Final Fantasy X, Wild Arms V, Dragon Quest VIII, Persona 4, and Shadow Hearts Covenant are my top five in no particular order.
You have great taste mine would be pretty much the same except I'd replace persona 4 with persona 3
I've always wanted to play Wild Arms 5. Unfortunately, I can't find it anywhere. The Japanese version is easy to find, for some reason.
the only reason i kept my sub for this channel is that you don't follow trends and the general consensus for mere views and likes, you just share games that YOU genuinely love and that's exactly what youtube is for kudos to you bro
10 - Chaos Wars
9 - Xenosaga 3
8 - Tales of the Abyss
7 - Wild Arms 5
6 - Front Mission 5
5 - Persona 4
4 - Growlanzer Heritage of War
3 - Suikoden V
2 - Final Fantasy X
1 - Valkyrie Profile 2
FFX was my favorite hands down, followed by DQ8
Fuck yeah! Certain character interactions like Tidus's strained relationship with his dad had me crying like a little bitch, and years later I still haven't found a female protagonist I would fucking marry as fast as I would Yuna.
Same! Best two rpgs from ps2 no question
FFX is unmatched except by Chrono Trigger.
I'm shocked and elated that Shadow Hearts is finally getting some attention. I adored Covenant when I played it.
don't forget that Penny Blood is being made, the spiritual successor of Shadow Hearts. Sadly it won't have the judgement ring system. I was hoping they would have a pendulum to keep the theme going but apparently not.
@@ivenstormit does look like it has a similar function though
Ar tonelico 1 and 2 are mine, cult classics but super underappreciated. Sure 2 had a rushed localization but it's still such a charming series. While the combat is pretty standard in the first and easy in the second it doesn't change the fact that the world feels incredible and lived in, I'll never forget the first time I reached above the blastline and looked out over the world with it's incredible spritework. And really do I even have to say anything about the music, it's like what even those who haven't played it know it for. Honestly they're probably in my top 10 JRPG's of all time and not just on the PS2.
I have the original suikoden 3 and 5 releases on ps2. Bought them at release. So glad to see them getting some love
I grew up with a ps1 but was too young at the time to understand JRPGs as i was 5 when final fantasy 7 released my first rpg was Pokémon red then my second was final fantasy X i then really got into the JRPGs during the ps2 era and went back and a played a lot of the ps1 JRPGs i missed out on
I was an N64 and Gamecube kid and got in late to the PS2 in like 04. At the time, I was against cell shaded and anime looking games and I wanted full 3D experiences, so it was Final Fantasy 12 that finally ticked all the boxes for me, and I loved it while I passed on lots of other good ones.
I don’t know how Valkyrie Profile 2 flew under my radar at the time, because it has that aesthetic I was looking for of dark, realistic, and detailed textures. Perhaps it’s because it’s a 2 from a 1 I didn’t play and I dismissed it. I hope they can give it a Zodiac Age treatment to it, Zodiac age still looks fantastic because of how good the textures were.
I honestly would put P3Fes and FFX at my own top ten
Both would probably rate in the top 3 (P3Fes will probably take the #1 spot); the story and character development throughout it just blows so many other games out of the water, alongside how the game design often reflected the story and its themes.
I even greatly respect the amount of effort they put into each character feeling like their own person, down to even stocking up their own inventories of healing items they would use in combat (like how Junpei stocked medicine and other items he would use in combat to heal allies without consuming your items). I also loved how characters would have their own interactions without the protag being involved oftentimes separate from their work in S.E.E.S. entirely. They would even upgrade their own equipment at times and give you what they had before if you neglect their gear for too long.
There is just so much in that game that feeds into the tone and its narrative that P4 and P5 does not hold a candle to, and I am so glad to see it get remade since it genuinely is my favorite JRPG, and has so much people overlook or just never notice in it.
Yes, getting tired and not controlling party members can be frustrating if you don't adjust to the tactics system and learn to play with it, but everything in this game just builds towards all of its core focuses and I will always take that over controllable party members who never get tired and stop existing when the protag isn't around (P5 is extremely guilty of this until Royal added the Maruki Sessions with new party members, and still is pretty guilty of party members kinda just; not existing when Joker wasn't around unless the subject of their focus was Joker or a Palace).
I love SuikodenV and Silmeria I hope they do a PS5 remaster like the rumors say and Growlanser HOW is one of my all time favs I still have my collection edition with the watch and art book all of them I still have in mind cond
Love how he says the word "winner" lol
FFX is my second favorite game of all time, making it my favorite PS2 game and my favorite JRPG.
I think he underrates FFX by a lot, especially a few other FF titles as well but I get tired of every other reviewer having the same list so I’m ok with it. His personal preference is why I watch all his reviews because I trust them to be honest and he offers more than generic reviews.
Meanwhile, one of my all-time favorites is nowhere to be seen as usual. Don't worry, Jade Cocoon 2. I'll always love you.
Yes! Dot Hack is finally getting some love! This game had an amazing story that kept me playing at all hours of the night. Sadly, the series has been relegated to become just another high-priced game on collectors lists. Nobody gives that series credit anymore and it's a damn shame.
I got into jrpgs when I was like 16 other than Pokémon my first one was persona 3 I was hooked then went back to play ps1 era ones & been addicted ever since
I agree that Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is a fantastic games. One of the very few i've finished twice, the vast majority of the times i only finish games once and that's it but that game is so good it deserved it, and after so many years i may start a new playthrough once again.
awesome list! wondering if you've ever played the La Blue Girl ARPG back in the PS2 days?
Suikoden III! Also in my top 10. Really enjoyed that one. Had it's issues, but it's a great game. Very memorable for me.
Same I have no idea why I love it so much. One of the few games I will pick up every few years and play all the way through. I guess the pacing is just perfect for me. It’s got a little RNG for replay ability too
My favorite is Mana khemia, this is a spin off from Atelier series, but Mana Khemia took my heart
FFX is so much better than VP2 especially in combat and content. An underrated ps2 game for me will always be arc the lad twilight of spirits and suikoden tactics
I’ll be the judge of that. I just “picked up” both games for my Steam Deck for a first time playthrough of both. This guy has impeccable jrpg taste so I should really like them. His PSX choices have never steered me wrong
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 ehh I agree with him about 50% of the time but he thinks stuff like tales of legendia is the best tales game of all time among other hot takes. Everyone has different tastes though
Im more Valkyrie Profile than FFX, love X-2 though ❤
FF10 looks so good even by today's standards, I've never played it but feel like i need to
Barely fifteen minutes into my first playthrough ever. Rare to play such a celebrated game so many years later for the first time but so far so good. I mean it SHOULD be awesome because I really enjoyed a couple of its clones, Lost Odyssey and LotR: The Third Age
Lost odyssey and lotr the third age are clones of FFX? How so? I've played lost odyssey and ffx through to completion and I thought lost odyssey was amazing, ffx was good but not anywhere near as great as most people make it out to be to me. It was the first final fantasy to do away with the world map reducing the scale and size of a final fantasy adventure and as such I see this one as the beginning of the change in importance for future final fantasy's although most blame ff13 for this problem it all started with 10 in my opinion. I did however appreciate FFX more the second time I ran through it on the PS3.
@@tombrooke1281 they’re both mentioned as ffx clones in just about every single review I’ve ever watched on them lol
Definitely not clones, all they have in common is that they are traditional RPGs, lotr isn't even a jrpg. The reviews you've read are obviously by people who don't play or understand the genre at a guess. Mistwalker being the developer for lost odyssey could potentially call for an uneducated party to call it an FFX clone due to the main developer having worked as part of square enix, but if you yourself have played them, you would understand how different all three of those games are aside from them being RPGs. That idea is akin to Chris Tucker jokingly telling Asian people 'All y'all look alike' in Rush Hour when clearly they all have recognisably different features to distinguish that they are different people.
Lost odyssey was extremely underappreciated most likely because of its timing and platform, FFX is good but definitely over appreciated. FFX is like resident evil 4 of the resident evil series, over rated and made changes to the series that would be loathed by certain fans in future installments which I find strange when they revere the installment that made many of these changes initially, it's a strange old world .
@@tombrooke1281 do you want links to the videos orrr?
I can't believe Vanillaware games aren't known and loved enough.
Thanks for giving Tales of Legendia the love it deserves. Gets overlooked because of the limited battle system, but the story and music will always stay with me. Seriously, that soundtrack had NO RIGHT to go THAT HARD.
Legendia is very underrated
Wtf is Igor talking about jrpgs? And not doctor Frankenstein and the abomination they brought to life?
How you feel about FFX is kinda how I see FFVII
Good list but it is basically what you would expect.
What do you think about Atelier Iris? I really like those games, especially the second one but I never see any of these games on a "best ps2 jrpg list" ever 😞 The Azoth of Destiny is probably my personal favorite of all jrpgs on the ps2.
You might be the first person I've seen online actually talk about Radiata Stories. Loved that game when younger. Back when lots of games were getting remastered, or at least ported to the psn, it was one of the games I was hoping for the most. While not my favorite ps2 game, it was definitely an underrated game.
I like that your list are always unique. I decided to go back and play ps2 RPG's I missed and I'm planning on playing alot of games you recommend.
Also for erick this one, the fan translation of growlanser 6 is coming along nicely is really playable. I would love to see you react to that game. Growlanser 5 is one of my personal favorites as well and i am itching to play it again for my 3rd time.
“Persona 3: FES” w/ controllable characters mod is GREAT! (And there’s a remake coming!). And I love Erick Langdon because since way back he was the only person I knew of besides myself that liked “Eternal Poison” & “Suikoden V”! I promise I will finally try “Growlamser: Heritage of War”. I liked the Growlanser that came out on PSP, but it was hard as f@&k!
The one Ps2 RPG that i loved back in the day and nobody seems to rememeber is Okage Shadow King 😊
my top 3:
1- Valkirye Profile 2
2- Final Fantasy XII
3- Kingdown Hearts
antemporal games
Ayyy I remember Growlanser Heritage of War!
Back in the day, I remember thinking that it looked and played weird and didn't understand why my older brother liked it so much. Now I want to play it. The problem is that it's one of those games that emulators can't emulate well. The 3D models can look great, but the 2D portraits look awful and have black boxes on top of them. Gonna have to figure out how to play it properly.
Also, literally started Radiata Stories today! It's been about a decade since I last played it but damn I remember loving it. Looks absolutely amazing with an HD texture pack
Nothing wrong with it but it feels like this creator almost disregards a title once it becomes very popular.
So we have 20 of great PS2 RPG games. Thanks Erick
Yesss Valkyrie profile 2 as number one. Profile 2 was so beautiful loved the story. Best rpg on ps2
Oh man I really want a game to get sucked into on PCSX2 let's go!!!!!!!!
PCSX2 is amazing nowadays :)
Not sure about my whole top 10, but three games that probably would be on there that weren't in the video are Star Ocean 3, Ar Tonelico and Disgaea 2. Or maybe the Phantasy Star collection? lol
It's kind of a shame not to see disgaea 1 and 2 or ANY of its Nippon Ichi siblings on the consensus!
Disgaea 2 will always be my favorite but I'll always remember the first game's memorable story and brutal difficulty.
Phantom Brave is a game I absolutely treasure
I could not get into Odinsphere I tried but it’s so hard
Growlanser is such an underrated series ❤ also no one ever mentions shinning force neo
Tales of the Abyss will always holds my number 1 spot just because of how good the character developments are! Not to mention, Jade's sarcastic jokes and Anise's trolling carried the whole game further! xD
Great list here! Will try out some of the games that i actually never knew about before!
Really. You like it more than persona 4 golden or final fantasy 10? I’ve played take of abysss it’s mediocre imo. Symphonia and xillia much better. Also surprise star ocean till end of time wasn’t mentioned.
@@lucashuang10 Oh FFX is really good too! Definitely the best turn based battle system i've ever played. Always love how you can switch party members in and out mid battle! Also love it that you can control how Aeons fight rather than just cutscenes. Reason why Tales of the Abyss holds my number 1 spot is cause its my first jrpg on the ps2 and i really like the characters interaction with each other as well as the story 😁👍 .hack//GU is my favourite too! Sword Art Online definitely took ideas from it and gained so much fame xD
The GOAT of JRPG's youtuber
My Top 10 JRPGs on PS2:
1. GTA San Andreas
2. GTA Vice City
3. GTA 3
4. Call of Duty
5. Medal of Honor
6. Metal Gear Solid 3
7. Silent Hill
8. Resident Evil
9. Manhunt
10. Jak & Daxter
Erick cool video but you should talk about Growlanser II more
JRPG's aren't even my thing but I liked FFX. My favorite JRPG, maybe not because of the gameplay but I like it's world, the aesthetic and atmosphere.
Fuck yeah! Certain character interactions like Tidus's strained relationship with his dad had me crying like a little bitch, and years later I still haven't found a female protagonist I would fucking marry as fast as I would Yuna.
suikoden series and dragon quests were the best masterpiece, so sad suikoden don't have a sequel
Shadow Hearts: From the New World is my favourite PS2 rog
It always a damn hard decision to decide which Shadow Hearts is my favorite. I had a very long debate with myself because of it but after a few years i concluded that Shadow Hearts was the better one...............talking about SH1 here (and yes, my favorite PS2 game). SH2 is very VERY close to it but i ended up prefering SH1 because of the horror aspect of it, where SH2 just has small elements of it.
Legaia 2 would be a "guilty pleasure" (if you will) of mine. Suikoden 5 was my very first Suikoden game i've ever played and fell in love with it (and now i own and played every Suikoden game there is............outside of Tierkreis). Wild Arms was a wild ride, Star Ocean 3 still is the best of the series, FFX was when Square was still top dog, Growlanser HoW made me fall in love with the art of Urushihara Satoshi, too many to mention.
But its amazing how the PS2 still continues to be the absolute GOAT, not only when it comes to J-RPGs but as a whole......................i think the ultimate library has the PS1 tho. After the PS2, the remaining PS consoles had their hits but as a whole dont come nowhere near the PS1, PS2 and even PSP.
FFX Undub patch and FFXED save file editor to add the sigils to inventory to avoid ridiculous mini-games changes the experience entirely.
Have you ever tried Wizardry tale of the Forsaken land on the PS2 from Atlus?
Ah yes, Tales of Legendia. One of many PS2 RPG i intrigued because i want to play Tales of Destiny 2 but cannot read moon runes. The story is not that (purposely) convoluted but still fun. The design is more like Star Ocean rather than classic fantasy knight which is interesting. It doesn't have Free Run like Abyss, but it's still smooth.
The only thing that make me boring and reluctant is everywhere is water. You may call it snorefest
That's it
persona 3 holds up. it's unfortunate that the sub par pc port of the compromised psp version has been the only version available to most people for a while. hopefully the new remake is better, and manages to combine the positive aspects of the psp (controllable party & mc gender options) and ps2 fes (challenge, animated cut scenes, voiced characters, explorable town, playable story epilogue) versions.
could you do a video where you play armchair dev and talk about how you would redesign a certain game
Gotta love japan for not giving us gems like front mission 5 and berwick saga....would prolly make your list...
Also..tales of legendia!!! yesss i loved this one as well! one of the first tales i played that me actually go back and play the first ones...and buy em all ever since :D
Possibly...and this will shock pretty much everyone ever...my favorite RPG on the PS2 would be Ephemeral Fantasia. Oh it's the very worst graphically, and combat only consists of like 3 enemies, but it's the whole time element that's really done it for me. The fact you're literally trapped in this time-space bubble and must recruit characters who often die in the most unusual circumstances, or just characters you've met and bonded with. Shadow of Destiny worked in a similar way, except there you more or less prevent your own death. In Ephemeral Fantasia you are preventing the deaths of others, along with the rescue of the island from its own time bubble, and the princess of the island from her confines.
Chrono Trigger was one of my all time favorites when I had first beat it, because it had a lot to do with going back in time and saving the world, and bringing along friends from past, present, and future. Any game where time is a huge factor, I've always been for trying. I want a new RPG within that scope, because it's what I've always craved. Ephemeral Fantasia is also probably the very worst rated game on everyone's list when it comes to PS2 RPGs, and I actually agree with everyone. It's still my personal favorite, even though I acknowledge it to be possibly the worst on that console.
I have always wanted to give a chance to Ephemeral Fantasia. But i remember i always got cofused or lost. I am also pretty bad playing the guitar, banjo dude😅
@@jsr734 Yeah... There is little in the way of direction. I had to use a guide for it for some parts, such as recruiting the girl who fixes watches, or the little girl from the inn. One of the dungeons also needs a guide or you will spend hours getting lost in it, where all the hallways are the same.
Pattimo took some time, but it was a fun little mini game. Me and my friend at the time kept trying to get the highest score.
VP 2 does look better then FFX. Wish I played it back then.
I do agree with what you say about FF10. It's a good game, but it's not that good like what most people said. I beat it once and that's it. TBH, I only finished it just for the sake of being a JRPGs fan & couldn't ignore the fact that FF is one of the most influential JRPG series. IMO, 12 is a much better FF game than 10.
Hard disagree. I like 12 alot but X had way better characters and the best turn based battle system I’ve ever played. The music is some of the best as well
I'd rather play XII, but like the commenter above, I think the characters of X were better overall, even if some of XII's characters are better than many of X's (namely Balthier). Vaan and Penelo are just... forgotten.
Oh hell no, saying that FFX might be overrated is one thing but it's definitely superior to FFXII in virtually everything except the overarching story, especially gamplaywise(barring the Gambits FFXII pretty much just has a worse MMO battle system, while FFX has the best battle system of the series to be frank, which also provided the perfect template for how to do more dynamic turn-based systems).
@@gunchar06 That's why I said IMO. I understand some people prefer one game over another, but I just prefer FF12 over 10. The battle system, the story, the vibe, the wide variety of side missions. Almost everything about FF12 is far superior than 10 to me, EXCEPT the characters which IMO Tidus is a much better main character than Vaan. TBH, Ashe should've been the main character of FF12 instead of Vaan.
I won't even make a list, I just have to say it whenever I get the chance that Persona 3 IS better than 4. Characters are much interesting and developed, the story hooks you in from the beginning, and the way the evoker works is just metal as hell. Now as a fan of both is a moot point since it is like comparing gold 13 carat with gold 14 carat but still have to keep saying it.
Kinda sucks Valkyrie Profile 2 HATES being emulated. I'd honestly pay full price for an up-resed PC port but sadly that won't ever happen. I still have my old ass PS2 copy though so I'll figure something out lol.
Grandia 2 is fantastic.
Eternal poison is hard as hell no grinding exp no grinding money, i had lost 4 Times againts Ashley team ( white mage team ). I use thage as protagonist character
No se por que le tienen tanto hate a Final Fantasy, esta bien si no les gusta o si prefieren otros juegos, para gustos los colores como se dice por ahi, pero de eso a tenerle hate ya es como raro 😂😂
I'd put Persona 4 at number 1 easily. Nothing of that era even comes close, except Persona 3.
Do you live stream?
Ys Ark of napishtim
Tales of Legendia
Tales of Abyss
Legaia 2 duel sega
Grandia 3
Are the only games I enjoyed on the ps2. Surprised to learn legendia is considered the dark sheep. It's my favorite of the weries and I've played all of them.
My top ten no order are
FFX
FFXII
Persona 4
Shadow Hearts 2
Suikoden V
Suikoden III
Arc the Lad - Twilight of the Spirits
Growlanser V
Valkyrie Profile 2
Star Ocean III
As much of a fan i am for the. Hack universe i really had my problems with the gu trilogy. Mainly atoli va and that the side quests were too boring and repetive. The original. Hack games on the other hand even though they have aged much worse i love them to pieces. Everything they did for the extra immersion and the ambitiob they took. Plus the story was interesting and nice. While g. U can be summed up as. "we had something good in the prequel game, we lost it, lets try to bring it back. Chaos ensues."
Is there a way to play Valkyre Profile 2 without a ps2?
yep with emulator much better experience than play with a ps2, since you can upscale the game to higher resolution ,fast forward, quick save , etc. it my way to play old games.
The remake of the PS2 when?
Valkyrie Profile 2 is surely one of the best games all time. Or It could be, because It surely got one big mistake. The game is incredibly small. I think that's the big problem with VP2. But the combat system is surely the best, all time best. Música, story, characters... Everything in VP2 makes It a masterpiece. But the game is too short, that IS a big problem
Shadow Hearts Covenant or FFX for me. Nothing comes close to these series tbh
RADIATA STORY LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I like all this games equaly, cant put them in order,my top 5 favs are: ff x,ff12,dq 8,suikoden 5,sh covenant.Never liked persona games.
I am stuck in Suikoden 3 right now, and I can tell you that I am just tired of it. There are 6 story tracks, and they all replay SO MUCH per chapter, and there are like 4 chapters per story track. I dont believe I am going to make it through, even though I am on chapter 3 on all the tracks.... god it is monotony.
I don’t have FF12 in my top 10 but I cannot imagine in what way the .Hack games are better than FF12. Definitely not in the visuals or voice acting and that’s to be expected given the difference in budgets but the quests in .Hack aren’t better, the gameplay isn’t better, the story isn’t better
I always though Dark Cloud 2 was heavily overrated, at first it really look like a nice game, but deep into you realise how repetitive is it and how unfair the gameplay is sometimes. Also story seems good at first but it begins boring as soon has the first stage of the gameplay starts, Not even a good game in my opinion
I respect the list, but your take on FFX is horrendous lol
Need to know why I don't like people's opinions generally?
You said Persona 3 is better than Dark Cloud 2........ No...... Just no lol
Just got to saying Suikoden 5........ Being better than Dragon Quest 8.......God no! And I'm a big Suikoden fan. 5 was just slow
Its Tee-dus (Tidus) like in spanish xd.
I'd rather not pronounce it like that since it sounds way too much like "tedious" but that's just me.
@@cyclonecat2556 yeah, that name wasnt meant to be pronnounced with the english lenguage in mind. Sounds nice with other phonetics though.
@@gustavoadolfoperezsaenz7127 I think the reason a lot of people pronounce it as Ty-dus is because in the original FF10 you could change his name, as a result it was never said out loud until either X-2 or one of the Dissidia games, by which point most people had long since memorized it by how it looks to be pronounced in English in the first game. Even if Tee-dus is the canon way of pronouncing it you can't easily make a switch like that that's so engrained in peoples memories. Especially when for many 10 is a classic and a lot of those people never played the sequel or Dissidia games,
@@Goldenkitten1 well, i suppose you have a point. You could name It tiedus
This list is kinda confusing
I played growlanser and haven't touched persona series, i would say growlanser is okay unlike story telling of KH or FF 7 which are great during that time
Unlike also suikoden, and dragon quest stories
@eternalowl6579 late af but why tf did you Include dragon quest. The games series has all mediocre stories. Dq11 story was a mess. Dq3,4,5,8 are the "best" story wise in the series
❤🙏👌👍
The problem with .hack GU is that the combat is hot garbage. A repetitive button masher with no challenge. Which is a shame because the story was decent.
Most hacknslash action games are mindless button masher tbh
You rarely get one with a very deep gameplay
@@DOGEELLL Yes, but .hack GU has the added issue of being a full length JRPG with a story and a very repetitive gameplay loop with a lot of backtracking. The game needs some difficulty and depth if you're going to be playing it for 60 hours.
Damn am I the only one who put persona 3 (FES) above persona 4 and FFXII above FFX..
Dark Cloud 1/2 BOTH should be in the top 10. There are NO games even today that can compare to them. They might have a few of the things those had but not close. If it wasnt for Sony being a complete douche we would have seen a dark cloud 3 already. Hell by now they would have made a 4 and 5 as well. Kingdom Hearts 2 should be named Cutscene galore, Oh you fight 1 monster, cutscene, or you fought another cutscene. you saw a cutscene , cutscene about it. after playing for an hour I played like 5 minutes of actual game. BORING AF. doesnt even make the top 100 imo.
Modern sony just make movies simulators like god of bore and horizon zero dawn
I hate 10 bc of the mx
Final Fantasy X is overrated. I loved it back then but it doesn’t entirely hold up well. XII is and was better. Tidus sucks.
XII have terrible gameplay how is it better than X
😂 I hate FFX
And X-2?
@@jsr734 not played it.
Final Fantasy XIII is way better than Final Fantasy X. I think XIII gets too much hate and X gets a free pass.
Ffxiii is not even from ps2
@@davidtoowavy1648 Never said it was.
Completely agree
I think they took a lot of ideas from X and X-2 to XIII. At least that is my impression.
The moment you put .hack ahead of ff12 was the moment you lost me. i am aware its your opinion, that and the fact the amount of adverts you have, 1 minute 48 seconds then your first advert.... bye
Strategy games suck...
Suikoden is the best from 1 to 5
