Yeah, Episode 2 beyond had me cackling at several moments. I think the only one that came close to as scary as Ep 1 was 3, but the Hospital is more cobfined and the slightly better-than-shit animation added this freaky insane asylum/Horror B-movie vibe to it.
I think the worst thing we lost was the absence of the use of speed lines, wind, and shadow swirls Junji likes to use. It really detracts from the uniqueness and animation style after Episode 1.

As someone who watches shows like Smiling Friends and Bojack, cheap animation doesn't make something terrible. It's the not knowing wtf is going on every episode. And I get that this is an adaptation that cut out the majority of the story. So this is bad direction. Someone tried doing too much. I would have preferred one arc to be the full 4 episodes rather than the whole book. It did too much, and that is just poor direction choices. Shuichi was 10000% the best thing though. He is so unintentionally funny. I love everything about him.

Wouldn't Say it ruined it. It's still very strong. Simply because of the story and body horror. - animation overall did go downhill for sure though :/
