For about 3 years I saw an old guy cruising his '70 X-100 around western San Francisco-he'd always stop every evening at a "greasy spoon" restaraunt on Taraval street for his dinner and also stop into the Safeway to shop. Man that car had such a presence like NO other vehicle. It was kind of an olive green with black top. That car had a James Bond/Hawaii 5-0 Garret type vibe that I'll never forget. Have not seen it for about 5 years now-he probably passed and some lucky family member got it and likely sold it.
Back in 1969 I worked at the Ford Hazelwood assembly plant where all US Mercurys were built. I bought a brand new 1969 Marauder X-100 Dark Ivy Glamor Metallic with a black vinyl top. Had Dark Ivy bucket seats with a center console. It was equipped with big 429 V8 with a four barrel and put out 360 HP. Traded it in 1971 for a Thunderbird and regretted it ever since (47 year on) and would love to find one just like it for sale. I've owned a LOT of cars in my 71 years and the big, bad Marauder is still one of my top favorites.
I've never even heard of the "X-100" designation, as a big Ford, Lincoln and Mercury buff I really should have known! My brother had a '67 Ford, XL convertible, he too had the 429-ci, he had her tested and she rated 475-hp! She was never beat in a stop light drag race in the 5 years he owner her! WHAT A CAR!
Hi Jeff, Clearly your Brother had a cool car :-) Happy to share a Mercury with you you've learned about. I'm learning al the time from the Care Takers of these cars, and I find that to be so much fun, Lou
From 1950-1986, my father worked for Ford's research lab in Dearborn, MI, and got a new car every year. He had a 1969 Marauder like this one in the same color, maroon, but he ordered it with a white vinyl roof and white interior. In 1970, he ordered another Marauder, but in triple navy (paint, top, and interior). A special, rare car.

I used to own the “little brother” to this car - a ‘69 Cougar XR7. A couple observations... that tilt away steering wheel feature might negate the ‘rim-blow’ feature - where you squeeze a rubber inner strip inside the rim to actuate the horn. Also, this car does not feature the matte black finish on the trunk lid/ inner sail panels -an homage to anti-glare race car hoods and deck lids of the era. It was an option peculiar to the X100 and very striking. Most X100s had it but as you can see on the Marti Report this car is “Delete 2-Tone Paint”. Powder blue cars had an optional dark blue matte finish for the insert. My XR7 also had the rear window defogger option - but it’s not what you may think. Instead of a heating element embedded in the window, it’s actually an electric fan mounted under the package tray that blows unheated air on the back glass above. From the inside it just looks like a speaker grille mounted in the middle of the package tray. Lastly those wheels are actually special Kelsey Hayes units that were specific to the X100. This car was super-loaded. Pity it didn’t have the rear blackout panel. But maybe it’s because the original owner went with a black vinyl top instead. Thanks for sharing!
My dad had a 2 door '69 Marquis with the 429 Thunderjet engine & that car was a tire fryer! Then, it could turn around and get mid-20's MPG on the highway. Great video on the X-100, Lou!
In 1969 my father and I went to the local LM dealership with his friend's father and son who purchased a Monterey Custom and Cougar XR7 respectively they had the most beautiful dark aqua metallic Marquis I fell in love long story short wen the new models came out that car was still available and wen thay offered it to him for less then the cost of a Monterey he bought it and I loved it and in later years I found one a very rare 2door Ht and I must say those early 429/460 engines were awesome I you floored it from a standstill it would smoke the rear tires like it was on ice first to second shift occurred at just past 50 mph second to high about 108 and then buried the needle below the dashboard unfortunately somewhere about 130 the car kinda hit an aerodynamic brick wall and couldn't go any faster
my parents had a '68 Merc-Park Lane. Same 429. Rode like a comfortable couch!! Luxury galore:) That monster is Sweet!! Thx Lou!! side-note-Pops wasn't happy about me playin with the cigarette lighters in the back seat-ashtrays:)

I was with my uncle in Osage County back in the early 2000s and we went to see a guy for some reason or another and he was working on one of these. It had no hood on. We jumped in and that thing was so fast for as big as it was! Later he told me he was wanted by the F.B.I., like top 20 wanted. Wowzers.

Only seen two or three of these in my life but I remember wanting the newer Marauder when they came out again in 2003. It was really just a beefed-up Grand Marquis/Crown Victoria but it was still a great car but was way beyond my budget. I had a 2001 Crown Vic at the time and I loved it and it was one of the best cars I ever owned. My all-time favorite car was a 1996 Grand Marquis I bought in 2009 with 70,000 miles on it. It was a single owner car and had been garage kept and it looked & drove like brand new :>)

That's was a rare Mercury when new, and it's even more so today. The Marauder was available for only two years, 1969 and 1970. It came in two forms, a regular Marauder, and the X-100, like this one seen here. It, IMO, was the most beautiful looking of all the full-sized Mercurys, with its hidden-headlight front end from the Marquis and its fastback roof from its sister car, the Ford XL. The Marauder shared the 121-inch wheelbase with the large Fords and the station wagons (all other big Mercs measured 124 inches between the wheel centers). Why didn't it sell? As the owner mentioned, it was pricey ($4,091 in 1969 for the X-100; the non-X-100 came in at $3,368, somewhat easier to swallow) and not many buyers saw the justification to prefer it over a Cyclone or a Cougar. Buyers wanted mid-sized cars with big engines (like Chevelle SS's, Pontiac GTO's, or Dodge Chargers). Only 20,709 Marauders were offered over the two years they were built. By 1971, muscle-cars and pony-cars (Mustang/Cougar, Camaro/Firebird, and 'Cuda/Challenger) had become the performance cars of choice, and there was no place left for cars like the Mercury Marauder. (The name would make a return 33 years later on a special high-performance version of the Grand Marquis). Thanks once again, Lou; I'm a subscriber! (12/22/2021)
Hi Geminisixtyfour, Happy to read your a Subscriber :-) Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I believe you're right, if it didn't sell then, I think Mercury performance interested Buyers where buying the Cyclone or Cougar, and customers wanting a big car didn't need the performance, they probable wanted comfort and ride. You're welcome, Lou
These cars were relatively expensive, however they were still priced several hundred dollars below Chrysler 300's, New Yorkers, Olds 98's and Buick Electras.
Plymouth v Ford v Chevrolet, Dodge v Mercury v Pontiac, Chrysler v Buick and Oldsmobile, and Imperial v Lincoln v Cadillac! In the late fifties, it was Plymouth v Ford v Chevrolet, Dodge v Mercury v pontiac, DeSoto v Edsel v Buick, Chrysler v Lincoln v Oldsmobile, and Imperial v Continental v Cadillac! Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler and Imperial, Ford Mercury and Lincoln, and Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac! In the late fifties, it was Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial, Ford, Mercury, Edsel, Lincoln and Continental, and Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac!
Additional comment I remember when these cars were new There were 2 Marauders. The standard One had a bench seat trimmed like a Mercury Monteray Custom It had a 390 2V V8 std. Its base price was just below $3400. Then there is the Maurader X-100. It was trimmed similar to a Marquis. It had a 429 2V V8 Selectshift auto trans and power disc front brakes as std. Power steering was optional. Its base price without options was about $4200. The 4V 429 V8 was optional at about $70.00. It was priced higher than a Marquis but under a Marquis Brougham. The example in this video probably had a sticker of about $5500 as equipped The Magnesium 500 wheels were also standard on the X-100. Regular full wheel covers were std on the base model. They were featured prominently in Lincoln-Mercury dealer showrooms. They were overshadowed by Monterays and Marquis however as the demand for sporty performance full sized vehicles had waned.
Hello why didn’t you ask any questions about that wild INTERIOR??!! Never seen the diamond pattern almost tuck & roll (?) and sure looks like a thick leather??!! But no questions on it, what a shame. Gorgeous iconic car!

The only muscle car with fender skirts. Glad that there are no fender skirts on the 1961 to 1968 Mercury cars. Also they don't make fender skirts anymore on new cars, due to problems, such as it does get rusted, easy to remove the skirts, but hard to put it back when changing the tires because of the tiny brackets to hold the skirts, and even debris does get inside the fender skirts to make it squeak.
You have to add lead to the premium unleaded fuel at fill ups. If not it will beat the hell out of the valves. I would gladly do this to own such a treasure!

I leaned how to drive in 1969 Ford LTD with a 429 4V in it. That car was fast. It was rated 360 HP and burned premium fuel. I believe it got about 8 miles to the gallon.
I heard him say that 4V was for the four barrel carburetor, Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought 2V was two Valve & 3V three Valve & 4V four Valve per cylinder
HI Classsic Ride Society, Glad you're enjoying the Mercurys on this RUclips Channel :-) If you'd like to see them all type into RUclips search "My Car Story with Lou Mercury" and the videos should be available to view,
Ok 4 barrel means 4 venturies inside the carburetor. basically 4 holes to pull in air into the motor. DSO does not mean "dealer special order" but district sales office. Its telling you what dealer ordered the car. The man keeps saying they only made a few. look close at the marti report and it clearly states 5486 were made. I own a 70 x100 and they only made 2646.
I know this is an old comment but my dad had a mint 70 X-100 that I'm buying from him this year. Bottle green, body color hood, column shifter. Hit me up if you want to chat mercs.

since Nov 74 , i have owned a triple black Marquis convertible , If Lincoln made a convertible in 1969 , This Would have to be Lincolns' Flagship signature car ,It had 68,000 miles then , Wonderful chik magnet in those days . great for a drive in movies, and anything life wanted to serve up to a 18 year old kid There are well over 300,000 miles on her now, LOVE that Mercury. She has been in many parades over the decades. The black lacquer shines like a mirror . She is always a head turner with its fabulous coke bottle style hips. It has been in 34 states with me behind the wheel . With a 650 Holley sitting on that 429 we actually consistantly got over 20 mpg at 65 mph going from Louisville down to Dallas and San Antoine , that Holley would quickly bury the speedometer at 120 mph too . but after 15 yrs, the Holley kept siphoning gas and flooding the intake,( a rea l fire hazard) i have a Edlebrock 4 barrel on it now. its nice fat and powerful ,,.and chemotherapy ailments keep me from driving it much .

I used to Cruise in Seminole tx with my friend Wimpy Saldana in a 429 Police interceptor metallic brown with white top glass pack s grager wheels lowered one bad ride haven't seen another one like it again Johnny Cruz those were the days it would run like no end ing
the first X 100 i ever saw that didnt have the anti glare finish on the decklid and without bucket seats and console. Ford also offered a base marauder with a 390. The matte finish could be deleted on the order sheet and was not available with the vinyl roof. The bench seat was standard equipment.
I like the color of this car. I think these were available with a flat black hood. It might have been an option. These were very neat cars and quite significant for the time but expensive to buy and own. Thx Lou.
The Ford had the tops of the fenders in black right up to the windshield and along the base of the side windows up to the C pillar. Very cool look for its day. The Marauder had the whole trunk deck in black.
Someone had one of these on my block when was a kid in Astoria N.Y. A beautiful car. I was mesmerized whenever I saw parked on the street. I even remember the color, A dark green with a black vinyl top and black interior. Very sexy. I always wanted to ask the owner about it but I never saw him and I didn't see it too often. Funny how you remember some things like that. Probably because of the impression it made on me. 🙄
Guess I should have kept mine then I had a 1970 mercury marauder x-100 it was the only one in this color combination dark green poly - with white vinyl roof - white interior - full console with teak wood appliqués always was a show stopper on the street bought it new in 1970 one of a kind bought it in Ossof Motors middle village NY

i was thinking the same thing that this car didnt have a large market? it was to expensive for you kids at the time also in my blue collar area the fathers of the time would almost always by the mid range Buicks olds or chevys as the family car.. never anything like this but it is something of a rare gem

I would like to see inside the trunk and the dash inside the driver's seat does this car have air conditioning and tilt steering and power steering and power brakes
When Dave was explaining what the markings on the air cleaner represented, he said the 4V ment it was a 4 barrel engine. I am pretty sure that ment it was a 4 valve per cylinder V8 engine.
Hi Dennis Brown, You're correct, it's not a 4 barrel engine. The 4V on the air cleaner represents 4 Venturi carburetor or 4 barrel carburetor. Thanks for viewing and picking up on that, Lou
These were extremely rare as I am not sure if I ever saw one in real life. One of my uncle's had a 69 Colony Park wagon, and another had a 69 Marquis convertible. I always liked the look of the Mercury's of this era compared to the Lincoln's. In my opinion, the Lincoln's looked too over the top, especially when they made the grille too prominent.
This car is the Thunder -Jet it had 10.5 to 1 as stated by the first gentleman.429 CJ and SCJ had 11.3 to 1 compression along with different heads, carb, cam SCJ had a solid lifter cam with 780 CFM carb 4 bolt mains. X-100 would get up and go but not the badass motor option.

For being a Ford dealer, this guy doesn't know too much, DSO does not mean dealer special order, it means district sales office, which area of the country the car was produced for.
My guess is only inner circles referred to it as the X-100, plus given the fact that Merc was in the same division as Lincoln, so no problem. It's not like the Kennedy limo was a production car anyway.

My dad worked at a Lincoln Mercury dealership, had the rear end gears change to grand touring gears, and the car was good for 140 miles and an hour top end
From now on, instead of closing the hood when the engine is started, how about leaving the hood open when you start the engine, we'd like to see the engine running.
Hmmm, most times I have the hood open when the engine is started. This is one of my earlier videos, so I'm sure you'll see many more where the hood is open with the engine start. Enjoy, Lou
@@loucostabile Hely Lou, That videographer doesn't know his butthole from first base. He couldn't tell one end of the car from the other. He didn't even point out the four speaker in the door stereo system which was a big deal back then. All he said was 'There's the radio" Didn't bother to ask whether the upholstery was leather or vinyl.
Hi Ener Rivers, Yes this is one of my early videos, and learned to start them and sometimes get a ride. Check out todays uploaded video and let me know what you think, Lou ruclips.net/video/tVlKS-cjKBw/видео.html
The 429 and 460 after 72 were just smogged out engines used to power the bigger Fords and Lincolns. However, this one would have had higher compression, maybe even 4 bolt mains and a Cobra Jet. It definitely would have put out substantially more power than post 72 malaise era 429s..

I used to own the “little brother” to this car - a ‘69 Cougar XR7. A couple observations... that tilt away steering wheel feature might negate the ‘rim-blow’ feature - where you squeeze a rubber inner strip inside the rim to actuate the horn.

In the late fifties, it was Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial, Ford, Mercury, Edsel, Lincoln and Continental, and Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac!
Additional comment I remember when these cars were new
There were 2 Marauders. The standard One had a bench seat trimmed like a Mercury Monteray Custom
It had a 390 2V V8 std. The example in this video probably had a sticker of about $5500 as equipped
The Magnesium 500 wheels were also standard on the X-100. Regular full wheel covers were std on the base model. They were featured prominently in Lincoln-Mercury dealer showrooms. They were overshadowed by Monterays and Marquis however as the demand for sporty performance full sized vehicles had waned.

I leaned how to drive in 1969 Ford LTD with a 429 4V in it. That car was fast. It was rated 360 HP and burned premium fuel. I believe it got about 8 miles to the gallon.
Hi Kevin Owens, Thank you for viewing and sharing detail on your 1st driver :-) Lou
I heard him say that 4V was for the four barrel carburetor, Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought 2V was two Valve & 3V three Valve & 4V four Valve per cylinder
Love these Mercs. I had 65 Monterey Marauder. I miss that car.
I own a 70 x100 and they only made 2646.

since Nov 74 , i have owned a triple black Marquis convertible , If Lincoln made a convertible in 1969 , This Would have to be Lincolns' Flagship signature car ,It had 68,000 miles then , Wonderful chik magnet in those days . great for a drive in movies, and anything life wanted to serve up to a 18 year old kid There are well over 300,000 miles on her now, LOVE that Mercury.

Hi dicarlo57, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou

your right. I was mistaken due to my advanced age
I like the color of this car. I think these were available with a flat black hood. It might have been an option. These were very neat cars and quite significant for the time but expensive to buy and own. Thx Lou.
Hi Terri Bel Bliss, Glad you enjoyed this car and thought it is cool :-) A luxury performance car that you don't see often. Lou
I don't remember if the Marauder had a black hood option, but the Ford Galaxie had a similar version with the black hood. Both cars were very cool.
@@johnnordberg6904 Were the black hoods fiberglass?
@@kennethsouthard6042, I can't say for sure, but don't think they were. Just standard sheet metal.
The Ford had the tops of the fenders in black right up to the windshield and along the base of the side windows up to the C pillar. Very cool look for its day.
The Marauder had the whole trunk deck in black.
Very cool. That must have been intended to be Grandpa's cougar.

The tape slot was the radio dial- it was actually a spring loaded panel that would give way when the tape was inserted

I believe close t0 10.5 compression that year too
radioguy1620 11.5 to one compression for that engine.
Flat top pistons and a low deck height gave that engine a rating of 11.3 to 1 comp. ratio

Hi Bob Bob, I don't know, I'm at quite a few car shows and I'm not seeing them around, Lou
The 429 and 460 after 72 were just smogged out engines used to power the bigger Fords and Lincolns. However, this one would have had higher compression, maybe even 4 bolt mains and a Cobra Jet. It definitely would have put out substantially more power than post 72 malaise era 429s..
Mercury's response (not answer) to the Pontiac Catalina 2+2. Hard to "answer" without an equivalent to the 376hp 421......
The 428 Pontiac was faster than the good old 421 and the 429 was about as fast as the 428 Pontiac .
It was more like Mercury's answer to the Grand Prix. This car was far more luxurious than a Catalina 2+2. Also the 2+2 package was gone by 1969.
