When I first watched it I thought “it’s funny because it’s dumb”. Watching it now “it’s funny because it turns a stupid bar/locker room joke and turns it into a whole damn musical”
To me, stupid humor is like just dick and fart jokes. Then there's humor that kind of disguises itself as simple humor but it's actually just really smart humor, like Mr. Show, Monty Python, or anything written by Simon Pegg. They're all masters of comedy.
In the episode commentary, while talking about how talented Meleva Barbula and Jack Black are, David says, "All you got was, like, 'thank you', and $50 and some juice, y'know, for all your hard work."
There are some sketches throughout the seasons that kind of fall flat for me, but this one episode is one that I could watch over and over and over and never get sick of it. In fact, I do that lol Every skit in it is gold, and this ending is masterful. Absolute favorite episode.
I got done watching all of Better Call Saul and it reminded me that he was in this show. I remembet randomly finding it on my familys old TV when we had no cable or anything and i remember this very episode lmao probably not something i shouldve seen at that age but it was hilarious😂
Let's hope that Bob Odenkirk's new book "Comedy, Comedy, Drama" will prompt those who never caught Mr. Show the first time around to seek out videos here on RUclips. The world needs more warped comedy and more hysterical laughter.
As they say, when you know better, you do better. So now that you know about it, go forth and seek the heavenly gifts that are Mr. Show episodes. You will not regret it.
To really get the context around this skit, I would highly suggest watching the full episode. It's season 1, episode 2, called "What To Think," and it's absolutely hysterical.
You know, if the farmer had just not even said, anything about the holes in the first place, the salesman wouldn’t have even noticed or cared about them
That's the point, the story has been used as a cautionary tale since moo cows have existed, the 3 holes represent any given bad choices one can make, that can feel satisfactory at first, but then cause one's demise. That's why he's warned not to touch one at all but of course transgresses
My favorite part of that song here is when they first go into it and Bob and David both roll their Rs in "forgot" lol So random and funny, it gets me every time 😅
The "directors" real name is Ben Zook. My last name is Zook. It's always a pleasure to come by someone who shares my unusual last name, and to see there's a "Zook" involved with Mr. Show, makes total sense to me. We are an unusual bunch. Even if we're not directly related!! 🤣
I've seen this show so many times, i can never see it again unless I'm watching it with someone else who's mever seen it before but totally gets this comedy. Lol
I could be wrong, but I think you're thinking of the "Jesus Christ Superstar" parody, which was another one Jack Black was in, called "Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star", where he played Jeepers Creepers and his parents were annoyed at him for being such a slacker. I've never seen "Godspell", though, so there may just be a smaller reference in this skit that I didn't pick up on.
@@coalbloodedIn Godspell, the last song literally has Jesus singing, "Oh God, I'm dying" in the exact same melody. But I'll now have to check out Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star!
Have you not watched the rest of the episode? Or even the beginning of this video? He's a traveling salesman and he sells leather pants. In the Ozarks. That's why the pants are all he has to offer the farmer.
I like the bait-and-switch of expecting his gay son to be incredible at working the hole, but it instead being a very powerful milking machine behind the wall
Have you not heard that joke before? It's mentioned at the beginning of this episode (S01E02, "What To Think"). The gay son thing was just a random one-liner.
It is really funny how much of this that the audience doesn’t even get but is pure comedy gold. Ahead of their time. This would slay today. Imagine them redoing this with Jack TODAY. They would make a bajillion dollars and deserve it.
Its obviously sad that the soundmix on a nearly 30 year skit is not to your taste, but you if you actually listen people are laughing. Just exactly what more do you require?
@@jamesmaybrick2001 dude........ the fuck? i don't "require" anything i wasn't even trying to criticize that hard, i am just surprised that more people aren't laughing... holy shit
@@jamesmaybrick2001 also how arrogant to presume that people at the time, that lived through the context this sketch was written in, would not get the humor but we on the internet can
Yes they did actually, this episode was written in reaction to critics against previous jokes, the whole episode exorted family values and "wholesome" joke telling, then culminated in a musical number meant to mock those notions. The farmer and the three holes is an old cautionary tale, that used to be widely circulated in chain emails but it certainly predates the internet so people watching this probably knew/ had heard of it. From then the premise is very clear. When I first discovered this show, I watched entire episodes of it on here, and watching the whole episode helps understand the sketch in the right context, which makes it funnier and keeps you from assuming anything about the original audience
It's Meleva Barbula as the blonde devil. Jill and Janeane were in different skits earlier in the episode. On the commentary of this episode, Bob said Meleva was "just a friend with a great voice."
It is a legitimate shame that David Cross never did any serious singing. He actually has a really wonderful voice.
He could’ve been a broadway performer.
I couldn't agree more!!
And I love that Mandy Patinkin sings one of his songs in "Run, Ronnie, Run".
The man brings a tear to my eye with 'Y'all are brutalizing me' 🥹👏🥹👏👏

Thank you, Globo-Chem, for bringing us this masterpiece.

Take it from me, I love you! - Pit-Pat
Almost thirty years later and still my favorite show of all time.
Have you watched Full House reboot, I think you might change your tune
Holy shit it's really about that old. Even after 3 decades it's still feels fresh and like the most groundbreaking of sketch comedy, to me at least.
Jack Black's little dance still makes me lose it all these years later.
Always giving it 115%!
When you take a joke way to far and then you go way way way farther 😂

I'm generally not one for hyperbole, but this is the greatest sketch in the history of mankind.
jack black looks fine af in this skit omg
In the episode commentary, while talking about how talented Meleva Barbula and Jack Black are, David says, "All you got was, like, 'thank you', and $50 and some juice, y'know, for all your hard work."
I love how at the end they make fun of how musicals typically end, the director gets flowers, has an over exaggerated bow, and ofc the group hug
This was one of the best shows ever
the fucking production just descending into nonsense, lol
This is THE BEST Mr Show episode. Tankerbell and The Milk Machine are Oedenkirk's best characters ... ever ... including Saul ... period!!
That southern accent he does gets me hot tbh
There are some sketches throughout the seasons that kind of fall flat for me, but this one episode is one that I could watch over and over and over and never get sick of it. In fact, I do that lol

Absolute favorite episode.
I love that they turned one of the oldest jokes into a skit.
The joke about dicks in holes?
And all to stick it to Senator Tankerbell for cutting the awts-funding budget.

I meet young people all the time that know of Mr. show, they call themselves comedy nerds , Mr. show is a cult classic to the younger generations now.
Jack Black left the milk machine hangin’ on that high five 😂 poor milk machine!!
