I was at this performance and loved seeing this video. I first heard Stephanie Trick in 2013 at the Stride Piano Summit at the San Francisco Jazz Center with Dick Hyman and Mike Lipskin where she had equal billing with these stride piano greats. Stephanie (just married) played a couple of sets with Paolo at Monterey in 2014 but they never equaled her solo work. Now she seems to be doing four-hand piano almost exclusively, and Paolo gets top billing. This video captures a moment in her career when she was her generation’s acknowledged master of stride (solo) piano. Today it’s hard to find recordings and live performances of her solo work. Thanks for posting it.
I've seen many videos of her and Paolo together and, while what they do is beautiful, I'm disappointed that he seems to dominate these duets. He's a great player, but she is a much more interesting stride artist.
Stephanie Trick. The Queen of stride piano. Love everything about this video... thanks so much for posting it. The trio is perfect together. Again... Stephanie is Queen! Congratulations.
Vania Setti, Thanks for your comment, it feels like coming from your heart. Yes, those days in Monterey were magic. There were more gigs with Stephanie and Paolo and others that are not posted, have to look into the lot.
And to think that Danny's performance here was just shy of 3 months after donating a kidney to a fan of his . Danny had a reputation before this as a nice guy, but his organ donation to someone he'd only met at music festivals was certainly "over the top."
I've spoken to Danny Coots several times and I can confirm the story is true -- he donated a kidney to a fan. Danny told me this year (2017) that both kidneys are doing well.
I love Stephanie and her talent, but Danny is the most relaxed, laid back drummer I've ever seen. I could watch him and his facial expressions all day.
For some reason Mrs. Trick just cannot play a single wrong note. Laser precision à la Pollini combined with swing à la Oscar. What a wonderful, great artist she is - which I just discovered this very day (finally emerged from that proverbial rock). Wow, just wow... Thank you!
After You've Gone is The right tune to start this koncert with. The Trio form suites Stephanie very Well: She accompanies so good, like a mixture of Fats Waller and Erroll Garner. And I love her stride, both the slow and the fast version. The 3 musicians are obviously enjoying each other's Company and the music. Relaxed, surpricingly good together, like an elderly married couple (ment positively)!! And The Minor Drag, one of my fav records from1929 (the one Fats's "Rhythm" played for the first and only time before recording on board a taxi to the rec. studio. Fats later admitted, that he also composed the tune in the taxi!). And What about James P. Johnson's Harlem Strut? The drummer was perfect there. And her homemade boogie? I could keep on forever. Conclusion: A fantastic koncert!! Stephanie is getting better and better!
Anne-Christine Persson : Thank you for your kind words. Yes, isn't it fantastic? Just turn RUclips on, and you've got a complete koncert with Stephanie and her buddies.
Could you please do a song list with starting times? First time hearing Stephanie - wow. Actually my first time was a few minutes ago with playing St. Louis Blues with her husband - what a clever arrangement that was!
wrt respect to stride how true I made a sarky comment to Paolo wen I heard her play with him. ps I had drunk a pint or two of English ale. I did feel guilty afterwards but as they say IN VINO VERITAS
saw stephanie a month ago and also (6months ago) drummer, coots, with another pianist ... both are outstanding. should not miss them .. very watchable.
Apart from the top class musicianship it is great to see all three musos so obviously enjoying the groove - they are jumpin' ! This is what it is really all about - just makes you want to dance.
00:00 - After You’ve Gone (Turner Layton) 05:16 - The Trolley Song (Martin/Blane) 08:02 - Keepin' Out of Mischief Now (Fats Waller) 11:59 - Rosetta (Earl Hines) 17:18 - The Minor Drag (Fats Waller) 20:52 - Black Beauty (Duke Ellington) 24:55 - Harlem Strut (James P. Johnson) 28:29 - Vive le Boogie Woogie (Lorraine Feather) 32:11 - … ? It's on the tip of my tongue ! ;-) 37:43 - … ? It's on the tip of my tongue ! ;-) 41:35 - Keep Your Temper (Willie - The Lion - Smith) 47:31 - Roll’Em Pete (Pete Johnson)
thank so much for this wonderful video. It's so great to see, hear and real feel the music. Stephanie becomes better and better and we can hope that such musicians will carry on the great tradition off such great music....
What a grand trio. I sincerely hope they get together again along with Stephanie’s hubby. This is the best I have seen and heard. Coots is nutty brilliant and the bass guy is tops.
Cosi giovane, ESSERE UN TALENTO SIMILE CHE HA NEL SANGUE IL JAZZ CON TANTO SWING NON E' COSA DA POCO, la mano sinistra VOLA l'accompagnamento come un orchestra intera, i sincopati sono perfetti !! E' ECCEZIONALE TALENTO, MERAVIGLIOSA MUSICISTA !!!!!
Someone dropped a hint that she had the Fats Waller kind of stride and feel, and I wonder if they were right. Marian McPartland would have had a blast with Stephanie on her Piano Jazz radio show!
Question for Danny Coots ... Why have you abandoned the traditional left-hand 'grip' for sticks and brushes ? Does it perhaps facilitate better your ability to give out a damn good thrashing where it counts ?? !! Keep up the good work !
Fats Waller insisted on a grand piano tuned to A440 in his contracts. You should do the same Stephanie. Also, as others have said, I much prefer you playing solo or with a rhythm section.
I agree about the piano, this was a dry modern upright with dull sound and piercing highs. Upright pianos of about any generation in the 20th century were of better quality. I guess that the venue could rent a grand from the local piano store but that might probably cut the budget. Sad thing is that artists are either underpaid or for the very few who get famous the pay becomes excessive (not really proportional to their talent).
Thanks for uploading. I think this is the perfect formation around this pianist... bass and drum really give it that extra swing. I have to admit I first listened to it on headphones and when I later watched the video, cringed a bit at the moments when the camera pans over to the drummer doing a decent accompaniment while she's busy doing a world class solo off-camera! but thanks again for uploading. what else is in the treasure chest??
As always, love listening to Stephanie! A question I doubt anyone can answer, but ask I shall: Anyone know the make of that piano? For an upright, it sounds VERY good!
I'm glad I'm too old and cynical and world weary and just plain bad to ever get carried away and besotted and enamoured and entranced and beguiled and bewitched and captured by the beauty of a mere mortal lady - else I'd have no chance... no chance at all...
norsktoolmaker88 - Mose Allison was one of a kind. Brilliant though Stephanie is, her chosen piano style cannot really be considered void-filling in this instance.
Thanks Paul Gail for posting the link about Phil Flanagan, a fantastic musician in his own right. Your link led me to this one ruclips.net/video/Mq88onijXg0/видео.html that features Phil and a group of other jazz musicians “after hours,” including Stephanie (between minutes 5:44 and 8:07), but most of the clip is really about Phil, rightly so.
Minor Drag is a real classic supposedly written in a taxi while on the way to a recording session Fats almost forgot about. Then the record labels were swapped with the B side and Harlem Fuss has since been known as Minor Drag.

amen
Totally agree, he stifles her incredible talent.
Finally! Somebody had to say it! They are both great pianists. So tour together; but, perform individually!
Brendan Collins - I agree. The duets are fun, but gimmicky. I like the opening number here much better.
She is Fantastic and excellent. Thanks GOD for giving us such a brilliant woman. She is from another WORLD.
My god!! What a left hand!! For us that play and understand the difficulties, watching this is too good. Thank You Stephanie! What a talent.
I think not many people realize how transcendental in difficulty it is to play the piano like this.
Stephanie Trick. The Queen of stride piano. Love everything about this video... thanks so much for posting it. The trio is perfect together. Again... Stephanie is Queen! Congratulations.

Stefany sei un genio un mostro di bravura
Il mio sogno sarebbe quello di ascoltarla dal vivo
Stephanie Trick is brilliantly good as always. But a drummer is so good, he just killed me!
And to think that Danny's performance here was just shy of 3 months after donating a kidney to a fan of his . Danny had a reputation before this as a nice guy, but his organ donation to someone he'd only met at music festivals was certainly "over the top."

Stephanie Trick is superb on the keyboard, she plays the piano with so much ease!!!
I like the great way Stephanie Trick plays. It is so amazing. I am so looking forward to hearing her performance, live in Neuburg, Germany.
Wonderful Stephanie..she never missed a Trick.🙂🙂
Fabulous ... What a Gal ! - Looks and Talent ! ... and a couple of great guys too, Phil and amazing 'brush-man', Danny. Super concert !
I thought that was Danny Coots on the drums. Stephanie & Danny two of the best I’ve heard, and both very nice people as well.
I love Stephanie and her talent, but Danny is the most relaxed, laid back drummer I've ever seen. I could watch him and his facial expressions all day.
Wonderful performance!
Love this every time I watch it.
One of the most relaxing and enjoyable hours I have spent in years. Kudos to the Stephanie Trick Trio.
Love the drummer. He looks like he is about to fall asleep any minute from the hypnotic effects.
Inspirational 😊

Enough, Jens.
She must have grown up listening to Garner! If he gets in your head he never leaves you. Great going kid!
Absolutely EXCELLENT!!!! Love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just great music, superb piano with just the right backing.
Bella e brava .. un amore!
More, please Stephanie! You have such a distinct voice, I'm always a little sad to see videos of you with other pianists ...

The beauty of relaxation. How she can keep that up. I love it so! What a treasure video.
Yes, we feel the same. Reading other comments as well, reassures us. We were blessed sitting there, capturing the full set in one-go.
That is some next level musical chemistry!!
Unfassbar! Ich könnte ihr stundenlang zuhören und zuschauen!
When I half my Saturday Feast I love to listen and sing along to what I know.
you play really great so you wrote your own boogie that is great you are awesome
Just Excellent!!! beautyful.
You play beautiful Stephanie, I love it!

Stephanie is one of the best pianists around today.
Stephanie is a fabulous Jazz pianist and i cannot resist saying, a very beautiful elegant woman in a classical way. I think she has two brains 🤔😉

I agree. She's better alone than with other pianists.
. . . and, in my view, better without the drums . . .
the piano playing is so refined, like a classical pianist. I think she had professional training before turning to jazz.
She is a trained classical pianist!
She has a music degree from the University of Chicago. You can find RUclips videos of her playing Bach on a huge baroque organ there.
Wow this was great! How do I get on her mailing list for concert info?
Hi Charlie Brown, You'll find the mailing list at this site: www.stephanietrick.com/index.htm
CANDCJ Great! Thank you so much.
Great! But too much camera on the drummer, yes he is good, but Stephanie more camera on your genius playing. Please!!

Stephanie is a great performer, she deserves a better piano. The upright has a very thin sound.
As always, love listening to Stephanie! A question I doubt anyone can answer, but ask I shall: Anyone know the make of that piano? For an upright, it sounds VERY good!
Mad skills... my calves ache...
Wonderful to hear and watch but someone should have told the cameraman who the star of the session was.

Quel est le nom du titre joué dans la minute 33 ? Merci
Le titre joué dans la minute 33 est "Quand Toi et Moi Étions Jeunes, Maggie",
ou bien en anglais "When You and I were young, Maggie".
I'm eighty- six and they are as good "as it gets"
Les paroles de cette chanson sont un peu triste, n'est ce pas?
Liberace eat your heart out. Sorry Liberace 🥲
When Stephanie is alone on the piano, one hears soulful music and does not see sometimes acrobatic perfomances ....
