Snow chains should've been a standard item on these rigs. Heavy hauler rigs in Alaska and Canada run chains a lot of times on their 18-wheelers.

So curious to know why they didn't use snow chains on their tyres when the ice was so slippery

Exactly my thoughts too. Ice Road truckers in Canada and Alaska run with snow chains on very often for their regular size rig heavy hauls, and I know they do make snow chains for these bigger military style rigs as well.
