    It is a delicious dish. Very tasty. I've made it several times. It will take way less time to prep it, if you’d use a mandolin to slice potatoes not only faster, but evenly.
    Also: it is very easy to mix all at once the potatoes with the béchamel sauce in a large bowl and then spread them evenly in the baking dish. Being practical always helps.

      @ivanagoga1 Disaster struck when the lady added the Worch sauce. What an offense to a French dish. Why is it needed anyway? We Americans cannot survive without mixing food and chemistry.
      Suggestion from my mother's wise and tasty recipe:
      Add a layer of hard boiled egg cut in rounds between two layers of potatoes
      And optionally sprinkle some nutmeg powder before serving

    My grandmother who is long deceased made Scalloped Potatoes the same as this recipe except for the cheese. She’d tell my mother, “We’re not making au gratin, or any potato dish that calls for cheese.” She was Hungarian & would add genuine imported Hungarian paprika. It was delicious!

Salt and pepper it and slide it in the oven. Don't forget , 2 garlics cut and smashed and evenly distributed throughout your scallop tators. Yummy...

      Great question. After I peel my potatoes I wash them always. Sorry if i didn't say that or show it. And for this recipe I washed them. But I do not wash again after I slice them. I feel for this type of recipe the starch benefits it because its a natural thickener.
      Also I do soak my potatoes when I'm making french fries to get rid of the starch since i am frying them. Also The other time i soak potatoes is when i peel them early in the day BUT leave them whole and so I put them in water so they don't turn brown.

    The onion & milk sauce looks like a delicious gravy (before the cheese) yum. I love every kind of potatoes (french fries are least favorite) as I only eat them when in a fast food restaurant & they are usually BLAH. This dish looks delicious!

  • @barbgillett728
    @barbgillett728 11 месяцев назад +4

    I do mine about the same but it's easier to cut the potatoes in half and lay them on the flat side to slice, also I like dicing the onions because then you don't get long strings hanging from your mouth. When everything is ready to go in the baking dish I mix it all up in a big bowl and dump it in. Also I do a teaspoon of bouillon powder in 3 cups of milk and heat that. Toward the end of baking time I sprinkle more cheese and paprika on top. Just sayin', that's how I do it because I have no patience.

    When I make scalloped potatoes, I slice onions just like you did, but I don’t sauté them. You can just place all the sliced potatoes and onions in the baking dish, then pour the sauce on top. It comes out delicious, and you don’t have to worry about running out of sauce. The sauce does cover all of the potato and onion mixture while cooking. Also, scalloped potatoes don’t have cheese, AuGratin potatoes do!! I looked it up a few days back as I wanted to know what the difference between the two was! You actually made AuGratin potatoes!! I’ve never tried using bouillon or Worcestershire sauce. I’m going to try both next time I make this dish. I bet your version has more flavor than mine does!!

      @terrilandry1313 Thank You So Much for your comment and for subscribing and watching my videos. You are absolutely right about the cheese. Traditional scalloped potato's do not include cheese in the recipe. I just like to add the extra flavor so I did add the cheese. It is not super cheesy it just added more creaminess that is why I just added a little. But your right a Au Gratin potato's include cheese in them. I will get an au gratin recipe up soon. And thank you for the tips on how you make yours, I appreciate it!

    I find it shortens the baking time by par boiling the potatoes and while they are boiling I make a thin white sauce. Layer the potatoes, pour half the sauce to cover the potatoes. Add another layer of potatoes, the rest of the.e white sauce and sprinkle whatever grated cheese you like. Bake in the oven about 45 minutes or until a fork goes in . But easy on the onions. But I chop the onions finely. Or omit the onions

      @@healthyrelationshipsquotes2422 Hi, yes you can make the night before. The next day take it out of the refrigerator for at least 5 to 10 minutes to get to like a little more room temperature. And then I would cook it covered in the oven at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. This way it can come up to the temperature without overcooking it, but of course taste it after that 20 minutes and see if it needs more time in the oven. You're just looking to get it warmed up and heated. That's how I would do it. I hope that helps.

    This might be a silly question, but could you just dump the sliced potatoes into the sauce, mix it all and then dump it all in the casserole dish? Seems like it would be less fuss. Or would that mess something up?

    • @whatsonmyplate-olgapapag
      @whatsonmyplate-olgapapag  Год назад +3

      @persnickety5311 Not a silly question at all. Yes, I feel like you can dump the potato's in the sauce and add to the baking dish. You will just need to make sure potato's are layered though. As it cooks the sauce will bubble and cook the potato's. The only thing I wouldn't do is actually place the potatoes in the baking dish and dump the sauce over that. Because when you're layering the potato's it you should have a little bit of sauce in between unless you're cooking it hassle back which that means the potatoes are standing straight up then you can dump the sauce over that way.
      Hope that makes sense. Thank you so much for your question and for watching ☺️
