Randy Mamola - Ahh The Championships...Don't Go There!

- Randy Mamola tried time and time again but that world title just kept eluding him. The 500cc MotoGP World Championship title was out of reach but ever so close. He finished in 2nd place in the world championship four times. That did not stop him from becoming one of the best riders, though; He was recently named MotoGP legend to become one of the few 27 who has ever made it to the hall of fame.
He earned his spot in the MotoGP hall of fame for what he accomplished on the track and what he did after retiring from racing. His performances on track were amazing: 13 Grand Prix Victories and 57 podiums in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. He made all the accomplishments while riding for several manufacturers namely Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, and Cagiva.

After his retirement, he demonstrated how dedicated and passionate he was about road racing and motorcycling. He even set up a charity organization to provide health care to remote areas in Africa. So why did he never claim a world championship title? What was stopping him from achieving every racer's dream? To get the picture, let’s look at his racing career.
Randy was interested in music growing up, and at the age ten, he was even in a band, but that changed when he was 12. He became interested in motorcycle racing and idolized Kenny Roberts, the motorcycle racer from California. He started participating in dirt track races in Northern California, which made Yamaha sponsor him when he was 14. He then put all his focus on road racing as Ron Grant, a former racer, coached him.
In 1977 he received his first international spotlight after Grant took him to the New Zealand Marlboro series to compete, and he impressed the onlookers.
He graduated from high school in 1977 and began competitions professionally in the AMA road racing championship for the 250cc category and completed 2nd behind David Eme on the overall standings. He went ahead and claimed the 250cc AMA road racing championship in 1978 and began showing a resemblance to Kenny Roberts, making him earn the name “Baby Kenny”. Randy’s great performance got him a place on the American team, and in 1979, he participated in the Transatlantic Trophy Match races. The transatlantic races put British racers against the top-ranked American racers with 750cc bikes in a race series in England which comprised a six race series event. Randy was in the 250cc category, and wasn’t expected to do well on a 750cc bike, but that wasn’t the case. The observers were surprised when Randy completed the series as a rider with the second highest points right behind Mike Baldwin, also a fellow American.

Were you a fan of Randy Mamola in his 500cc days - let us know your thoughts in the COMMENTS BELOW...
I remember him when he was starting back in his time very good smooth determined racer very focused one good racer,
I can remember going to Loudon as a kid my best friends Tom we used to go to the races to watch his brother mack McGinnis and Scott Horton race but I do remember Randy and Kenney Roberts were there racing also I was 12 or thirteen but to witness those two icons racing great memories
The best rider never to win a 500 championship. 2nd to sheene, lawson, rainey, Roberts, Spencer, gardiner........that's good company!
@@keithlemoine7468 One of the best for sure! 👍
@@kevinshea2097 That would have been great to experience Kevin - Randy sure was a fan favourite...always got the crowd going! 🏍🏍👍
Randy was the best rider never to win a championship. What an entertainer!
Randy Mamola is an absolute legend. The greatest rider to have never won the World Championship.
Even tho Randy never won a 500 gp championship to me he is a champion definitely one of the most unique riders to ever grace the 500 gp scene. and yes well deserved moto gp legend honors.
I agree Kevin Shea...he was an all-rounder, just bad luck he never got a championship., a brilliant racer and ambassador of the sport - Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
What a great human being who gave back to the children ❤
Randy Mamola was very loved in Goiânia. From 1987 to 1989 he was very successful in Brazil, especially among us Goians. We would really appreciate it if he visited the city again, as he has never been forgotten here. Who knows, maybe at a Stock Car stage he will give us this gift 😊😊
Great racer ! OUTSTANDING Human being ! Enough said .
Couldn't say it any better - thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
A great rider, especially in the wet, he was my favorite GP rider and seems like a genuinely nice person.
Randy is more legend than others who has won one, three and even four championships. More riders as Randy, and Motogp will become undoubtably the greatests show on earth
I was there when Randy made his European debut, at the Transatlantic trophy races. There was no denying. He was good.
But he came across as a precocious brat. But by the time he retired. He was truly the people's Champion.
And well deserved too. A top bloke full of character & passion & a Great ambassador for the sport.
He was one of the last old school Grand Prix racers, His 100mph wheelies always cheered me up, I saw him ripping through the pits in an Testarossa, he's a legend in these parts...
I know...those wheelies he pulled were awesome, would cheer anyone up - thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
I watched most of the 1986 Belgian GP at Spa from the bus stop chicane, and Randy's performance that day was absolutely incredible given the soaking wet conditions!
I remember the times Mamola was racing , he was my favorite, because of his character , his results of course, but most of all for his personality, and still nowadays i follow him on his social account... he is truly a legend, and to me he had an impact on motogp just as much as the legendary #46, thank you Randy for all those nice races
i remember that save at 605 ,the stuff of legend and for me an old dude who has been watching for years R.M you in my humble opinion are an absolute legend .thankyou for being you
I was always a fan of Randys' In addition to his riding I liked his attitude. He seemed a little carefree but I an certain he was under a lot of pressure. He just seemed like a good guy.
Randy was a fantastic racer, he reminds me of wee Dani Padrosa...fast, talented and entertaining, but just like Dani becoming runner up in 2007, 2010 and 2012, they both came up against fierce competition. Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
Randy Era puro Epectaculo,En Carrera y cuando Terminaba,y daba lo mismo en el puesto que quedara siempre sonriendo y dispuesto a la broma.GRANDE Y BUENA GENTE. SALUD LEYENDA.
I loved Randy. A true warrior.
Amazing to learn more about those riders who are almost forgotten.
Yea I love looking back over their careers, they were as tough as they come. Thanks for your comment 👍
@@motoplusgp keep it up!!!
A legendary racer of my time.
Mamola was one of the most spectacular riders ever to race a motorcycle!!
Sheene, Mamola, Swantz, Rossi, not many personalities like that anymore.
You've got that right, they poured their heart and soul into their racing. Thanks for your comment! 👍
Fearless and as fast as anyone✊🏻😎👌🏻
You bet - he was able to stay with the best! Thanks for your comment 👍🏍️
Met Randy Mamola twice. 28 years apart. Quite the MAN !!
I went to high school with him in Santa Clara Ca
A talent like Randy comes around once in a lifetime unfortunately for him it came along in Roberts, Spencer and Lawsons lifetime
I really believe Randy is the most loved racer in the history of racing. I never heard of anyone who hated him and that goes for fans and riders. Giving away money to charities when they didn't make a whole lot of money. I have more respect for that man than any other rider just edging out Nickey Hayden. And what about that smile.
He has a heart of GOLD! For sure his fans loved him, his team and riders he competed against had much respect for the guy! Yea he had one of the best radiant smiles in the paddock. Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
I agree, Randy is the man but the loss of Nickey upset me a lot, he is sorely missed.
@@davapod Shocked me too, Nicky will always be missed around the paddocks ❤❤
Randy...one of the best ever..and my Hero...!!!
I grew up watching all these 2 stroke legends. Real men real racers hard as nails and beautiful machines. I can still smell them. 👍
I loved that era, for sure the 500cc boys were as tough as you get! Yea that 2 stroke smell, brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
Watched him race the cagiva a fantastic era of bike racing.
Vero pilota, oggi non esistono più. 👍♥️💪💪
He has a huge amount of talent, love Mamola. He was always epic to watch, and a nice guy to boot. I would have loved to do a lap with him on the back of that pillion ready Ducati moto GP bike, though my leathers would need to be sent for immediate cleaning.😂
Yea he was the real deal Randy! He raced against the best, always entertained and rode his heart out. Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
Randy use to be my neighbor on Bennett rd. As a kid he would always do Wheelie up our big hill. He also had a side cart for his dog one one of his bikes. We idealized him
Don’t you mean Bennett Avenue?
I went to Buchser high school with him in 1977
@@frankflstf do you happen to know Brad Lamela?
@@gs1100ed no. Off of cordilleras in Redwood City CA
What a guy one of my heroes tiocfearla Randy 💪🏻
Legend
That's for sure! 🏍️👍
The Buzz Aldrin of motorcycle racing
He was dynamic
He sure was...🏍️👍
Randy Mamola and Dani Petrosa ....two of the greatest that never were world champs ....but both great!
Bea Arthur from tv show golden girls was a big fan of Randy's
Didn't know that! Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
i think she was a US Marine ,these people have so much character
Roberts, Spencer, Lawson, Gardner, Lucci etc stopped him but he was a great rider and fun to watch ! 👍
I think you were mistaken Eddie Lawson didn't ride for Honda until 1989 so mamola and him never were teammates at Honda
Sometimes I've thought about Randy Mamola it definitely was not being fast enough but could be that it could have been his riding style could have been hard on tire wear and just burning up his tires faster than the other riders that beat him . Just a 🤔 thought
met randy at a bar and asked him if he knew what a 2 stroke was. i had a 750 triple, he told me who he was and i said then i guess you know what a 2 stroke is
They rode similar Yamahas in '87
Like noriyuki haga, never won a championship, but was the best.
For the 1985 Moto Gran Prix season Rothman sponsored Honda provided Randy Mamola , Ron Haslam and Wayne Gardner with inferior three cylinder 500cc machines compared to The four cylinder bikes of Freddie Spencer .
In my humble opinion they were under team orders only as support riders.
Can't argue with you there. I believe if Randy had been given the proper bike beneath him...at that time, there would have been no stopping him claiming a world title...maybe even a few! Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
@@motoplusgp Yes I totally agree Randy was capable of doing better if only his machine were of equal status.
None the less, his stylish riding , was spectacular, on and beyond the limit ,negotiating turns at times with only one foot on the pegs .
Last proper character in MotoGP a fantastic rider and charismatic which apart from Rossi possibly
Mamola = Dovizioso Legends in a different way.
For sure Simon - thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
Roman Emperor was another rider that the 500 elude him
don't think he really cared to take the championship, he was a showman and young, too young.
Let’s face it .. Rossi stole a lot from Randy & Schwantzy.
No such championship as the 500GP motogp...
MotoGP started in 2002 long after Randy had quit..
Good rider.... but lacked that 'It' factor that champions have, that certain aura about them, he just didn't seem like championship material and he wasn't. Still a good solid rider though.
For sure he was a good rider...always on the tail of the champs, but just missed out. Thanks for your comment 🏍️👍
The competition was so fierce
I saw him Run a 2 seater or 2 people At the Indianapolis moto GP
