I met Lon Haldeman on the road on his last full day of riding this RAAM event, the first one. I and my friend met him before he crossed into New Jersey and, while riding together, he asked me if there was a stone wall crossing the road just ahead. He was hallucinating. As we came into New York, while crossing the George Washington Bridge, a helicopter came up to our right and a car with a cameraman sitting through the space in the ceiling in the car came up to our left. It was a real blast. Next thing I knew I was on the Wide World of Sports with Lon and my friend. Wild! Great to see me on the video (the 9th part here on RUclips) with my old Bell helmet, the original one.
A few years later the field grew to 30 riders. One was from the Tour de France. When he arrived at the starting line, the others laughed at him. He ended up winning and the second place rider was 24hrs behind him. LoL
Micheal Shermer! the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine. David Cole the holocaust revisionist and Taki magazine journalist who came out on the Phil Donahue show with Shermer mentioned that he had loved cycling lol.

I loved watching this as a kid... ABC should do a throwback and show 2020 RAAM this summer on TV.
