  • Hey everyone!
Today's tutorial is all about how to fix blurry photos in Lightroom and Capture One. I thought I'd run through some really simple adjustments that you can apply to blurry images & help regain a bit of detail.
This tutorial also shows a comparison of sharpening photos in Lightroom vs sharpening photos in Capture One. I thought it might be interesting to see the final product in both programs!
    Hope you all enjoy. 😊

I never try to regain detail in my slightly blurry images. I really dont like the over-sharpened look it tends to get, so I go the opposite way. I remove contrast, remove clarity and maybe add some grain to get that more intentional retro vibe. However I personally dont mind somewhat blurry photos like this. Especially not motion blur.

Hi Kayleigh. Thanks for the video, but a couple of questions. (1) Where does this sharpening process fit in the workflow? Is this after the Basic panel when you've adjusted exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, contrast, white, blacks? (2) I'm a bit confused. I'm not much of a portrait photographer, but it seems as if I've "religiously" heard to NOT increase texture yo the skin in a portrait - that to do so is actually unflattering to a model - that the soft skin look is preferable (not silky and overly smoothed, though). I'm nowhere near a professional portrait photographer, but has the professional thinking changed as it relates to texture and skin processing.
I do appreciate the guidance here and the step-by-steps!
P.S. When you are adding to sharpening, do you also hold down Option with Masking to bring out the Black White overlay to show the areas where you want the sharpening applied? Is that appropriate in this process.
    Thanks so much!

No worries at all, this is actually a tricky question! Usually on regular photos I would leave sharpening until the very end stages of retouching as it can lower the quality, however it really depends on how blurry an image is. If it is like the one in the video, I would do those adjustments first in Capture One as it's really needed and we're essentially trying to improve the quality of the image, and I'd rather apply that at the RAW processing stage. (I would also try to implement this first before adjusting exposure, etc.)
Texture on skin is also really dependent on the image and subject. For beauty photography, I prefer to have a greater deal of texture to work with when processing, if the skin is too soft it often doesn't come across as well with these types of images. There is a balance that needs to be met though, and it will likely be unflattering to increase the texture too much for some subjects.
You can absolutely use the black and white overlay for sharpening if it helps! However these days I usually just go by eye in terms of what looks good at first glance. 😊

Haha, totally understand! These sliders are just some really simple ways to help with blurry images, but there’s also a few more detailed methods in Photoshop you can use too 😊
