  • Just Fledged Young Jackdaw Bird, still not so good at flying, but he can swim!
Young jackdaws, like many bird species, go through a process called fledging, which refers to the stage when they leave the nest and begin to fly independently. Some will call these birds crows. Jackdaws are a species of bird that belong to the crow family, Corvidae. They are closely related to crows and ravens, but they are generally smaller in size. The common name "jackdaw" is derived from the words "jack," meaning rogue or thief, and "daw," which is an imitation of its call!
During the fledging period, which typically occurs after about four to five weeks, jackdaw chicks become capable of flying and are no longer dependent on their parents for food and care. However, their parents continue to provide them with food for another four weeks or so, ensuring a smooth transition to independence.
You may observe family groups of jackdaws during this period. The adult birds slow their flight to allow the young to follow, and the young birds often follow their parents, sometimes even getting lost and joining other family groups. It is an important time for the young jackdaws to learn from their parents and develop their flying and foraging skills.
While just fledged young jackdaws are capable of flying, they are still quite vulnerable. They face various predators, including birds of prey like the Goshawk, as well as mammals such as pine Martens, dogs and house cats. These predators pose a threat to the young birds as they navigate their new environment and learn to fend for themselves.
On average, jackdaws have a life expectancy of around five years, but they can live for up to 18 years. Their longevity depends on factors such as predation, disease, and availability of food and resources in their habitat.
This baby bird also jumped in the water, which sort of freaked him out. He was able to fluttering to the banks and crawl out, back onto land and into the sun, where one of his parent jackdaws waited for him.
