Thanks! This where lifesavers. 4 months ago 2 hurricanes hit Puerto Rico. One of them was Categorized as a #5, which is the worst in the scale. We had no electricity for 3 months and this cheap lights came very handy and useful during that time. I used them with solar battery banks. Such a lifesaver!
A pre-emptive answer for a potential question : No need to be concerned about getting an electric shock through touching this - USB supplies 5 Volts. - Also - it can be used either way up.
I learned about this product from this video. The product is a solution to a problem I was solving. I was skeptical about the quality, but for less than five bucks for five of them, shipped to my door no less, I decided to take a gamble (using your US link). This item is extremely proficient in terms of function and it exceeded my expectations in build quality. This is a "cheap" product that SHOULD BE CHEAP. The architecture and execution on PCB completely exceeded my expectations: Clean reflow, recognizable components, quality surface-design and minimalistic execution. Bravo, to whomever is turning these out. Five out of five that I received are fully functional and all equal in build quality. Thank you Techmoan for reviewing.
Gotta say that I miss the prior intro music already, haha. It really implied the idea of "you're about to see some AWESOME stuff!" Fun little device though! Never really thought of needing a thing like this, but with the ubiquity of USB plugs now it makes sense.
I use these at work. But i now use a plastic encased and less bright version. DO NOT LEAVE THESE ON FOR ANY EXTENDED PERIOD!!!! They get extremely hot and will begin to melt your USB unit and are a genuine fire risk. Opt for the less bright version. Just as cheap more rugged and won't overheat.
I've reviewed a number of USB lights but this is the first time I've seen one with a built in dimmer. Very awesome! I used one last night with my powerbank as we walked along the beach :)
Intro Music. Old or New VOTE: goo.gl/v9huuE I get loads of complaints about the intro music so for an experiment I swapped it on this video. If you have a preference for the old or new ditty - you could cast a vote above.
+Techmoan i like the actual music of the new intro, but the last one had a very pleasing "in sync" effect. the music sounded almost like it spun up at the same rate as the tape spindle. i noticed the spinning up had a higher lead-up to this gradual build of the new music, but it wasn't quite so.. affecting? for me. which i think would probably just be a matter of trying different timings rather than anything inherent.
* Stick it up your nose, and become the funnest guy at the party! * Swallow it, and maybe meet a cute nurse at the hospital. * Plug it into a solar charger, and direct it at itself, for a free energy device. * Put it on a string and make a necklace, or get two of them and use with safety pins to make earrings.
Very useful if the power goes out. Combine with a large battery pack and you got light for days! You could Use a USB OTG cable and make your phone take videos at night better. I can't really think of too many others.
I bought some when I saw your video years ago and have been using them in different ways since. Once they provided light to passengers on a stranded train I was in and that was stopped for hours, used with a power bank. I’ve been using one in my kid’s bedroom for years. Today I built my own DIY reading light with a USB extension cable and nailed everything to the wall beside my bed. The fun never ends.
it would take a lot of time to develop that .... and would cost WAY more then they can make it for :P - you could make your own with a simple 555 and mosfet dimmer and cheap high power leds and buck converter though.
I am from Canada, and I got the usb lights you introduced about four weeks ago. It took about two weeks to get them , but that's okay. I'm just writing to you to thank you for your demonstration. The lights work great and I need to find more uses. Thanks again, k.d.
i think you mean usb yeah i had one of those too not bad i also got off there a mini usb vacuum once for $1and a usb fan and not electrical related but i did get some lego Minifigures for like $0.45usd each and they feel and look just as good as real lego
So great to see a CH link in your listing, never happens that anyone thinks about such a small country :-) Thanks a lot, I'm thinking about getting them to light the back of my PC so it is easier to plug in and see cables around there under the desk.
ha ! I have had that problem fishing about at the back of a p.c in the darkness, I think a built-in switchable light at the back of a computer should be standard issue
Those LEDs are known as 'COB' LEDs, or Chip On Board. I have bought a couple of cheap penlight/inspection torches that use them and they are staggeringly bright. I don't know for sure but they must be one of the most efficient, if not, the most efficient LEDs on the market. I collect high powered, mostly handheld, flashlights that utilise 'Cree' emitters and they are very impressive but do give off a fair amount of heat, mainly due to being overdriven and the fact you are actually holding what comprises their heat sink. These little things hardly get above room temperature, very impressed. I've spent the last week watching your videos and they are fascinating. I love your enthusiasm, knowledge and presentation, keep up the good work! Thanks. :)
That's actually spooky. I was thinking of looking for something like this only just today. I'm a musician, and when you first go on stage the lights in the venue are usually dimmed, and it can be sometimes quite difficult to see what you're putting on your instrument, turning on all the effects and doing all the checks that need to be done before starting to play. Something like this on a music stand would be totally ideal. MINT! I'll get one for all the guys in the band.
Great for bias lighting..I purchased 10 of these USB lights on ebay....I had a couple of cheap USB port replicators...filled the empty USB ports with these USB lights....stuck the USB ports to the back of my flat screen tv with double sided foam tape, then linked them to an empty USB port on the TV... The lights turn on when I power up the TV set...helps reduce eyestrain....works like a charm
Could be useful in the back of a tower-PC to see the other USB ports an I/O. Just plug it in to a spare port when you need to find that Optical out or DisplayPort in the dark;) I know some motherboards already have an LED back there for this very reason.
Cool. These things are handy for home theatre and audio equipment. Plug it into the back of an AV receiver or a Blu-ray player facing toward the cable, and you can see what you're doing when you're moving stuff around and unplugging things, without needing a little torch, and freeing up both hands (I used a USB hub though, because I'm a wuss and feel paranoid about this stuff). I wouldn't leave it on indefinitely, though. They get pretty hot. I don't know what it is about LEDs, but I just love them. I have them everywhere in the house now, and even replaced all of the bulbs in my car, bar the headlights. So addictive. Imagine what your '70s audio gear's meters would look like with shiny new LEDs in them!
+Richard Schulz lol yeah I was about to spend €10 Then I said "I don't really need this, why am I buying it?" And decided not to get like 15 of them and ended up spending 4 euros
Don't worry. I do that too. Last month, I bought disposable paper sauce cups, silica gel packs, litmus paper strips. It's just the way of modern life, if it's cheap enough, i'll buy, even if I don't need it right there and then.
I have a few of these and couple of the smaller versions. I leave for work many days way before dawn. I use the smaller versions with a bit of red taillight repair tape. I walk out the door with no waiting for my eyes to adapt to low light before I drive.
I bought a 10 pack of these exact same lights and they are really great. I use them as a reading light, area light, night light and whatever else I can think of. They're tiny, bright, dimmable and inexpensive.
I bought 5 of these little lights on Amazon. They are amazingly bright. I love them. Very useful! One thing though they do get very warm when they are lit.
Just wanted to say that it must be written "an USB", but then I found out that the correct writing is indeed "a USB", because its about the sound (you-as-be) and not the vowel (u). Lesson learned :-|
Useful for a desktop computer. If I need to clean mine or do a bunch of wire organisation I need a strong bright light beneath my desk, this would be perfect for it.
One thing not mentioned in the video, since it's not built like a regular USB plug, they can be plugged in either direction in the USB socket and still work. Great little lights.
This would be great for camping. I always have a couple power banks with me when go on adventures and throwing a few of these in with them will come in handy.
+Randomroutine Perhaps, but most decent power banks come with baggy cases and you can easily throw one of these in there with the powerbank. You'd be surprised at how useful these little lights can be :)
I bought one over Amazon, and indeed, it is worth the small price. I mostly use it in the dimmed mode, which is sufficient to shed light into the interior of a PC, for example.
***** iam not American or british... I call that thing whatever I want, it's bright enough, I always have it with me, it doesn't need an extra power source and it really doesn't drain the battery, i used it for 2 hours once and it drained like 7% battery
+racoiaws The comment section is a place for sharing. Sure, he doesn't *need* to let us know, but its nice to hear other people's viewpoints and opinions.
I totally wouldn't mind using my shiny new expensive smartphone to reach inside an engine. Why on earth would I use something that only cost me 70p instead.
Way too expensive! Should have reviewed the one from china. If this takes 2 amps but I only have 220 volts then this won't work Clickbait, of course I need a USB light. You didn't say how many GB of storage it has!
I recently purchased some similar USB lights on ebay from a US seller and a Chinese seller, the US one is a 3 LED non dimmable/off version with a clear enclosure, the Chinese ones I ordered are 8 LED non dimmable/off with a clear enclosure. even the 3 LED versions are surprisingly bright and they do extremely well with a USB Battery charger(I imagine the 8 LED ones will be even brighter). I had actually tested the lights on a charger to see how long they would last for, with a 7800mAh power bank I had 2 lights running for 3 hours and it didn't even budge the battery level, so theres a chance that these types of lights could last upwards of a week or so if needed, so that's very good for power outages. The downside is they can get surprisingly hot
After seeing this, and looking into it a bit more, I ordered a few. For computer work, it's genius. Put one in the back of the computer, tap and you have light to see the ports. Indispensable, and because you're not holding it, you've got another free hand to fiddle with wires or something. At night in the bathroom, if you don't want to turn on the main lights to have the sun appear into your bathroom, have one waiting there and tap for a quick slowly illuminating light. It's great for that. My USB battery pack, an iFrogz discounted one, works great with it. Granted, I always have at least 1 flashlight on me, but it's nice to have it with me when I travel. It may get a bit warm, so keep a heads up on that one. Get a few, I highly recommend it.
Don't worry about the heat. I have a friend who measured one with a FLIR camera and after a few hours powered on at full brightness it only gets to 68.7°c.
A brilliant and good quality little gadget. Keep one with an emergency powerbank for instant light. Use to check USB sockets are working and putting out power. The warm white version is particularly suited to domestic use as a nightlight.
A great idea and just what I need for the boot of my trike. It has a 12 volt cigarette lighter plug and a USB power plug which are live all the time. I'll be buying some of these. Thanks matt. Great review as usual.
I got one in a usb extender cable I made out of 22 gauge wires so it is stiff enough to hold in place but still bendable, makes it a nice hands free keyboard illuminator or general mini desk-lamp.
This is very useful when I'm out camping and during adventure rides with my dirtbike since I always bring a powerbank with me. I also have a backup taped to the powerbank.
I would totally use this when I'm using my laptop past sunset and I've something to jot down and getting up to turn a lamp on- and immediately back off- is unneccesary, and frankly, more light than you need. It'd be even better if my keyboard had a USB port. It's great that this exists.
Watched your video and put together a USB light-kit for shooting the interior of a car or boat or salon of a plane. Powered from solar rechargeable USB batteries. Key-lights are similarly diminutive three bulb USB with USB switching. I fit the kit in a case with my 3-Action Cams and accessories. Thanks for turning me on to these things!
Good for low power night lights using a small mains adapter and also found them useful for illuminating obscured TV and other device usb ports without having to turn all the lights in the room on.
this would make a great camping light when used with a battery pack but I also have a battery pack that has an LED light on it, but not near as bright as this. It's just one of those small simple pocket juice ones sold at Walmart here in the US, so I might pickup a few of these and keep them on my daily backpack for when I go camping. Also thought of another good use is emergency car repair for when you have to say change a tire on the side of the road at night, and you don't want to have to hold your phone as light, and run the battery down on it when you can use your giant USB battery bank.
Using it as a hotel night light is a pretty brilliant idea. It seems absolutely perfect for that since it's extremely portable. Just switch the USB ports to always be powered when charging in your laptop's BIOS and away you go.
I didn't know you had to tap these to get them to come on. I had ordered some of them already and was thinking that they were broken and was just going to make thm into earrings. Thanks Mr. Techmoan
That is a pretty nifty little device. I was thinking while watching, that it might work better in some situations if you could plug it in face down. Like in the laptop for more indirect lighting, then I saw your comment that it does work like that.
The last use makes the most sense. If you're always scrounging around the backside of computers and figuring out or cleaning up the cord and wiring mess, that's when it'd would come in handy as that's also when there's most likely going to be a USB port available.
Almost every monitor has a USB port on the back, I plugged three of these behind my triple monitor setup. They illuminate the whole desk and wall, reducing eye strains, it also looks cool for cheap! When you shut down your computer or monitors the led lights power off, you can also use ex: eventghost to power down those usb ports on request (ex: screensaver on / off).
This is great, I've been needing something exactly like this for a while now since my car has no interior lights. In the mornings it is pitch black in the cabin of my car so this will help a great deal!
I have a set of USB powered stick on strip lights plugged into the USB port on the back of my TV. It helps reduce eye strain when I'm watching in the dark and also gives a nice back glow effect. I'd imagine this could be used in the same way, but a fair bit cheaper than the lights I use! Also I prefer the old opening music.
I was looking for a cheap led solution to illuminate the back of the tv with a diffuse dim light, while watching. This one seems to fit well my purpose. The tv set has an usb port that is powered when the tv is on. Just perfect.
My Honeywell home security panel has a USB port on the bottom, probably meant for expansion accessories, but I have one of these lights plugged into it at full brightness, with the LEDs facing the wall. A perfect night light for coming down to the living room if the dogs need to be let outside in the middle of the night!
Thanks! This where lifesavers. 4 months ago 2 hurricanes hit Puerto Rico. One of them was Categorized as a #5, which is the worst in the scale. A pre-emptive answer for a potential question :
No need to be concerned about getting an electric shock through touching this - USB supplies 5 Volts.
- Also - it can be used either way up.
+Techmoan But the risk of a short circuit in a USB Hub without short circuit protection is still there, I assume ? :P Been a while since I graduated..
+Techmoan but what if i get electric shock? Also can it be used either way up?
+PESHOPIKATA you can't get an electric shock
+PESHOPIKATA nicely done :D
+PESHOPIKATA Funny guy

I'm glad it worked out for you, and thanks for the positive feedback.
I set bids on ebay, and now I got 20 of these. :D
I've given some to my relatives and friends also.
Gotta say that I miss the prior intro music already, haha. It really implied the idea of "you're about to see some AWESOME stuff!"
Fun little device though! Never really thought of needing a thing like this, but with the ubiquity of USB plugs now it makes sense.
+Lazy Game Reviews your comment have read more, but here is no more, so... do Amiga tech tales please.
hi lgr i didn't know you watched Techmoan
+Lazy Game Reviews I second that emotion... bring back the old music. I miss it. This new stuff is borrrrring. :-)
+Lazy Game Reviews I had to check that the playback speed is set to 1x … it sounded a bit like the previous intro music turned down to 0.25x speed.
What do you think the Goodwill price will be for one of them? I'm trying to plan ahead.
So your telling us that we potentially could use it as a light?
You could use it to better read the grammar rule book in the dark to find out that you used "your" where you should have used "you're"
Indeed, you're right about this.
irregardless of youre comment i Think the lite has value
Homework: try to find the word 'irregardless' in any dictionary.
lol you almost got me :D
I use these at work. But i now use a plastic encased and less bright version.
DO NOT LEAVE THESE ON FOR ANY EXTENDED PERIOD!!!!
They get extremely hot and will begin to melt your USB unit and are a genuine fire risk. Opt for the less bright version. Just as cheap more rugged and won't overheat.
@Maiahi Or maybe there's a limited amount of power you can dump into a bunch of bright LEDs without a heatsink before they naturally overheat, y'know
yeah I noticed that too but they are cool none the less.
What do you use them for?
Does it still get hot when you dim it?
For how long in a row can it be on? 10 Horus or days or?
I've reviewed a number of USB lights but this is the first time I've seen one with a built in dimmer. Very awesome! I used one last night with my powerbank as we walked along the beach :)
I was like "where the hell are the pedals in your car?" and then I realized you're British :P

@George Fraile if you Google who invented the car you get a German, the concept was from that.
You could plug it behind a desktop PC so it's nice and illuminated if you need to go back there
great idea if you have a big tower in a tight space.
I was thinking that if they made one to point down with that capability of brightness it could be used around your PC/laptop.
Intro Music. Old or New VOTE: goo.gl/v9huuE
I get loads of complaints about the intro music so for an experiment I swapped it on this video.
If you have a preference for the old or new ditty - you could cast a vote above.
+Techmoan I like the new intro +new music
New music is 👍
+Techmoan New music goes well with the spinning led strip
+Techmoan
The Tefifon "Cuba-Baion" music wasn't added as an option, so I vote for that... :P
I've had one of these running constantly on full brightness for 9 months now and its still going strong,
great backlight for my project.
* Stick it up your nose, and become the funnest guy at the party!
* Swallow it, and maybe meet a cute nurse at the hospital.

2:47 "...and then you've got a nice bright light on the end of a wire, you could stick that anywhere you wanted"
Bloody hell, I'm so immature...
+RetroGeet And.....very good at it!!!
"phrasing...."
Now it's possible to light up that area where the sun don't shine!
"Why, yes. The sun *does* shine out of my arse."
This would be fantastic for use in a server rack! The rear of such a rack is often pretty dark but covered with free USB ports.
More cheapies please! 👍
a great little gadget and a nice video! Also, love the placement of the clock in your garage! :)

+EpicLPer I'm planning on changing it frequently - lots of people hate the old one.
+EpicLPer I have to agree! The old music just "fit"
+Techmoan I must be weird then because i liked the old intro music
+Techmoan yup, keep the old one, its a "thing" :D
+dreedee yes the old music was way better
Cool little light. Just bought it off your US link. This is why Techmoan is one of my favorite channels. You always find the weird gadgets.

yeah aliexpress from what i have seen have some nice gadgets for like $1usd or less free shipping

Xenon777 yeah. But that's just how led's are.
at max power, yes
These things get hot, but not too hot.
I've got a few of these. Been using them for more than a year I think. Very durable. Very useful!
I've got one with 24 LEDs and I'm using that as a flash to my phone.
I bought a 10 pack of these exact same lights and they are really great. I use them as a reading light, area light, night light and whatever else I can think of. They're tiny, bright, dimmable and inexpensive.
What happened to the intro music! Put it back please.
I bought 5 of these little lights on Amazon. They are amazingly bright. I love them. Very useful! One thing though they do get very warm when they are lit.
Put a diffuser on it and use it to help light you for webcam skypes.
This is a great idea! Often with webcams it's the lack of lighting why the image looks so shitty. A USB light would be perfect for that.
It looks like it works both ways so aiming it at the wall or down would make the light work better in the hallway scenario.
As always a great job.
I dont really like your new intro compared to the old one.
One thing not mentioned in the video, since it's not built like a regular USB plug, they can be plugged in either direction in the USB socket and still work. Great little lights.
Rubbish it flickers loadz also wood of bin good if u did more close ups btw how do u turn it on and off?
+EazyDuz18
did you even watched the video ffs?!
+EazyDuz18 I see what you're doing there.
+EazyDuz18 Am I the only one getting the joke? It is a reference to another video guys
+Techmoan I just see him bouncing his head against the keyboard in ten different ways! :D
The flickering is only seen by cameras
This would be great for camping. I always have a couple power banks with me when go on adventures and throwing a few of these in with them will come in handy.
Do you need a USB Light? honestly i really dont know clicks video
I like the new intro music. After all, things can't be constant forever. Btw, cool video man.
GIMMICKY
+Randomroutine Perhaps, but most decent power banks come with baggy cases and you can easily throw one of these in there with the powerbank. You'd be surprised at how useful these little lights can be :)
Gadget Addict i got a flexi-stick-usb-light from ikea, pretty good doe!
+Gadget Addict my power bank cane with a built-in led torch lol
andrewhtf I'd be surprised if it's as bright as the one shown in this video though.
+Gadget Addict nah not as bright and without dimmer function but certainly usable to search around stuffs in a dark garage.
I bought one over Amazon, and indeed, it is worth the small price. I mostly use it in the dimmed mode, which is sufficient to shed light into the interior of a PC, for example.
do i need that thing ? my phone has a flashlight... so no... i do not
***** iam not American or british... I call that thing whatever I want, it's bright enough, I always have it with me, it doesn't need an extra power source and it really doesn't drain the battery, i used it for 2 hours once and it drained like 7% battery
+Hunter Rodrigez If you don't need it, don't buy it. There's no need to let us know.
+racoiaws
The comment section is a place for sharing. Sure, he doesn't *need* to let us know, but its nice to hear other people's viewpoints and opinions.
Unfortunately what you need isn't for sale.
I totally wouldn't mind using my shiny new expensive smartphone to reach inside an engine. Why on earth would I use something that only cost me 70p instead.
The fact that you added Pun intended...you now have a fan for life
Way too expensive!
Should have reviewed the one from china.
If this takes 2 amps but I only have 220 volts then this won't work
Clickbait, of course I need a USB light.
You didn't say how many GB of storage it has!
+Koen d_R (KC) IT;S NOT EVEN BLUTOOTH LOL!
Great review as usual.
great video buddy. nice to see something other than cameras or audio things from time to time.
I have a few of these mainly for power outages, came in handy last year.
Good for low power night lights using a small mains adapter and also found them useful for illuminating obscured TV and other device usb ports without having to turn all the lights in the room on.
Turn your old AC to USB chargers into lights. Awesome. I started with five, just ordered ten more. Awesome product. So bright.
this would make a great camping light when used with a battery pack but I also have a battery pack that has an LED light on it, but not near as bright as this.
I bought four of these after this video. Less than $5 USD shipped. Took a week from Hong Kong. Very impressive light.
That's actually not been my experience.
I didn't know I needed this, and yet, here we are.
The last use makes the most sense. If you're always scrounging around the backside of computers and figuring out or cleaning up the cord and wiring mess, that's when it'd would come in handy as that's also when there's most likely going to be a USB port available.
"Do you need a USB Light?"
Here's the links to buy one.
*I guess I need one...*
I've got 5 of these, didn't know about the dimming feature, so thanks for that! They're super useful.
This is great, I've been needing something exactly like this for a while now since my car has no interior lights. In the mornings it is pitch black in the cabin of my car so this will help a great deal!
the USB wall charger idea is very good. If I happen to see these at a check out line I may have to pick up a few.
Oh I have 2 of these! Just saw them on DealExtreme and added them to my cart on impulse. Great little lights
If I didn't have a torch on my phone, my eyebrows would be raised more than they presently are.
Thanks for the smile at the end of a long day.
Just Stopping By To Say Your Channel Is Awesome! And Keep It Up! It's All Very Helpful And Detailed. (:
I like you new intro music Mat!
I ordered a few of these USB lights to give away to relatives and friends as small, inexpensive token gifts. Thanks Techmoan.
