    I feel for the young man who watched a scene from D.P. for the first time prior to his enlistment. D.P. was horrifying and traumatizing, but if it is sparking national discussion on how to reform the S.Korean military, then I'm glad it was made. Unfortunately, there are far too many similar situations in other environments (schools, fraternities, police/fire departments etc.) and countries where abuse and bullying need to be eliminated.

      This type of treatment creates weak soldiers, broken men, mean bosses, abusive husbands, distant, traumatized fathers, and a weak country. The original disinfectant is light. With this national conversation brought to the light, Korea has a the opportunity to strengthen it's soldiers, military, men, husbands, fathers, and all of society. Conscription is a great sacrifice and cost. Korea could use it as a great opportunity to make psychologically, emotionally, and physically healthy, balanced and cooperative men. It can change their entire society - home life, corporate culture, gender issues, birth rate, and abuse throughout society. God bless to all the young people of Korea, the future and most important asset of the country.

      I went to a boarding science academy for a couple of years. It was known to be very prestigious. But the truth is that those that lived comfortably in the hierarchy just turned a blind eye to the ruthless bullying. Watching DP was too intense for me because it reminded me of the worst periods of my life, where keeping silent is incentivized. 😔 Im truly surprised that people arent dismissing the drama considering how nationalistic Korea is known to be, but I’m so glad.

    I am Korean and I served in the military in 2000. At that time, it was a hell worse than a D.P drama. But now the military has changed a lot. Mobile phones were also allowed to be used freely, and the period of military service was shortened. It's improved a lot now, so it's not as severe as the drama

    My father would tell absolute horror stories of the things he had to go through. One incident was his superior, being all drunk, calling out his name because he was jealous of my father being in university while serving, using live ammunition ( this was back in the 1970's) and trying to actively kill him or hurt him with his m16 rifle. There were many more incidents like this but this was the most direct lethal against him.

    Since people are sharing their Dad’s experience of SK military service in the 1980s. After watching D.P together, my Dad shared that there were higher ups who would wake all the newly recruits or lower rank soldiers up at 2am in the morning all drunk and beat them until pulp every night - he was beaten too. And, a man who actually acted mentally disabled and bowed down to a rock every morning in order to end up serving down in Jejudo island where it’s less dangerous, he was beaten a lot too. My Dad commented that at one point he also felt so outraged by the bullying he wanted to shoot the ‘bullies’ and all and take his own life afterwards- I’m glad he didn’t or else I wouldn’t have been born 😔😢. I can only imagine how unfair it can be for those who are brutally bullied not only in military but overseas and elsewhere like schools, workplace, family, etc. and have gone through such injustice.

      normally, people think bullying as tough guy making fun of weaker guy or beat up right? but in military its like even if you are physically weak, but if you got a higher rank, you can bully lower ranks. even if you don't want to, others will force you to do it. and yeah it sucks

    • @Al4beef
      @Al4beef 2 года назад +2

      But does it make it better? Seems like it's normalized in Korean military. For example, in the USA military, bullying is a tool to break someone down but only to rebuild them up to better, stronger, more dependable person. It seems like the bully in the film want to only to destroy the person without opportunity to make them stronger. In fact, the bully's action will definitely warrant them to a military court and me punished. The US military is somewhat progressive in bully since it does reduce unit morale and efficacy.

    Every male in my family can relate to this film. They all served in the SK military and it's interesting to see the changes that have been made throughout the decades. My uncles and dad served in the 1970s-1980s where military service was 4 years long and hazing was probably at its peak and it was completely normal. They would get there asses beat and would hand down the ass beatings to the newer recruits as shown in the film. The bullies become the bullied. My older cousins served in the 90s and 2000s where the military service was then cut down to 3 years and they said things got a bit better when they would compare their services with their dads and by then, superiors were told to keep verbal and physical abuse to a minimum. My cousin witnessed two of his buddies commit suicide. One hung himself. And lastly, my younger cousins just finished their service. It's 2021 and service is now 1.5-2 years and I'm glad to say that they have pretty much banned most if not all the hazing. Thanks to technology, it's hard not to get caught hazing recruits. Thankfully my baby cousins never had to go through with it. As for me, the Canadian military is not at all bad when I compare it to the way soldiers were and are treated in the SK military.

    I liked how bold this drama was addressing this issue which for a long time has been a taboo subject. For all the cringey kdramas netflix has funded, they are doing a decent job diversifying with thrillers and "based on real life" dramas. The military has it's own law/court system and even classifies/hides a lot so seeing a drama like this out was refreshing. i still thought if we actually got to access classified stuff people would have mental breakdowns seeing what gets covered up. I'm not sure why there is shock or surprise that this happens unless it stems from people fetish-sizing a group, being generally naive and or expecting the SK gov't to block this from airing?.
    There isn't a military on this planet without these issues, what's worse is they aren't required to disclose all the things that happen, people die in "routine training exercises" or "drills", most of the time it's code for "we can't tell you the truth". Families are made to sign NDAs, it's rare and difficult for stories such as the one this drama is based on to come out publicly. In a few years, they'll do a drama/movie that will showcase the challenges of a female joining the SK military and everyone will act shocked at how rampant sexual harassment/abuse or even how bad females bullying other females in that setting can be. Just look at the US if you want a template
    The military environment has been designed to purposefully be toxic, with some perks and useful skills to hide the dark underneath, because eggheads don't believe it's possible to create a good and useful army without breaking people's spirit and inserting their propaganda first. Individualism in army recruits means they could run away/defect if sent to the frontlines and you lose a war, gov'ts and politicians don't want that. Or a charismatic private could turn a team against the captain and create disorder in the ranks.

    Here in Germany we paused our mandatory military service in 2010. 10 years later our highest general said that this was actually the best thing they could have done for the military. Yes they have way less people than before but all those active people are specialised and ready whenever something happens. Not having to pay so much money for every single person that will forget everything he learned after 5 years is a huge benifit as well.
    The only good thing I hear people say about military is that you learn discipline and taking care of your baracks. I was in the first year that didn't have to do the military service and I neither lack discipline nor do I not know how to take care of my apartment :D
    Pretty much everyone in my family went to military service and they all said they mostly did nothing or drank alcohol.

      Korea doesn't worry about money. Because Korean soldiers rarely get paid. Currently, it has increased to about 1/3 of the minimum hourly wage, but it is still very efficient for the state.

    • @RealTaIk
      @RealTaIk Год назад +1

      @@hp0635 yeah the mandatory people don't get paid well but there are alot of people who take care of the mandatory people who actually get paid a good amount of money. So instead of them taking care of the mandatory people who want to leave as soon as possible, they could take care of people who actually want to stay and make them to way better soldiers.
      1 good soldier is better than 100 bad ones.

    Hats of to the writer of DP, Kim Bo Tong for bringing this atrocious brutality to the light of day. How anyone in positions of power, could think this behaviour is the way to raise up an army to protect and serve a country patriotically, is beyond comprehension. I would be filled with hate and resentment that my country didnt protect my rights as a human being. I am glad to hear that changes have now taken place, but it still is beyond imagination that grown men could ever behave this way and then God forbid a war broke out you would have to defend and protect each other. Congrats to all of the actors as it would have been an intense time for them having to portray such violence. Jung Hae In is a real talent as was all of the cast.

    My father, who was a sort of medical technician in the ROK military told me one story that took place at the shooting range.
    He said one day, he went into his medical room and saw blood everywhere. It stank, and it completely drenched everything.
    After figuring out what happened, he said that soldiers were out at the shooting range at night. Eventually, a person shot the target but was informed that he missed (Or something like that, I had a sort of a hard time listening to what my dad was saying.) So, the guy said that he hit the target, and it fell over. They went to check on it, turns out it was a person who was depressed and suicidal. It may have been because of bullying inside the barracks. What's even worse was that at the shooting range, from the place you shoot guns, two or one MP (Military Police) stand on your side. That way, if you try to aim the gun at someone, or try to kill yourself, they can grab the gun and prevent it. The dude who attempted to kill himself, as it was night, "snuck out" according to the MP next to him. My father says that it's most likely not true and that the MP didn't care about it, considering how close they are next to you, and things at night are still illuminated by moonlight, distant lights, etc, etc

    I just finished this show. It was hard to watch. From Psychology Today: ‘Psychopaths generally have a disregard for the distress they cause others, while sadists derive significant pleasure from inflicting emotional pain.’ It’s horrifying that this description fits the abusers that were depicted in the show. In the ‘real world’, the description is usually reserved for criminals who have been convicted of heinous crimes.

    Can you trust a news source thats paid for by a government to report a unbiased story about a institution also paid for by that same government. Armies just like societies change slowly. Im sure there have been policy changes but the culture in the military will not have changed very much. I served 9 years in two separate military organizations in two separate countries. This story has been spun to paint a happy picture. You can bet that abuses still occur and until the women of Korea demand better treatment for their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers it will continue because the men have always know and done nothing (they adapted to the culture of the military).

    I feel like they could have everyone set aside 4-5 hours weekly and train. If the entire country is going to war, I am sure women will also need to know certain skills. And have a separate military with people more highly skilled. Like career soldiers. And they should probably offer migrant workers who are staying there long term citizenship and have more young people in general. Taking a bunch of men and isolating them from the rest of society is super unhealthy and benefits no one. They just become breeding ground for misogyny. Whereas if you have everyone train together, you foster community. It could be built into school curriculum. Something like emergency first aid…whether a country is in war or not, everyone benefits from everyone knowing cpr. I feel like this whole thing could be different.

      Duh. Where there are people, there's bullying. However, the difference is organizational culture. Is bullying something that's routinely overlooked or ignored, or is it something that an organization is willing to address and fix? Do bullies get a slap on the wrist, or no punishment at all, or do they face real consequences? Are victims blamed and shamed, or are they supported?

    Just hearing from this video it makes me really upset. I’m a US Army soldier and I joined to serve and protect our country. That was my choice. Inside military bullying is not tolerated and THATS not who we are, we trained together as brothers, we have this saying YOU WATCH MY BACK AND I WATCH YOUR BACK, it all brotherhood. Trainers they trained you to be tough to fight the enemy not to freaking bully your brothers. Military is my second family so why bully your family. Seniors helps the new recruits to go through their training to be a fighting soldiers. That’s why every US military show pride, respect, and honor to their uniform.
    Their are some deserters too, that’s showing respect and helping each other become Army strong.
    Bullying is just a very disrespectful and very hateful way of showing to this new recruits and I’m sure they don’t to be part of this military organization. Over here in America you bully someone your done and your out. SHOW YOUR TOUGHT ON YOUR ENEMIES NOT TO YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE MILITARY FAMILY. SHOW THEM RESPECT AS YOUR BROTHERS, AS YOUR MOTHER LAND NEEDS THEM TO PROTECT THEIR FREEDOM. WHAT A SHAME THAT I THOUGHT SOUTH KOREA IS VERY WELL PROGRESSED COUNTRY, SPECIALLY AFTER KOREAN WAR. DONT BULLY YOUR BROTHERS OR SISTERS IN THE MILITARY, STAND STRONG AS ONE.. EMBRACED EACH OTHER, BECAUSE YOU ARE ALL THE PROTECTOR OF YOUR MOTHER LAND. REMEMBER WHAT THE ALLIES DID TO YOUR COUNTRY, THEY DIED AND FACE YOUR ENEMIES FOR YOUR FREEDOM.
    IF YOUR A BULLY ONE YOU THINK YOUR BAD ASS, GUESS WHAT YOUR NOT, YOU ARE A COWARD, BECAUSE YOU ONLY BULLY THE WEAKEST. STOP THAT WAY TREATING YOUR BROTHERS, BELIEVE ME THEY WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE SOMEDAY. STAY STRONG AS ONE.
    LIKE IN THE US ARMY, WE WILL NEVER LEAVE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS BEHIND HOOOOOAAAAH ARMY STRONG.

    Its almost like there's bullying in schools, colleges. Obviously it will transcend to the military, the workplace. Its natural. People need to understand. Being a jerk is criminal n should stick together with victim not perpetrators. That way the system can truly change.
