    great to see and as always variety feeding is so important. Locusts have a larger gut than smaller livefoods, so the transfer of live gut culture and Gutload is increased. In order to pass this on in a highly bioavailable way we now suggest that they are prefed and hydrated and heated for at least an hour to 32 degree. This then allows the transfer of the gut cultures. A species well worth including within variety feeding and especially good around the breeding months for both species. They are also a larger animal, less are required to fill the animal than smaller livefoods. For me, my go to foods are these locusts, brown house crickets, calciworms and soldier flies. Then morios and waxworms in smaller amounts during the month. I limit roach feeding due to the high level of P, but again, they are fine when measured within variety feeding. Good use of ReVitaliseD3, a nice light dusting.

      Oh I just saw your comment and I had actually asked this in a seperate comment, but is there a specific formula to leopard gecko supplementation, ie x mcg of calcium per g of bodyweight or something of the sort? I hate guessing, of course the gutloaded amount is a variable in this but it would tremendously help to have a baseline to work with! I would really appreciate a reply back
      Also, I have been desperately trying to get my hands on the shade dweller and dhp (in the US) but every company that carries it is out of stock. I have emailed them all (yep I did that) asking if they had a rough approximate date on when it may be back in stock but the ones I've heard back from have not thus far had an answer. Do you have any insight as to when more shipments will be going to the US? And could you possibly give me some more retailer names that carry your products because all I'm looking at right now is reptilesupply, Josh's frogs, bio dude and pangea.
      Thanks!

      How do you best gut load your insects please? I feed a single Leopard Gecko which we have owned for 3 months now and I keep a variety of foods for him inc locusts, dubia, morio and meal worms. I have been making sure they have food in the tubs I am keeping them in on a daily basis but the Retile Network article file I have just read recommends to split the food you intend to feed your reptile 12 hours before and then gut load and hydrate to the maximum. I am using the Arcadia insect fuel, bug gel for hydration plus a variety of veg which is all topped up and they are kept under the Viv. Is my method obtaining sufficient nutritional value to the insects or should I be feeding less often to make sure they are fully loaded before feeding to my Gecko. Many thanks.

      @@speedymadr6 i keep reading you are supposed to gutload 24 hrs before feeding
      Not at all saying I'm 100% sure that's correct, that's just what I keep reading but I'm going to keep looking around if I see any other info out there. But I will primarily be dusting and offering the supplement in a dish so gutloading is secondary to me. Would be nice to get some input. I had my question too but I guess they didn't get the notification about a reply 🙁

    Yesterday I went to my local PetCo to get some things for my leopard gecko I will be getting later this month. While there I very surprised when I saw the food in every tank had been dusted. They all used reptile carpet, non sand in sight, I didn’t even see sand to be bought. All of the tanks were a good size for a temporary tank. They all seemed to be happy and active. So shout out to my local PetCo. I wish all of them could do that.

    I like feeding locusts mainly because I think my lizards maybe get kinda bored of always eating the same stuff every day. I also once heard they are a bit more nutritious than crickets so I like to use them as a healthy treat instead of always switching to wax/meal/superworms. Another big bonus is that there is no way locusts will breed year round in your house and become a constant pest, except if you live in a warm climate. And lastly I feel like hunting them is a bit more challenging for the lizard than a regular cricket and thus provides more enrichment.

    Locusts are not common feeders here in the states, but I was able to get some at a reptile show right before we locked down for quarantine. Then I couldn't bring myself to feed them to my lizards either, because of their faces. (I have plenty of other feeder bugs at all times, so the geckos didn't go hungry.) I tried to breed the locusts, thinking if I had enough of them I wouldn't feel guilty for feeding them off, but they didn't breed for me and died after a few months. Ah well.

    I'm so irrationally scared of locusts/grasshoppers. They are too big for me to feel okay just smashing them, but they also are so incredibly unpredictable when trying to shoo them out. Their little eyes and mouth really got me messed up! I CANT

    this is great to see somebody having a large enough enclosure for their gecko, you’re very enthusiastic about reptiles. I’m new to explore your channel and I see you have great experience. Aswell, I did see that Ziggy had passed, I very dearly am sorry. If you’re struggling, I read up that think your gecko climbing logs etc to get to a rainbow bridge. Where you’ll be waiting for them when you die.
    Anyways back to the reptile stuff;
    I use locusts for my 2 almost 1 year-old geckos. They enjoy them so much. I will absolutely agree with you, they are a nightmare with getting them out. I use tweezers, especially made for feeding reptiles and then either jump and their leg falls off. it also depends on what size your locusts are, I’m currently feeding mine medium.
    3-8 weeks: 3-4
    9-12 weeks: 5 maximum # medium
    1y.o: (how much they can eat in an hour) #medium / large locusts
    3y.o + : 4 #large / extra large locusts
    It also depends on the geckos personality if they are a massive foodie I would recommend these x

    I offer my Leopard Gecko Morty locusts just to offer him more variety in his diet. I normally feed him 5 to 6 at a time (he is an adult male) I will tong feed him most of them and let him hunt to last few down. I do also have bearded dragons so any that get to big for him don’t go to waste. They work really well for me as Morty won’t eat marrio worms of meal worms so it is nice to offer him some variety. I also only have to buy food for one gecko so 1 tub lasts me a while.

    I normally feed my gecko locusts rather than crickets, hes just not into crickets that much, I generally feed about 6 or 7 as that's usually all he wants, but I would say dont leave these in the tank overnight as they easily climb up the walls and ur gecko probs won't find them 😂, they can also be a bit, um, spikier than crickets so they might irritate the gecko if left in with them overnight or anything. Love the video, looking forward to the next one 😊. Also I tend to find locusts won't often eat much fruit and veg other than leaf-type vegetables

    One of my leopard geckos was very turned off by the long back legs of the crickets and would not eat them for about a month. Until I decided I would outsmart him. So I cut or pulled the biggest legs off the back of the crickets and now he takes the crickets every time! 😁 He is much healthier now as well. I had just got him so I was glad to have figured him out.😉

    I don't like crickets too much, so my leopard gecko eats locust (4 per feeding usually). She eats 3 different type of bugs, so one tube of locust (size 3) is more or less perfect in quantity up untill they are too big to feed. They are still cool to observe after that though, grow really big, the wings developing fully etc.

      Calcium without d3 most of the week, vitamins with d3 for 1 or 2 days per week. Everyone has a slightly different schedule with healthy geckos so don't worry too much about it being an exact science. As long as they get their calcium, vitamins, and d3 during the week you should be set.

    • @ajgr888
      @ajgr888 4 года назад

      Gingerblossom Oh yes! I have watched that, but she doesn’t explain when to use the D3 on the multivitamin. Or is the multivitamin considered the D3? In her description she says she uses 100% normal calcium, Calcium with D3, and a multivitamin. She doesn’t show in her example when she uses the D3

    I tried locusts with my gecko (Gizmo, yes I have a Gizmo too!), he wasn't overly fussed by them and I didn't like the look of them in all honesty, they gave me the heeby jeebys!! 😂
    Had a go with Dubia Roaches and he loves them, they are nice meaty snacks, are silent, odourless (unlike crickets!!) and they last for ages. They are rather expensive but I like to provide a varied diet, so always have roaches and crickets and occasionally waxworms as a treat.
    Love your videos, generally rely on you for advice and guidance on caring for my little Gizmo, thank you!!

    Lmao 🤣 I am so glad you said about the feeding them to your gecko and you can see their faces and don’t like it I say it little prayer 🙏 before I have to sacrifice them. Mine will only eat locusts and meal worms that’s it. Crickets annoy me because of the noise they make especially at night and I found they stink 😷 I find locusts pretty easy to look after bar winter it can get really cold here in the uk so a lot of them die in the first few days. And they are definitely more expensive I pay about £5.25p for 25 of them but there is usually about 30/34 of them. She will go through them in a fortnight but she doesn’t seem to put on much weight 🤔 She is a leopard gecko.
