These two lessons are fantastic. Solid gold. If your having a problem wrapping your head around all of this, go back to lesson 1 on the basic pentatonic boxes, draw the shapes on paper, study them, watch the lessons over and over again, play along with Brian on your guitar. It is a lot but you can assimilate this. Don’t give up or you will be stuck where you are now forever. The effort is worth it.
Found this because of your last video on click baiting the algorithm. Mate thanks for sharing the insight on that one. I only found you because the algorithm put one of your high view videos from years ago into my feed. I think it was the circle of fifths one. Keep doing what you do, you are one of the better teachers on RUclips. Thanks for the content
Hi Brian, I’ve been super busy lately, so I haven’t been stomping around RUclips of late. Just want to say my two pennies worth regarding subscribers looking for freebies, and spitting their pacifier/dummy out when you hint at a hemidemisemiquaver of marketing your fine online products. Good sir, go for it! Go balls deep. You have an astonishingly good product that puts the RUclips leviathans to shame (yes, Mr. Beato, as a paying customer, I’m looking at you). I for one don’t just want this channel to struggle and survive (whereby, the host is pecked to death by a thousand idiotic demands each day). I want to see it thrive. Brian, you have a product that others would have spilt into multiple packages. This is your strength. For those like my self, if you could guide us to the relevant sections of the website (a.k.a. The Theory Mothership) during your RUclips lessons, it would (a) focus the attention of those who have already bought this astonishing resource (b) entice new subscribers to make the purchase (c) provide marketing that stops cheapskate time wasters from getting their panties in a bunch every time you try to earn a living. Regardless of how you choose to conduct your business, you have my support 100%. Peace and prosperity to you good sir. You’re not a charity and your products are all killer, no filler. Rant over and out 👍☮️
I appreciate that!! You are right about everything you said. I definitely try to keep the "sales pitches" to a minimum, but helping people to understand the various different sections of the site is a great idea. I will definitely do that more. Much appreciated 😀
I'd practically given up trying to play before I found this channel. Brian explains everything so well and it's inspirational. I'm still a rubbish player but at least I'm learning.
I admire gilmour. He's a pentatonic/chord tone/mode guy. He usually plays in a box as you describe but he also all over the neck. He sure knows how to pick the right notes.
Great lesson. The best on playing chord tones that I have seen. I took a similar but less comprehensive approach by learning the triads for the chord scale (I ii iii IV V vi viid) on the GBe strings and emphasizing those notes when soloing. I believe this is a simple yet easy to learn subset of what Brian has presented. This video has inspired me to work on the expanded version, and add some extended chords as well. In my opinion, Brian is the best guitar theory teacher on RUclips; this kind of lesson is pure gold.
Excellent teaching! You are always breaking down to the most understandable and simplest effort! You help make the fun of playing the guitar understandable, accessible and, more important to me, doable! Practicing music theory can be not fun! Playing shapes and making agreeable sounds is fun and tremendously gratifying... and the music theory is already there to be learned at that time or realized along the way! Thank you, Brian!
yo! The 2nd Layer is the r e a l booster to become versatile in any setup. Thank you very much, Brian! I like small toolboxes, because you don't have to carry much weight. Great!
Ahhhh!!…. This is the piece I’ve been waiting for! It’s been great being able to run up and down the fretboard using the pentatonic and diatonic ‘shapes’… but being able to drop in some chords makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE,… thank you Brian
Great lesson. I know all kinds of scales, chord shapes and a variety of full songs, but this really makes it easy and more practical to add music theory after playing with your level 2 road map and just having fun.
With this video on the 1-5-4-3-chord progression stuff in layer 2, it finally clicked. Layer 1: Learn the 5 diatonic/pentatonic positions, connect them and noodle around. Layer 2: Learn the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-chord shapes in and around each of the 5 diatonic/pentatonic positions In both layers, start with one position and add the other when ready. I see the road map of learning now. Thanks
This is the last piece of the puzzle I needed to be self reliant. Although, would like to see the additional ways you can get the 4 string chords in all box positions. I feel those would be easier during improv since you don't move box position. After 20 yrs of not knowing how to use the freetboard until the last few months. Playing is so much fun now with my pedal board & drum machine....easier to learn songs like gnr welcome to the jungle.
This is brilliant, absolute gold. I think this and your last video are the best ones you've ever done. Shape theory is much easier to digest than music theory.
Excellent follow-up video. "Soloing" by just changing the chord shapes was such a fantastic way to demo this. It clicked something in my brain. Thank you!
A like also just for the title! Thank you 🙏 and this also acts as a brilliant consolidation and recap of a lot of your other teachings which I found wonderfully helpful ❣️
Thanks, Brian, for this video. I understood the scale soloing as very useful and had no problem using it. But I have quite some problems with the chord specific next step. Because I don't "hear" what chord is played. With the song key I can prepare that "in advance". You showed the "Howto" in another video.
I hear ya. That is why I recommend practicing over common chord progressions (eg. I V vi IV). I have a lot of other videos that emphasize the importance of seeing chords as "functions" as opposed to just random chords. That is the trick!
This is very helpful and exactly the place I'm at in my learning. I understand what you're saying but it will be a long time before I'm proficient which is daunting.
Some may say Zombie Guitar but I like to call it Goat 🐐 Guitar 🎸 🔥 I’m learning my theory as I think it’s important but this helps to get us as musical as possible until we have the necessary knowledge! I’ve fucked around for years and know enough to be dangerous but this stuff is a good mine
I know that I will have to revisit this at least 50 times because so much flew right over my head but I'm getting the connections not the terms. Not muscle memory , brain memory. Lol. Thank You..

Great lesson. Talking of #'s. This should be taught with the Nashville Number System. It would fall into line much better than the Circle of 5ths. Your already talking #'s. It is also much easier than going back and forth on a circle. And I'm talking 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Not Roman #'s . Thanks !
I found the switching from scales to chord tones to be revealing and may explain the problem I have had with playing chord tones. Hi Brian, Thankyou for the lesson . Just wanted to clarify something at time 10:50 where you mentioned the chords as being 6 Amin, C as the 1 and F as the 4th and G as the 5th, this would be right for the key of C major, BUT as you played in the key of Amin then C would be the major 3rd and FMajor would be the b6 and GMajor the b7 ? Hey Brian, this video and shape concept is gold. The Zombie site is also. As a member, have you gotten to the point where you added a PDF or more supporting material for this layer 2 concept to the Zombie site, or is it perhaps on the way? I’m thinking specifically of the chord shapes you are documenting at several points in the video.
Yup all of the written lessons can be found in the "In-Depth Lesson Portal" section of the site. The one associated with this lesson can be found in: In-Depth Lesson Portal > Chord Tone Targeting (layer 2). I have about 30 or so lessons in that section, all about layer 2 concepts...all of which include a full video as well as a written version of the lesson. It's not a PDF download, but just login to the site and you can view any of these lessons! 😁
Thank you for this lesson series. It is starting to make sense for this 70 year blues learner. Need to practice this on the fretboard to cement this in. 👍🙏🦘
Question… my understanding of the circle of 5ths as it relates to a minor key chord progression is that the A minor for example is the 1, the B diminished is 2, C Major is 3…and so on… is this to far down the rabbit hole of music theory?
Yes, if you number the chords from the minor perspective, than that is exactly right. All of that numbering stuff is just "on paper" and doesn't have any effect on the sound produced by the music. I did a lesson about it here if you want to check it out! www.zombieguitar.com/blog/numbering-minor-chord-progressions-2-perspectives
Just when I think I understand the caged system I realise I don't. Can't get it to click. I realise what it isn't lol from watching various videos of you ranting about this 😊 but struggle to implement it. Sometimes it comes across a bit like a overly complicated system which Barr chords would offer similar outcomes ie chords can be found closer together using root notes on 6 and 5th strings and these could be used to play arpegios or to target chord tones within these Barr chords, surely this is a, much more simplistic version providing maybe not the same but similar outcomes or am I completely missing the point. Either way I appreciate your videos you're an amazing guitar teacher so thank you for all you do for us.
It seems we are straining to get away from the fact that people who are great players and never studied (guitar) theory still studied "theory" they did it by ear, muscle memory, trial, and error, etc. All musicians understand "theory" if they can play an instrument. Just because they cannot articulate in musical theory language doesn't mean they don't know the theory. I've seen some very good players who did study theory but cannot teach. Teaching is another skill. This is a very good lesson but to me it still contains theory and I have only basic guitar theory knowledge thanks to programs like yours which is a steal and some of the best money I've ever invested. Studying theory took me from stuck as a beginner for years at which time I gave up on guitar for years but when I started playing again I decided to invest some time into knowing what I was doing. Theory has taken me from beginner to intermediate playing and making advancements continuously. We all learn differently but theory was my pivot point.
Yes, it does still contain theory. However, it is guitar-specific "shape theory". You can solo over an Am C G F chord progression in the exact same manner that you would a Cm Eb Bb Ab chord progression simply by shifting the same "shapes" up 3 frets. Using and focusing strictly on these "shapes" is guitar-specific. The big picture concept that I am trying to convey here is that there is a clear distinction between "general music theory" and "guitar-specific shape theory", and my reasoning for relentlessly bringing this point to attention is so that the people who may be intimidated by "general music theory" will hopefully give this a shot. Ideally, they will find that it's much more doable than they might have expected, and it will ultimately help them to become better players. That's my intention 😁
Yup many of the lessons on the site have lesson-specific video backing tracks included with them! This specific lesson actually doesn't have any backing tracks with it (yet), but I could easily add some if requested 😁
I second that. I hate seeing Brian's "explaining myself" or "pissed at some comments" videos because I see a guy letting them get to him and, possibly, feeling demotivated or demoralised when he's making excellent content and has. done, now, for years. He's not the 'flashy bastard' youtuber guitarist who, it's obvious, just wants to show off (and there's tons of them). Two I keep coming back to for the content and the attitude: Brian and Jake (Signals Music studio). The latter has done nothing recently though.
Yes, every lesson that I've ever done on CAGED will work on a 7-string. A 7-string just adds a low B-string, so just ignore that one, and you've got yourself a standard 6-string guitar 😁
Brian, your numbering system does conflict with the nashville numbering system, yeah? Like in Nashville, if you're in a minor key, the tonic chord is the 1, but in your system, the tonic would be the 6, yeah? I'm not smart enough, now, to actually use either of these systems, but Nashville makes more sense, or is... more useful for understanding/communicating/collaborating is it not, because it is describing the actual chord progression in a tonic agnostic way, even a major/minor agnostic way. Like the 5 chord will always be the fifth chord from the tonic, like you can start at 1 and count up to the 5 through the scale shape, whether the key is major or minor, yeah? Whereas in your system, the 5 chord is not always the 5. If the key is major, it'll be the 5, but minor it'll be... uhm, I don't know! 6=1, 7=2, 1=3, 2=4, 3=5... the fifth chord will be the 3? Right? That's a bit confusing. Perhaps if you internalize the number shifting pattern? That translation/memorization is to receive the benefit of only considering 12 keys rather than 24? Thanks for all of your free teaching here on RUclips. God bless you in all that you do.
I HV TO STUDY THE CIRCKE, IVE IGNORED IT. I. LIKE TO PLAY RHYTHM nd SOLOING A BIT, LIKE. PRIDE AND JOY.....I DID PLAY THAT OWITH ONE ON ONE TEACHER IN 2008-9. BUT!!! I ASKED ABOUT ThE PENTAS!!! STEVE, TEACHER, JUST WROTE ME OUT THE TABS TO SOLO IN. I BROUGHT MY STONES, BEATLES AND BLUES BOOK INTO MY LESSONS. I CHOSE SONGS, MUDDY....BUDDY..HOOKER... HE WROTE THE TABS AND I USED BENDS. NOW!!!! I KNOW MUCH MORE. IT ONKY TOOK ME 57 YRS.
I'm gonna keep bothering you to add a tip jar (Venmo or something else) . If you played at a bar, I would expect you would get paid AND have a tip jar. Its not a "donation", its an appreciation for what you do. (I know I'm a pain in the ass)
Interesting. Learn the scales, chords targeting well and throw in some blues licks in style of T-Bone Walker and C. Berry or Chet Atkins, then you will get closer to solos a la Hotel California or Sweet Child o'Mine... Thanks Brian

Check this video out...this is the Roman numeral system vs the Nashville system 😁 ruclips.net/video/VeIQTAE8YU0/видео.html

I'm gonna keep bothering you to add a tip jar (Venmo or something else) . If you played at a bar, I would expect you would get paid AND have a tip jar. Its not a "donation", its an appreciation for what you do. (I know I'm a pain in the ass)
Think 1 4 5 6 , numbers, not letters.
Interesting. Learn the scales, chords targeting well and throw in some blues licks in style of T-Bone Walker and C. Berry or Chet Atkins, then you will get closer to solos a la Hotel California or Sweet Child o'Mine... Thanks Brian
i bet now u gotta state the obvious cuz the one guy who thinks he knows more theory than everyone else ...lol
