Fun fact: This Episode is now as old as Double Dragon 3 was, when it was recorded(15 years). We reached the point where old AVGN episodes are more of a blast from the past than the actual games were back then.
now THAT makes me feel old. my fave episode was street fighter 2010 the final fight, which is now 12 years old, yikes!

This game was so freaking hard. My neighbor and I spent weeks trying to beat this as kids. It got to the point where if we didn't have all four characters alive by the time we got to Rome, we would just reset the game even if we had three guys left. I think we spent a week trying to beat the mummies alone. Decent ending...beat it once and never dared try again.
The ninja character had shurikens. Nice to have ranged attacks in this game, even if only limited use.
The arcade machine was a son of a b. Like credits for weapons in a beat em up
Yes, the mummies were the worst.
I thought it was funny that in the newest Double Dragon game(DDNeon) they had a boss character named Bimmy. The legacy of Bimmy lives on
This was a classic case of a mistake being made into something later as damage control, whether it is in serious or joke form. Such events have happened many times.

ah yes, the birth of the legend bimmy
Chin is extremely powerful and useful, he can kill final boss very easily with his claws.
+Martinoz O Not even 1.2 billion fuckin' ugly reds can stand a chance! You don't fuck with Chin!
+Martinoz O In fact, I would go so far as to say that once you have Chin, every other character is redundant because he's so much stronger than all of them that they're all just useless by comparison. His punches are like twice as strong while being just as fast.
Now sure, his foot speed is the slowest, but that's really not important in a side-scrolling beat-'em-up game where you can just sidestep everything anyway. Ultimately, every enemy has to walk in front of you to try to actually hurt you, and that's when they all die horribly against Chin.
***** Only his foot speed is slow, which is almost completely irrelevant in a side-scrolling beat-'em-up because you can just move to the side to avoid everything forever. His palm strikes are extremely quick, and they completely outdamage every other character.
Chin is actually brokenly OP. When I played that game, I had to avoid using him at all if I wanted it to be challenging.
I actually found the ninja completely useless when I played it. He was the only character I couldn't find a point to. It worked out for me as Chin >> Jimmy/Billy >>>> Weak Ninja Guy Whose Name I Couldn't Even Bother to Remember.
He was great if you wanted to do parkour instead of actually fight, though.
+Martinoz O You mean NAILS XD
2:48 "Bimmy isn't even a real name!"
Says the guy named Bimmy.
The challenge in the game was utilizing the strengths and managing the weaknesses of the characters. Chin for instance had a much deadlier punch than either of the Lee brothers. Just one round of punches from Chin would be enough to kill most regular opponents, including Ranzou's ninjas. He was slow yes, but he also had the most bars on the health meter. Ranzou by contrast had the least bars but was very fast, and had some cool moves. He also had better ranged attacks which would prove to be very helpful in the fight against the mummies. Also Ranzou's AB + A/B attack knocks the opponent down in front of him and this has a tactical advantage in the fight against Marian. The other characters' AB +A/B attacks sends the opponent flying away from them creating distance - something you don't really want in the final fight given the number of ranged attacks Marian uses as well as her tendency to teleport across the room. If memory serves me correctly, even Ranzou's jump has a tactical advantage since he would reach the ground slower than the other two characters.
This guy gets it.
"Bimmy and Jimmy" LMMFAO 😂😂😂😂😂

This game is an underrated classic. I love AVGN but I firmly differ from him on this one. DD III is hands down the best entry in the series. If you bother to learn the game (he calls Chin useless; two of his punches are about as powerful as Billy's nunchuck strike) it gives you everything you need to beat it. Also you do get a continue once you make it to Japan (level 3). I encourage you to revisit this one if you're a fan of the series. Hit gamefaqs for a few tips and kick some ass.
Just goes to show that some of James' best episodes are some of the simplest, like this one. Only 4 minutes long, no special effects, no high definition, not even any onscreen time for him. Yet it's hilarious and one of the best. I wish James would do more episodes like this. Forget all the special effects and 20 minute runtimes, just make simple, hilarious, lo-fi episodes like this. Plus they're so much less work for him. I'd rather have him crank out a couple of these per month than one lengthy 'big budget' AVGN episode every 3 months. Just sayin'.
Great post.
I still think his best video of all time was the tribute to Nintendo Power. Talk about a nostalgia trip.
Kiel9382 dear nintendo power editor: what the fuck is your problem??
I actually agree with you 100%. I love AVGN mostly for the actual game commentary sections. I'm not necessarily criticizing him for having other kinds of content, but just for me, these types of episodes are my favorite.
John Noonan I actually think some of his Big budget episodes can be great: I really like Rob the Robot, Crazy Castle, Megaman Games and heck, even Paperboy

This probably isn't news to anyone who's a Double Dragon fan, but in Double Dragon Neon, you encounter enemies who are failed clones of Billy and Jimmy, but their names are Bimmy and Jimmy, and they yell out their names like Timmy on South Park. I thought that was pretty funny when I saw it.

@Huub83 Drums Same, loving the drum covers :)
I remember spending a lot of time with my brothers on this game when we were kids. And damn was it hard. We got past that ninja boss (I think he was the 3rd boss) only twice, only to get to a platform level with impossible jumps, and fall down pits for some instant game overs.
However, as hard as it was, we had a lot of fun back then.
Here almost 14 years later!
Someone should tell James about the new Double Dragon Neon game on Steam. I don't expect him to review it, but since he's a fan of the DD games I feel like he should know about it.
He should also play Double Dragon: Wander of the Dragon
because it's a pile of shit.
Chin is a killing machine. Once you get him, game becomes much easier. It still sucks though, because you only have one life, and final boss is extremely tough
He can take out those ninjas with only one combo attack. That dude is dynamite.
Against the reds, Chin is a killing machine
I have a huge Respect at the dedication that you have going on for years on doing, editing and acting the videos, helped me to launch my own comedy show spanish style once again. Thanks James. Congratulations.
One of my all time favorite games.
Actually Chin is very useful if you know how to use him. Just punch every enemy and you'll see how fast you get through the mission.

It would be even more hilarious if the names would've been Bimmy and Jilly hahahaa! :D
There's actually a combination attack you can do in 2 Player Mode that is ridiculously good. If both players do the spin kick near each other, you get a near-invincible double spin kick.
Also, the trick to using Chin is getting in close and unleashing combos. Once you get his claw power-up, he's pretty good.
Chin from Hong Kong 97??

Ah, it's been I while since I last saw this video. Little Bimmy is already in middle school.
1:20 was some of the most epic shit ever XD
True story: After many hours trying to beat this game, I finally made it to the last level and had Bimmy accidentally fall off a cliff. In a nerd rage... I zapped this game in the microwave. I was quite younger then. Now that I'm much older.... meh, no regrets, I would do it all over again. BTW - I'm sure some of you are curious... It took 3 seconds in the microwave before we heard small "pops" from the cartridge and the game was fried. We popped it in the console and the screen was just an 8-bit pixelated mess with a loud buzz sound. Thank you Double Dragon 3 for these fond memories.
hellish
Did your mom/dad noticed any of that?
RIP Bimmy
Maybe its too late but why is it WE
3:38 You don't f*** with chin!
Great video. Tough game, and spot on with spin kicks. Jump flipping and the king fu guys punches carried the game. Took a couple years to beat.

Seriously, what is James' problem with cutscenes, even small conversations? It's funny since he praised the ones in Ninja Gaiden, but in every other game, they apparently break the pace for him. He's the reason why old time DuckTales fans dislike DuckTales Remastered because of its cutscenes and conversations.
Well if I wanted to read I wouldn't be playing a game. I love the cutscenes in modern games though.
its the way the cutscenes are made. if its just a still image, then of course its annoying. theres no movement going on.
I guess because this is a beat 'em up, so the action is essential to the experience. And these "cutscenes" are just text scrawling across the bottom of the screen while the characters freeze. It's a bit annoying here. The cutscenes in the remastered Ducktales are awesome, however! With the great voice acting by all the original cast and onscreen action, I found it very enjoyable to see how they made the story more complex. I understand it got under some people's skin (mainly the retro "purists," which I find to be a borderline hipster movement. Sorry, Mike Mattei...). But it's definitely not comparable to the crappy exposition in this game.
It's mostly due to the fact that games like Ducktales or Double Dragon weren't created with cutscenes in mind. They were straight-forward, arcade-inspired games. Because of this, the addition of dialogue or exposition to the games often feels "off." These segments hamper the momentum being built by the gameplay, and give the games a much more juddery feel than they should have.
Basically, they get in the way.
Ninja Gaiden and the like were built with those scenes in mind. The Tecmo Theater stuff was a payoff for beating a hellishly hard level, and something fans could really look forward to. They framed each act and got players pumped to tackle whatever impossibly hard horror awaited.
Basically, cutscenes aren't necessarily bad, but there's a time and a place for everything.
U agian??
Imagine if your parents named you "Bimmy"
So THAT's what Chin, the ultimate weapon, the relative of Bruce Lee, the one that will wipe out all the 1.2 billion fucking ugly reds, looks like.
2:34 Bimmy
THE PASSION of the narration is just poetic. Simply awesome.
The Nerd's theory about Nintendo wanting to make "Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones" more realistic seems *somewhat* plausible! 🤓
I had a lot of fun with Double Dragon 3. What about the old lady that had one of the stones the whole time?
You also actually fought her in the arcade version of the game too.
Next time: Billy and Jilly
bimmy and jilly
The flickering isn’t really a flaw, but a tactic most developers used to bypass the technical limitations of the NES. The nes can only display I think 8 sprites at once. So if a 9th sprite needs to be on screen, they will flicker. For example, sprite 8 will turn on, and sprite 9 will turn off. Then right after 8 turns off and 9 turns on, so that there are never more than 8 sprites at a time.
I actually liked this one more than 2 because all the attacks were in the front, the world travel aspect, and the flip head grab toss move. I did finally hook up a game genie, set it up with infinite weapons and nunchuck my way through it. May have beat it legit once or twice but yeah it's hard.
14 years later, AVGN became game. Awesome.
Chin is a beast, just look at what he can do in Hong Kong 97.
Like, dying in one hit?
The last 10 seconds was the best. I fucking replayed that part so many times because it's so funny. I'm not gonna tell AVGN what to improve upon, let the nerd be himself. His old episodes, he never felt like he had to prove anything or to be funny, he was just natural. I fucking love James. I loved him for over 6 years.
I forgot he used to call himself 'The Angry Nintendo Nerd'. Oh, nostalgia!
If I ever get a dog, I'm naming it Bimmy.
His pic got a dog on it so i guess he did

The all time favourite game of childhood and i still play it.I've played many NES games, but this is the one i never get bored of playing over and over again. There are many...and i mean many cool moves in this game which avgn didn't mention, also u get to use the ninja after you beat him.The difficulty level is just enough so that it's intermediate, not very difficult that you wouldn't want to play over and over again or too easy.AVGN reviews are more of a humour then seriousness.(And i mean no offence).FIGURE OUT ALL THE MOVES AND YOUR GOING TO LOVE THIS GAME.
I really love the picture art on the cartridge

Kola18_97 yup
The first AVGN episode I ever watched. Ah, memories.
The original Double Dragon is still one of my favorite NES games...
And its soundtrack is one of the best game soundtracks ever
not going to lie... this was my favorite Double Dragon game. super hard and had the special characters.
Yeah, it's pretty much not a singleplayer game. We actually kicked that midget's ass and wasted the ninja, unfortunately I don't really remember what goes on beyond that but the game was really fun.
DD3 was a downer from two. Except for the trap room in DD2, it went from a beat em up to a platformer!
Back to DD3, the first acquired character is very slow, but his punch really strong. And the weapons accessible from the select screen are useless. The final boss is really cheap, cheaper than Darth Vader's Apprentice in Soul Calibur. DD3 is hard, but not as cheap as the jumps you have execute in DD2.
i hate that room. it would probably even be challenging if u were playing as Mario -- a character designed for a platformer -- but they give u Billy & Jimmy, who don't have platformer dynamics. i rarely made it past that room as a kid.
DrJuice1 billy and jimmy? dont you mean bimmy and jimmy?
The bimmy and jimmy thing killed me lol
Anyone else remember the typo as Billy?
How'd they make a mistake like this?! Billy isn't even a real name! We all know it's Bimmy and Jimmy!

Dark Quasar Double Dragon 1 for NES is ass. Double Dragon for Master System and Arcade is awesome
I have to disagree. Compared to the arcade version, yeah. It was ass. But if you think of it as its own game, it holds up pretty good! Now, I have to admit that I'm a bit biased here, as I played the NES version before I played the arcade version.
