I think with both the anti-psychiatry movement and the contemporary NDM, what started as very valuable critiques of the abuses of psychiatry and the medical model rapidly became ideological and thus lost empirical validity. The further they have drifted from reality the more they have laid themselves open to co-option by capitalism which after all as a system is highly skilled at co-option. I think that's why these movements tend to centre the most able of neurodisabled people and mentally ill people (or the mentally ill who have undoubtedly suffered trauma), because those who are undeniably objectively impaired by intrinsic features of their conditions, (and those mentally ill people who have no history of trauma) reveal the non-reality of a lot of the ideology.

Any time that people deny suffering whether it is psychiatric or autistic it helps the government cut services. If you can deny suffering there no reason to help anyone. If autism is only a difference then help isn't needed.
