetting.
On top of that the seeds they sell back have been modified so the next generation of seeds to grow are infertile and they then cannot be replanted and the village has to spend their small profits buying more seeds
MONSANTO is the worst and it's amazing that they're still running. Shows that the institutions that were created to protect human rights are really just symbolic
One of my undergraduate course is about bioethical and this is the main unethical example. And then, my friend was sent to a developed country for a research (she came up with the idea and genetic sample) and her research was now owned by that developed country..do we even learn?
@@Bimtavdesign Actually Monsanto no longer exists. They were bought by Bayer in 2018 and then they got rid of the name and sold off most of their agricultural assets.
In Belgium, voting is mandatory as of 18 (when you’re an adult). Elections are planned on saturdays so (most) people will have the day off anyway. You also get a note about a month in advance telling you where your voting office is. Belgium is obviously a tiny country, so people won’t be traveling for 2 hours to get to the voting place... You have the option to vote “blank” if you don’t have a political opinion, or a preference on the available options. As always, the system is not ideal. But I think it’s better than what I hear from other countries...
This is similar to New Zealand. Our election is in a few weeks. They're on Saturdays, and there's multiple locations in your area to vote (I would say in my town, roughly 10 in a 15 minute radius). We dont have a blank option however.
Ana Sofia ParraG I imagine NZ works the same as Australia where here we also don’t have a blank option, but it’s totally fine to submit an empty or spoiled ballot
I like that you guys mentioned the idea of universal basic income in regards to people in artistic pursuits that may not be providing livable wages. As an illustrator and comic creator, I do not make enough to live, but obviously, I think storytelling, art, and entertainment are important things that benefit society and have intrinsic value, even if surveys say that "artists are nonessential." I think of all the people stuck at home during quarantine with nothing to fill their time except for media and how they rely on some form of art to keep them sane and well.
And in the usa with how fast things are being automated and how many jobs will be lost, I think Universal Basic Income is an interesting idea. Andrew Yang was running for president with UBI as one of his main policies
I support living wages and just a baseline standard of human care regardless of any level of income, including none. Everyone should have an education, healthcare, shelter, toilet paper, and food. Regardless of if they do anything or not.
@Nicole Adenegha I don't think you should pay for it, but billionaires on the other hand...lol. nobody needs 3 mansions or 10 luxury cars when people die, every day, because they're afraid they can't afford an ambulance. Like wtf?! Nobody should go hungry or homeless because the path they chose led them, or the things they encounter on that path, to a situation like that. Nobody really knows how much choice someone really had. They didn't choose their parents, their upbringing, economic status, or trauma. Not everyone gets the same opportunities or abilities. It's not like we all get a baseline starter kit for life then go on to face the same battles. Life is not that black and white. Some people are just so selfish and because I didn't grow up in their shoes, I don't understand it. I only know my own experiences have led me to take a more compassionate view than your own.
i took this test back in 2015 when i was in my first year at university then again during the end of senior year and the difference was really interesting. this is why i think secondary education is a life-changing experience, quite literally lol. and i hope a lot of people find ways to continue learning, gaining knowledge, and getting educated. especially if they have the capacity to go to college.
I also took it in 2015 ! My position didn't change much but some questions have evolved. I may be mistaken but I don't remember obama being on that quarter... I remember him being placed very center on the two axis but left and liberal by a little

I know someone who did the "I'll just live on welfare and have tons of free time!" thing. They were bored out of their mind after half a year and got a job again (this time one they actually liked). I think a UBI would people give a chance to 1) take a break from work due to mental health (plus the amount of vacation days you get from some companies sucks), 2) stop having to have more than one job to achieve a livable overall wage, 3) accept work they actually really want to do but can't because of low pay. I doubt that most folks would just do nothing. Worst case scenario, you get a lot of people who help out with random things (carrying groceries home, trimming hedges, that kinda stuff) because they have nothing to do besides socializing.
Re: “the percentages you have to pay [in taxes] after you make a certain amount of income,” I think it is SO important to acknowledge that you’re only paying that percentage on the money you make after the last bracket cutoff - i.e. if you are taxed 15% on $50,000 of taxable income, and 20% on $100,000 of taxable income, you’d pay 15% of the first $50,000 ($0-$50,000) and 20% of the second $50,000 ($50,000-$100,000), not 20% on the whole $100,000 ($0-$100,000). So, if you’re paying 35% tax on $200,000 taxable income, only your profits exceeding $200,000 are taxed at 35%. Any money you make between $150,000-$200,000 is taxed at 30%, any money you make between $100,000-$150,000 is taxed at 25%, and back to the beginning, all money made between $50,000-$100,000 is taxed at 20%. A lot of people don’t take this into account because it isn’t taught in school and I think everyone should know this ! ! !

School should prepare people to be good citizens. That includes being employable, but able to participate in a democracy, to consume media critically, to be able to learn and think. So many jobs that exist now were unimaginable when I was in school, how could I have been prepared for a world where instagram influencer is a job? (I am a teacher librarian btw)
I agree, they need to be prepared for more than just one specific job. For example in this recent pandemic, a basic science education helps to understand it even if your job has nothing to do with science. And not just teaching the subjects, but teaching people HOW to learn and how to reason things out. A basic grounding the PROCESS of critical thinking helps people to not be vulnerable to scams, propaganda, etc.

The land question seems illogical at first considering the current state of society but when you think about it, indigenous people lived like that very successfully for centuries until the land was colonized
Yes, thank you. As a Native American I wish people were more educated on this topic. Before colonization, land was not a commodity to be bought and sold.
@@JackieBurkhart924 I got a little saddened by the response they gave to that question. It just reminded me of how Canada is currently stealing land from Canadian indigenous and how they see it as a profit

But like obviously, they person wanting to buy the land shouldn’t use force or threaten but if a general person wants to get land but doesn’t own any then how do they go about it?? YES i was thinking this that the medical standard should absolutely be high universally but i think from them using the example of "having your blood taken in a private room" their mind went to fancy customer servicey hospital care that's like very private rooms, extra lunch options and ambience etc (we have a wing in the private hospital called the "vip wing" that's basically that and public personalities go there especially)

Germany actually has a hybrid health care system, where no one (with a permanent residence in Germany) can be turned down by the public health care, but there is also private health care wich you have to choose, when you're making more than a certain amount of money or you are self employed. With private health care you have access to private rooms in hospitals, but the downside of the system is that doctors make more money on private patients so they might give them an earlier appointment
Same, but not the same, with Brazil. You don't have to be a permanent resident in Brazil to have acess to the health care system. It's not perfect, but it works. If you're more of a middle class, and you don't want to use the public health care, you can have a insurance, but if you're really wealthy, you can go private. It's a mess, but works.
Canada really needs a hybrid health care system. It will retain more Canadian doctors and also help to subsidize the public healthcare system. Many Canadian trained doctors, especially specialists, move to the US after finishing their residency since the pay is so much better. I'm not sure if people know this, but American hospitals actively come to Canada to recruit specialists which is why the wait time in Canada to see a specialist is so long. Also, people who are not willing to wait bring their money elsewhere to pay to see a specialist, that money could have been kept in Canada.

The thing about land being bought and sold is, what happens when rich people buy most of the land so there's a lot of empty land but also many homeless people or people in tiny apartments that can barely afford to pay rent? I guess there could be limits to how much land can be bought but the people who have the most money and who would lose out from such a limit are the ones in control of the govt or have a lot of influence so that'll never happen.

Sometimes, as an American, I hear stories like this, about fellow Americans going abroad and saying some ignorant bullshit and all I can wonder is, "Can only morons afford to travel?" Edit: typo
I think some Americans just want to have smalltalk. They want to appear smart but they are just getting it very wrong. Maybe they saw jokes or satire and took it for real pictures of Canada. Some Americans talk like 6 year old kids for all their life. They just got no education. We were in Los Angeles at the beach and some American guy approached us. My friend said she was from Switzerland and he said oh, they have very nice beaches there. Well, there is hardly any country farther away from beaches than Switzerland. We burst out laughing and that was it. He left. Poor guy.
Same thing happened to me once i was going to Florida by car with my family and we had to get towed and the person that drove us thought we lived in igloos LOL i was legit 13 and it gave me an unfortunate bad opinion of the US in terms of education.
No hate, just wanting to educate: So the question about savages: As Canadians, you all are taught a very Eurocentric education, just as the U.S. is. The biggest issue with Ben’s response is that the term “savage” has historically referred to “Non-Europeanness” people. It’s an inherently bad term to describe mostly African and indigenous people. The differing in cultures is how the term was even started, and accepting that some places aren’t as developed or even do practices you might not consider morally correct is how your ancestors created the word “savage” to begin with.
This is a very insightful and constructive comment. There’s also an inherent paternalism associated with the term: he who is “other”, who is “savage” is unable to care for himself or decide his own destiny. It’s led to forced kidnappings in Canada from Jacques Cartier to the residential school system, to government oversight over every aspect of indigenous peoples’ lives as if they are too simple, too savage, to uncivilized to care for themselves.
@missheniki also, I think that groups of people can be categorized as "Savages" even in the most develop nations, I wouldn't call any group of people savages, but by Ben's definition some groups like the Westboro Baptist Church is defeinitely a group that falls into that, and I would absolutely call uncivilized.

A thought about the "is it natural for kids to keep secrets" question. When I read the question, I was thinking about it more like a nature vs. nurture issue. I think that kids learn not to tell their parents everything (especially in situations with more controlling, authoritarian parents) because they get a poor reaction. When kids are very young, they will tell everyone everything, no matter how trivial.
Lol when I was 5, I straight up showed my mom a Barbie dress I stole from my piano teacher's daughter and was like Isn't it pretty?!?! Obviously my mom knew she hadn't bought it for me and I got the whooping of a life time.

I find this so interesting. I live in US south. I have a degree in history and I hear some of these questions at least in some of the wording like the "other cultures" or "savages" questions I automatically thought of "manifest destiny and taming the savages" through, especially US history and religious history. But I loved listening to both of your opinions from a sociological perspective
i think you two involuntarily influenced each other. it would be interesting to see how you would have answered individually without being able to discuss it
"One of my grandmas shouldn't be voting" Hard same Cristine Probably a TERRIBLE podcast idea but I think the topic of aging and freedom is interesting. There are effectively almost no laws in the US (don't know about other countries) to determine whether or not aging has impacted your competency to do something. There is an assumption that young people have not attained the mental capacity to engage in voting- despite the fact minors often earn wages. But there is no assumption on the other end of the age spectrum. A more prevalent and perhaps relevant is driving. Young teens are not allowed to drive because of "impulsivity" but older individuals don't have to prove that their natural age diminished reaction times don't present a road hazard. And older drivers frequently cause accidents that are fatal to themselves and others.
After turning 80 every two years a person has to take a written test and vision test to keep their licence. I don’t see the difference with voting honestly. Maybe people over the age of 80 should have to do a competence test to see if they are in the right mind to be voting
Wonderful point. I'd also like to mention, however, that laws regarding driving in the US vary by state. Many states require that seniors renew their driver's licenses more frequently, and require additional steps. For example, in Illinois, drivers over 75 must renew their driver's licenses in person and must pass a written exam and driving exam, along with an eyesight exam in order to receive their license. Drivers over 87 must renew their licenses every year.
I would be interested in this as an age podcast in general. Voting at 18 deciding our country's future but can't have a glass of wine after work. Can die in war at 18 but cant drink a beer with friends because the brain is not fully developed... seems like a backward thought process. And of course the how old is too old to do things like drive a car because your reaction time is so slow. And especially in states like Florida where I live where we have a high population of elder people, how would that affect our economy... of course there are always exceptions, 98 yo marathon runners and 15 yo prodigies...
I "played along" and received similar scores to your guys' (Economic Left/Right: -4.5 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.46). Explains why I absolutely love listening to both of you talk about issues, because I usually tend to feel the same way lol
I also want to point out you can be a "measured" person and still be far left. Being measured doesn't mean you can't find value in / agree with the philopshy of Karl Marx or Noam Chomsky.

I’m right there with you. I suffer with anxiety and during my GCSES I struggled with agoraphobia. The corridors in school where chaotic and awful! Fortunately lockdown benefited me really well. Taking a break from social media, friends, exams and just general life was so beneficial for me. I’ll still be crazy and nothing will ever be 100% but my thoughts are genuinely with you. I really hope things get easier for you, and it becomes more manageable. Do you have any coping strategies? Xx
I wonder if you talk to your teachers about possible leaving class a few minutes early so you can avoid the business of the hallways? Or perhaps arriving a minute or two late to class? I know a lot of teachers don't care about helping their students, so I truly hope you are able to find a solution that works for you and your teachers. I wish you all the best ❤️
Side note, this may be more intimidating than the hallways lol. Most teachers have emails on the faculty/school board website! It might be worthwhile to look into if you think it could be beneficial
I live in Australia and have been voting since I was 18 , while it’s is illegal not to vote, if you haven’t enrolled to vote yet they can’t fine you. But there are tons of ways they encourage you to enroll to vote (I got a birthday card from my local member that was obviously mass sent to all new 18 year olds). And it’s not hard to vote, federal elections are always on Saturday’s, and if you work like I did at a cafe on weekends you can either vote by mail or go to an early voting centre, where you only need to give your name and address to vote. Also it’s pretty easy to apply for exemptions if your traveling and unable to vote so you don’t get fined, and if you are fined you can try to contest it if you have a valid excuse.
It's also important to note in Australia it's not a requirement to vote, it's a requirement to have your name marked off the electoral roll and be handed ballot papers. You can put those papers in the boxes blank. I like our system though. As a result a lot of effort goes into ensuring people have access to voting, including televoting for those who are vision impaired. Remote visiting teams in remote areas. Visits to hospitals and nursing homes. The electoral commissions also put in a lot of effort to education about voting. Because its compolsary you need to make sure ppl know what they are doing. That said - our political parties are far from perfect and it feels like people are largely discouraged from being actively involved in politics.
Another fellow Aussie here! You’ve forgotten the best part about voting..... YOU GO JUST FOR THE DEMOCRATIC SAUSAGE SIZZLE 🤤 it’s a close second behind the golden standard: the Bunnings sausage sizzle. So I completely agree with you both. It’s so easy to vote and early voting and mail voting is fantastic. Workplaces are flexible during elections to accommodate everyone as best as they can. I once lived in a remote town that had a couple of hundred people in it and everyone was still able to vote in person, despite being over 1000km away from a city. If you access social security, they will update your details on the electoral roll so it’s already done for you
The system of voting that Cristine was talking at the end, is exactly the way it is in many developing countries, like mine, Peru. You have a fine if you don't vote. There is like a 20 places to vote in 5 km around your house, you can choose were to vote. And finally, there is an option to vote to nobody and its on a sunday, the bussiness have to give you time to vote if you work that day.
Wow, this episode gave some really great insights into the minds of two pretty intelligent/considerate people. Your conversations are thought provoking, I'm inspired to look into criminology a little bit, to understand what goes on in my country and the world.
I love it when influencers approach politics, especially in a level minded approach like this. I wish more more would try to instead of running away from it.
20:10 Chief Seattle's Letter "The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them? Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people. We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family. The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father. The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother. If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers. Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth. This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. One thing we know: our God is also your God. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator. Your destiny is a mystery to us. What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? The wild horses tamed? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires? Where will the thicket be? Gone! Where will the eagle be? Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival. When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here? Will there be any of the spirit of my people left? We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us. As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land. This earth is precious to us. It is also precious to you. One thing we know - there is only one God. No man, be he Red man or White man, can be apart. We ARE all brothers after all."

Another kudos for mentioning the resources to help you with understanding your position on policies for elections! I myself am trying to understand politics and this quiz helped me realize what values/issues I should start with learning. Happy Taco Tuesday ❤
Cristine is always beautiful, but in this podcast she’s just really pretty. He doesn’t look as librarian as Cristine does, but he looks just as kind and comforting 💜 Love y’all!

My thought about eye for an eye is always when does it end. For example I kill someone. I am killed for killing someone. Who kills the person who killed me? Who kills the person who killed the person who kills me? This is still murder. It goes on forever.

Alia Y yes exactly! There is no detaching. It’s a racist term and people don’t quite understand that
@That One but here’s the thing. There are child marriages in parts of America. They have the death penalty some could see that as savage I think too often civilised is related to western civilisation but it’s wrong to believe that they simply do not happen or are not legal in western civilisation
Yes! I was just coming to say this, I interpreted it the same way!
Same, when I was taking the test I had a very different view point of that question
Strict parents makes sneaky kids.
how old are you
I was the same way when I was a child! I am not a parent but do think it’s important to make sure the punishment fits the crime. I think most people will come to terms with a punishment if it seems fair or fitting.
Yeah, my parents did that kind of thing.
Turns out it was abuse and I have to live the rest of my life dealing with that.
It was the same for me! My Mum searched my room and didn't trust me but Dad always respected my privacy.
Take a shot every time Cristine says she “doesn’t believe in the spirit of the question” Hahahaha

As someone from a northern European country, I was so suprised how many of these questions are based on things that are non issues here and don’t show up on our political compasses. Just stuff I don’t think about. Very fascinating and made the slightly left leaning person here strongly leftist on this compass 😅
Same. That struck me as well, especially as I'm British. British surveys pin me as a centrist, this test pins me as far-left.
Yeah, North American politics are pretty strongly skewed to the right, even though Canada seems left in comparison to the U.S. xP
Mmmh the test is more of a global compass. A countries political spectrum is usually not as broad as this test thats why you are a centrist more easy if you don't have any strong opinions. On the test I am far left and libertarian, while on the Austrian spectrum I am far more in the middle, especially economic- wise.
Micheal Canada is left relative to the US (who isn’t?) but they are still actually surprisingly right relative to Europe.
Yes, I'm from Germany and that's why I don't understand how Americans view Bernie sanders as extremely leftist when parts of his ideas are standard in germany
POV: you're following along on the quiz, waiting for Ben to explain all the economic questions
Dang this is pretty bold of them to do a podcast on this topic but I respect them for putting themselves out there like this
G. I mean given how outspoken and true to herself Cristine is in her videos and they’ve alluded to in previous podcasts I don’t think there’s anything absolutely mind blowing being revealed here. But given how volatile the political sphere has become lately I see where you’re coming from in this being a controversial topic.
They're canadians. Being on the left isnt that much a big deal here
I think many of Canada's more right leaning politicians are still left of American right wing politicians.
It's pretty well known what side of the political spectrum Cristine & Ben are on. That probably filtered out a lot of their audience.
Normalize talking about politics without getting mad at the person you're talking with
So many confused Americans.

Ben: I don't want to tell people how to vote. Also Ben: Voting for Trump is disgusting.
I agree with him, but it's still hilarious xD
From my point of view it was more of a jest to the Trump cult of personality voters.

Sounds like something a businessman will think off
Mining companies also come to mind, I have family near a few Canadian-owned mines in small Mexican towns, and there have been some absolutely horrible disasters caused by the greed of the companies, because the people and the town is just an afterthought, and they only care about the getting the product out, and workers and their families are expendable.

Corporations are messed up, their actions are the antithesis of what a healthy society needs... I reckon they should be taxed out of existence

Isabel Vanhove except for the fact that we still don’t have a government. That is not ideal.
This is similar to New Zealand. Our election is in a few weeks. They're on Saturdays, and there's multiple locations in your area to vote (I would say in my town, roughly 10 in a 15 minute radius). We dont have a blank option however.
@@caseyr1154 Not having a blank option is very weird to me, we have it in my country, Colombia, and I've always thought it was an universal right.

@@blackhare1346 I'm in the same boat. I really respect Yang, and I was sad to see his campaign cut short. What a promising candidate.

Like in the time of Native Americans mainly occupying North America, I imagine they were a less people and more space so it was a first come, first serve or maybe vote of some sort (Please correct me if I am wrong, I feel like I most likely am and I apologize) but now most land is heavily populated so how else can others plan to own if not through purchase??

Ben: 'you should lose your ability to vote at a certain age'
Me: *Cries in Brexit*
Is that what brexit was?!!
Miranda Stephens no what happened was all the old people who are going to die soon anyway decided to vote for Brexit while the young people who have to deal with the implications had to try to fight it (and so many who knew it was wrong but were just barely under the voting age had to scream powerlessly in horror) but because of voter apathy and people not thinking it would actually get passed, well it got passed.
@ the US with people thinking there's no way trump will win re-election. (Response bias means only the ones that care most will actually vote and therefore:) The old and the right are going to fight tooth and nail, VOTE PEOPLE!!
This all is ageist. You can’t decide they have less rights then you.
@@madkatt333 old people don't deserve voting rights
@@madkatt333 You could make the same argument that not allowing children to vote is ageism.
If a person is so old they will not have to live through the changes they bring on, I feel like it's important to question and discuss why they're given the ability to vote.
Maybe this is generational, as I'm older and graduated high school during a bad recession, but in high school, all our talks with the guidance counselor was "you want to have this career? Yeah, forget that, there are no jobs in that. Go into computers, that's the only place people will get work." That was frustrating because recessions come and go but you'll be in your chosen field for a long time.

As someone who is in need of specialized medical care that I already CANNOT afford, rich people don’t NOT have or deserve the right to receive “higher standards” of care. EVERYONE should be able to receive the best form of care no matter what they can afford 😤😞

Yes cristine got into the fact that “higher standards of care” is really wrong and that she strongly agrees no one should be able to pay for higher standards of care.

At least Germany has public healthcare. Polish public healthcare is dead..yet even private is not doing very well
Same in canada tho
Same in England (sort of)
Same, but not the same, with Brazil.

No hate, just wanting to educate:
So the question about savages:
As Canadians, you all are taught a very Eurocentric education, just as the U.S.
[Domingo Faustino Sarmiento intensifies]
I appreciate this take. I think you can criticize human rights violations without calling the entire culture/group of people 'savage'.
@missheniki also, I think that groups of people can be categorized as "Savages" even in the most develop nations, I wouldn't call any group of people savages, but by Ben's definition some groups like the Westboro Baptist Church is defeinitely a group that falls into that, and I would absolutely call uncivilized.
Also Indigenous Canadians are still mistreated by the Canadian Government to this day.

yees absolutely! i'm a brazilian but i assume anti-communist propaganda is that much stronger in north america (where said propaganda was born) and people are legitimately afraid of being associated with it. brazil has a lot of that too, when tbh i've read marx and engels and they're pretty reasonable
@@echastee it's from marx's work "critique of the gotha program" (it wasn't originally coined by him tho). he was explaining his two-phase system of establishing communism and that quote is the ✨fundamental principle✨ which "higher phase (stage 2) communism" is based on. it basically means that everyone contributes to society what they can and, due to the abundance the system creates, everyone takes from society what they need. from each according to their ✨ability✨, to each according to their ✨need✨.

When kids are very young, they will tell everyone everything, no matter how trivial.

Hard same Cristine
Probably a TERRIBLE podcast idea but I think the topic of aging and freedom is interesting.
💯 this
After turning 80 every two years a person has to take a written test and vision test to keep their licence.
@@phoebegerstenecker4420 thats wild! Does it seem to help with accident involving the elderly population?
I would be interested in this as an age podcast in general. Voting at 18 deciding our country's future but can't have a glass of wine after work. Can die in war at 18 but cant drink a beer with friends because the brain is not fully developed... seems like a backward thought process. And of course the how old is too old to do things like drive a car because your reaction time is so slow. And especially in states like Florida where I live where we have a high population of elder people, how would that affect our economy... of course there are always exceptions, 98 yo marathon runners and 15 yo prodigies...

If you access social security, they will update your details on the electoral roll so it’s already done for you
What would be a valid reason? Does it have to be something extreme like a dangerous injury or like being in a coma?
Btw: I love that you started doing time-stamps - even tho I‘m not one of those who uses them😇 bet it takes a lot more time to finish a video!
That's awesome!!

Chief Seattle's Letter
"The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land.

My thought about eye for an eye is always when does it end. For example I kill someone. I am killed for killing someone. Who kills the person who killed me? Who kills the person who killed the person who kills me? This is still murder. It goes on forever.
